Continuity mistake: In the briefing room, after Mudd is forced to give his real name, the screen lights up with his record of offenses. In the picture, his image has the ear bauble on the right ear, but he wears it on the left.

Visible crew/equipment: In Kirk's quarters, as the camera goes to a close up on the "evil" Kirk, watch the reflective strip behind him. The movements of the camera are reflected and noticeable.

Trivia: This was the second pilot for the series, the first pilot being done with Jeffrey Hunter as Capt. Christopher Pike. This is also the first episode that has William Shatner as the famous Capt. James T. Kirk. The episode was made at the request of Lucille Ball, part owner of Desilu Studios, and friend to Gene Roddenberry, because she believed in the franchise.

Continuity mistake: As Shane is driving to escape the Black Ops cars, he drives through a chain link fence with a private property sign on it. A second later, he hits it again.

Continuity mistake: As Q approaches Picard and Riker's position while playing a trumpet, both of Q's hands are on the horn. A second later, his left hand is down by his side. Then, after he makes cigars appear in Picard and Riker's mouths, his left hand is extended as he says the first part of his lines. A second later, both hands are on his horn.

Continuity mistake: In the Shuttle, Q's hair is arranged in bangs on his forehead. A split second later in Ten Forward, his hair is up and back from his forehead in the familiar style.
Suggested correction: Q's powers has shown in the past that he can change his looks in an instance, as well as his location and anyone else he chooses. This is precisely what happens here.

Other mistake: After Riker turns off Data, Data slumps forward. After being in that position, and after the cut scene, Data's head twitches slightly.

Continuity mistake: As Worf goes to enter the portal to the Enterprise carrying Data, his right hand is free, and his left is holding Data's left hand. Appearing on the bridge, Worf's left hand is on Data's leg, his right hand on Data's wrist.
