Doctor Who (2005)

Answer: The Time Lords gave the Doctor a new regeneration cycle before the last crack in the universe was closed, in "The Time of the Doctor". (They've been shown to have the ability to do so before, as in "The Five Doctors," The Master was offered a new regeneration cycle if he rescued the Doctors).

Ghostbusters 2 (1989)

Question: When the Ghostbusters went on trial, did they CHOOSE to waive their right to trial by jury and be tried by the judge? Given the obvious bias of this judge against them, if I were them, I would certainly not have waived my right to a jury trial.

Answer: Violating a restraining order is regarded as Contempt of Court, and thus is not subject to trial by jury.

Captain Defenestrator

But what about the other charges, willful destruction of public property, fraud, and malicious mischief? (Also, it should be noted that no-one goes to trial a day or two after they're arrested, so it seemed it was written as a bench trial just so the judge could later reverse his decision).

Bishop73

Louis is a tax attorney and since he got his degree in night school, it's implied that he has very little experience even being a tax attorney, let alone a criminal defense lawyer. I took it as the underlying humor in this scene being that everything went wrong, yet they still managed to save the day.

The charge that the prosecution really wants to stick them on is Ghostbusting and therefore, violating a restraining order. So that's what they're pushing for.

Question: After touring the cinema, why does Goebbels become so angry when someone mentions Lillian Harvey. Who is she?

Answer: Lilian Harvey was a British-born actress who made her career in Germany. While under Nazi scrutiny for having too many friends in the Jewish community, she'd helped a Jewish friend escape the country before escaping herself and performing for Allied troops. So yeah, Goebbels hated her. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilian_Harvey)

General questions

I'm trying to remember the name of an 80's movie where the guy is at a stop light, and a car with two Asian guys in suits pulls up beside him. The driver doesn't say anything but the passenger has a microphone and is announcing via a set of speakers on the roof.

troyfacto

Chosen answer: "Better Off Dead," starring John Cusack and David Ogden Stiers. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088794/)

Captain Defenestrator

Question: Does Emmanuelle Mimieux know of the Bastard's plan to blow up the cinema and do the Bastards know that Emmanuelle Mimieux is going to burn it down, or are the plans not connected at all?

Answer: They're unconnected. As happens often in Tarantino's films, their storylines are completely separate until they intersect at that point.

Question: In the bank, inside the lift, when John McClane is with the fake Detective Otto, what does he see in Detective Otto's badge that convinces him he is fake?

rorschach2992

Chosen answer: He sees the reflection of his friend's badge number that he remembered from their conversation about the lottery earlier, so knows the badge was taken from his dead friend.

Show generally

Question: Can the vampires in BtVS have their picture taken? I know in some other stories they can be. We know they don't show up in mirrors but I'm not sure if cameras were ever directly addressed.

crazymars2u

Chosen answer: It was addressed on Angel, and they can be photographed, just not well.

The Great Escape (1963)

Question: When Roger is explaining the escape plan, he says that Tom will run under the vorlager, the cooler, and the wire. The cooler and the wire are obvious, but what's the vorlager?

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: Vorlage is German for "forward position," so this likely refers to either the main gate, or a machine gun nest.

Question: Was there any point to Zam Wesell being a changeling? She reveals herself to be one to Anakin when he is on top of her speeder and when she is hiding from the two Jedi in the bar, she makes absolutely no effort to disguise herself.

S. Ha

Chosen answer: Being a changeling would make her job as an assassin easier, however, Anakin and Obi-Wan were in hot pursuit and she had no time to remove her armor, which presumably would not also change with her, so there would be no point in changing her appearance, as they'd recognize her armor.

The Simpsons (1989)

Krusty Gets Busted - S1-E12

Question: Why does Sideshow Bob not want to pursue Lisa since, if it hadn't been for her pointing out to Bart all the major flaws in the CCTV footage that would show that it couldn't have been Krusty (in Krusty Gets Busted), he wouldn't have been found out by Bart and Lisa? He knows Lisa is smarter than Bart, so surely he would have realised that Lisa was the brains behind the detective work that got him caught.

Answer: Lisa often gets taken in with the others that Bob has reformed each time. Bart, on the other hand, always suspects him of evil right away. (And is generally right, making him good arch-foe material.)

The Simpsons (1989)

Chosen answer: Uncle Al probably likes his nephew a lot. Wendy's hamburgers were named after the owner's daughter, so why not name a bowling alley after your nephew?

Captain Defenestrator

Chosen answer: Matt Groening thought very highly of Phil Hartman, (Philip J. Fry on Futurama was named after him as well) and had retired all of Hartman's characters upon his death. He probably thought that bringing them back for the movie just so audience members could have an "A-ha!" moment would have tarnished the memorial.

Despicable Me (2010)

Chosen answer: "You have the face of a donkey."

Captain Defenestrator

Answer: "You have a face like a donkey."

Answer: What he says is "You look like an ass."

Question: In the scene where Malone is shot by Nitti, he crawls to a room and when Ness comes in he finally gets Ness to see the paper about the man coming into the train station. If that information was so vital why was he just roaming around his apartment instead of going to Ness to show him?

Answer: Ness was coming to Malone's apartment to discuss the information with him there, Nitti and his men just got there first.

Superman (1978)

Answer: That's the updated comic book version. In the movie and the original origin story their red sun was going super nova and caused Krypton's orbit to shift.

Jor-El's conversation with the Science Council in the movie is all about the planet's core.

Captain Defenestrator

You must be thinking of a different movie. There wasn't any mention of the core and when Jor-El says the planet will explode, the reply is the planet is just shifting orbit. Later, Jor-El tells 18 year old Clark they will enter the realm of the red Krypton sun, the cause of their destruction. The answer about Krypton's sun is correct.

Bishop73

I went and looked up the script and it DOES say orbit. OK, you're right.

Captain Defenestrator

Chosen answer: An atomic chain-reaction in the planet's core. The explosion also irradiated the fragments of the planet, which is why kryptonite is deadly to Superman.

Torchwood (2006)

Answer: He might have requisitioned or stolen it from Torchwood London, or he might have been ready down below once it'd been severed, searching for "the right Doctor" and not knowing that the newly-regenerated Doctor was the one he was looking for.

General questions

I'm looking for the name of a movie (it probably came out in the early to mid 90s) about two kids that steal a car and go on a joyride. If I remember correctly, they were young, like 8-10. I could have sworn that the title was two names like Sam & Mike, or something like that. I've just about given up hope of finding the name of this movie. Thanks for your time.

Answer: There's a film called "Josh and S.A.M." (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107277/) that could be the one. Another film with a similar premise called "Big Shots" came out six years prior. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092655/)
