Continuity mistake: In the cabin, the survivor and Howe hear an explosion, and the survivor goes out to investigate. He pulls up a board and unlocks the door, and only closes it after him. When the girl comes up from the basement, the door is closed, locked, and barricaded.

Revealing mistake: As Kirk turns to run on the castle steps, an iron bar barricade appears, blocking his path. When it does, watch the castle wall, and the barricade. It seems to slide just a few inches to line up correctly in the shot, showing poor editing.

Continuity mistake: After swiping at Trelane to score a hit, which Trelane avoids easily, Kirk throws the sword away, which hits a bush as it falls. When Trelane calls up another sword, the bush suddenly stops moving.

Revealing mistake: As Trelane takes a swipe at Kirk, he hits a tree branch. As it breaks away, the building material it was made from is revealed, rather than it being wood.

Trivia: Interestingly, Trelane put Kirk on trial in his courtroom. In Star Trek: The Next Generation S1 : Ep1 "Encounter at Farpoint", Q played judge in an apocalyptic courtroom, putting Picard and the human race on trial.

Trivia: Even though it is revealed that Trelane uses a machine to augment his powers, in the Star Trek: The Next Generation novel "Q Squared" it is revealed that Trelane and his parents are members of the Q Continuum. It is also revealed the the power that Gary Mitchell and Elizabeth Dehner gained in S1 :Ep3, "Where No Man Has Gone Before" was Q himself trying to get back into this universe but was suspended in the area outside the galaxy in an energy form.

Chosen answer: This was an early episode and TV shows often make small changes to set design, props, equipment, and so on as the program progresses. Most likely it was felt that this particular prop was not effective and the producers decided to eliminate it.
