The Big Lebowski (1998)

Corrected entry: Walter is twenty minutes late for a league game against Smokey's team. Before he ever gets up to roll, he has pulled a gun on Smokey and The Dude states that they're calling the cops. In the next scene, Walter and The Dude get into his car as the LAPD arrives. How fast did Walter bowl ten frames? How slow is the LAPD?

Correction: This is obviously a stab at the LAPD's infamously slow reaction time.

Down Periscope (1996)

Corrected entry: When Capt. Dodge enters the Vice Admiral's office at the beginning of the movie, he salutes. Navy sailors do not salute indoors or uncovered.

Correction: When first reporting to a duty station or when summoned to a superior's office, a salute indoors is appropriate.

Grumpy Scot

Correction: No one in the Navy salutes without a cover on. It is never done, no matter what you are doing.

The 6th Day (2000)

Corrected entry: A problem with the clones is a genetic defect inserted in their DNA. But the cloned Adam seems to be clear of any disease presently and in the future. He plans to start a company in a different place at the end. Shouldn't he be worried about contracting cystic fibrosis or some other fatal genetic disease?

Correction: Adam was mistakenly cloned to cover his partner's murder. If he suddenly developed a disease after passing every previous genetic scan, it would attract exactly the kind of attention the bad guys are trying to avoid.

Star Wars (1977)

Correction: Considering the number of storm troopers in the empire, they would not customize each set of armor. I imagine the black areas between the white armor segments are flexible and can stretch/shrink making the armor, one-size-fits-all.

Grumpy Scot

All the stormtroopers are clones of the same person, Jango Fett, meaning they are all the same size.

Not by this point - the Empire had been phasing out clones since the end of the Clone Wars and replacing them with recruits. The clones aged too quickly to stay in service, and conscription, etc. was simpler and cheaper.

Short Circuit (1986)

Corrected entry: When Number 5 escapes and Howard and Scroter are talking, Scrooter specifically mentions that his wife is cooking a steak for him and it will be ruined when he gets home because he has to stay and sort out the Number 5 situation. A few moments later, Newton walks in, and soon after doing a few things on computer, he comments, "Don't worry Scroter, you won't miss your meal...". Newton was not in the room at the time Scroter complained about missing his meal, so how could Newton say this?

Correction: Probably the "I'm going to miss my steak/dinner" is his complaint every time he has to stay late. Newton is expecting him to say it and teasing him.

Corrected entry: How come droids (with computer brains) CAN'T HIT ANYTHING?!?! Stormtrooper syndrome, methinks.

Correction: When you can field an army of tens of thousands of robots and it's no big deal, accuracy isn't a problem - there's no point putting effort into pinpoint targeting when another 5 dirt cheap droids will ensure you get the job done. When precision is needed, they use the Droidekas.

Grumpy Scot

Correction: The guns are probably pretty cheap too. The droids are only as accurate as their guns.

Predator (1987)

Corrected entry: Arnie takes a 40mm M203 grenade, removes the projectile and ties it to an arrow to fire at the predator. This would not work. The M203 is a rifled launcher (the barrel has grooves to make the grenade spin for greater stability). In order to prevent accidental detonation, the shell has an internal safety pin that relies on the centrifugal force generated by the spin to deactivate it.

Correction: An earlier scene shows him using his knife to open the grenade. He removed the gunpowder propellant and used it to improvise the explosive arrow.

Grumpy Scot

Correction: In researching the mechanism of said grenade, it is clear that within the munition is means to cause detonation. Removing only the gun powder and placing it in a makeshift arrowhead would not create an explosive weapon.

Species II (1998)

Corrected entry: If the female alien (Natasha Henstridge) is supposed to be secluded from men then why does she have a television that show shows with men? In the chase scene the female scientist says that her favourite show is "Dukes of Hazzard"... MEN.

Correction: Eve can't have men in close proximity. Male pheremones are what trigger her mating instincts (which is what makes her so dangerous). Watching men on tv won't do anything.

The Matrix (1999)

Corrected entry: Morpheus tells Neo that they don't release people after a certain age, but he did it because Neo is the one. However, later we find out that Cypher has been out of the Matrix for 9 years. This is hard to understand because Cypher is at least 10 years older than Neo. Why then did they release Cypher, if he also was past the certain age?

Correction: The "certain age" rule could have been put in place only in the past 2 years or so.

Corrected entry: In Star Trek TNG's 4th or 5th season, they bring Scotty back for an episode under the pretence that he put himself into a continuous feedback loop in the transporter in order to survive a crash. The episode was called 'relics'. When Geordi, Worf, and Ryker beam down, the free him from the transporter. As soon as Riker says that he is from the starship Enterprise, Scotty immediately says 'the Enterprise. I'll bet old Jim Kirk himself dragged her out of mothballs to come looking for me'. But wait. In Star Trek Generations (the movie), Scotty was on the Enterprise B when (he believed) Jim was pulled out of the ship when the Nexus (which no-one understood, at the time) collided with the ship. So, as far as Scotty is aware, Jim is dead. So why the statement in Relics about Jim being around to come looking for Scotty?

Correction: When they free Scotty from the transporter loop, Geordi says something like it has suffered less than 1% degradation. Obviously, the memory of Kirk's death was in that 1%.

Corrected entry: During the scene in which Bill and Admiral Cartwright discuss Operation Retrieve with the Federation President, the person who briefs the president on Operation Retrieve is called Colonel West. But when you look at West's uniform closely, it can be seen that he carries the rank of Admiral. And according to many Star Trek sites, the rank of Colonel doesn't even exist in Starfleet's ranking system.

Correction: Gene Roddenberry suggested that there are Starfleet Marines. We even see them in DS9. Colonel West could be one. Doesn't explain the Starfleet Naval uniform unless he was undercover for some weird reason.

Stargate (1994)

Corrected entry: Surely after spending millions trying to decipher and work out the final symbol wouldn't they go for the obvious trial and error of seeing if the other symbols worked?

Correction: The series Stargate SG-1 explains this mistake. The planets are moving farther away from each other due to galactic drift. They had to alter the dialing computer to get anywhere. It was pure luck that they connected to Abydos even after finding the last symbol.

Corrected entry: When Spock administers the Vulcan Neck-Pinch to McCoy in Engineering (just before he enters the radiation-contaminated area), McCoy grimaces, then sinks to the floor. When Spock is delivering his lines of, "I'm sorry doctor, I have no time to discuss this logically" McCoy's eyes flicker open, and he actually looks toward Spock's approaching hand when he is about to mind-meld with him.

Correction: McCoy could be partially conscious, but unable to move his body from the effects of the nerve-pinch.

Corrected entry: After Khan starts the Genesis device, things look hopeless because the Enterprise doesn't have warp capability repaired yet. They are unable to beam over and stop the device. Spock saves the day by sacrificing his life to get the warp drive repaired. Why doesn't the crew of the Enterprise destroy the Reliant (with the Genesis device) with a photon torpedo instead of trying to escape?

Correction: A torpedo might have detonated the Genesis device. Would you try to disarm an activated nuke by blasting it with a shotgun?

Grumpy Scot

Corrected entry: They arrive on the island, and 10 years later we can see them washing themselves with what is clearly soap.

Correction: Back then a lady might very well have known how to make soap with animal fat, ashes or some plant ingredients. Store bought soap was often an expensive luxury. She simply taught the children how to make it.

U-571 (2000)

Corrected entry: Non-whites were not allowed in the "Submarine Navy" until the next decade.

Correction: Black men were allowed on submarines as cooks or stewards in WWII. In a sub everyone has to know two or three jobs. Often this was the only way for a black man to learn technical jobs like sonar or navigator.

U-571 (2000)

Corrected entry: The sailors - rightly so - become very frightened when the long range plane spots them. However no sub captain in his right mind would stay on the surface if he heard the sound of an aircraft - it was one of the lookout's primary tasks: alert the captain if they heard propellers, and prepare to dive.

Correction: U-571 was badly damaged. She might not be able to submerge quickly or for long periods, no matter what the lookout saw or heard.

Grumpy Scot

Corrected entry: James Bond swims onto the stolen Russian submarine, climbs in, and draws his weapon on a sailor. Weapons expert 007 should know the famous Colt 1911 .45 is single action, and won't work for squat if it isn't cocked...

Correction: There are more than 50 versions of the Colt M1911 frame liscensed or copied in the world. Some of them are double action.

U-571 (2000)

Corrected entry: When the US commandos are about to board U-571, we see a cocked MP-40 gun hanging from an officer's neck, which is hidden in his jacket. You don't just let those guns hang like that, or it'll fire off at the slightest shock. Not a very smart thing to do in a stormy sea.

Correction: The MP38 (which is identical to the MP40) had that defect. It was corrected in the MP40.

Grumpy Scot

Corrected entry: After Bond grabs the pistol (a Colt .45ACP with a 7+1 capacity) from Electra even though 2 rounds were expended to shoot Valentine Bond still has 6 rounds to kill Electra's guards and at least 1 remaining otherwise the slide would have locked open. Then he dives into the water so where did he get exra ammunition from to kill Renard's men? (01:44:09)

Correction: A .38 super in a Colt frame holds 10 rounds. A 9mm in a Colt frame holds 13 rounds. Could be either one.
