Scared Very Straight - S4-E20

Question: David was fired by the station manager Howard for his continued meth problem and mishaps on the radio, yet Howard was originally the person who gave David the meth and even did it with him sometimes. When David was fired, he just got ticked off and told Howard that the radio station sucked and walked out. Question - of all people, couldn't Howard have at the least been fired as well? And why would David let that opportunity slide?

Answer: I think it's a case of "he said/he said". Howard is the station manager, so his word would hold more weight than David's. If Howard was accused of being David's meth source, Howard could deny it; the school would be much more likely to believe him than David.

Question: Why were the sprites so desperate to protect the book?

Brad

Chosen answer: If I remember correctly, it's because the book contains information on how to destroy them. Had the book fallen into Mulgarath's hands, he would have been able to eliminate them and rule over the rest of the faeries.

Yes! you are right.

Question: In some theaters, the film is shown in 3-D. When the film is released on home video, will it also be in 3-D?

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: Yep. The DVD comes in 3-D and 2-D versions. The 3-D versions come with (if I remember correctly) four pairs of 3-D glasses.

Elf (2003)

Question: I am confused. Buddy has blood drawn in order to do a DNA sample and they get the results almost right away. Doesn't it take weeks for DNA samples to come back? If so, how can they get the results so quickly in the movie?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: More than likely, it was done for storyline reasons. Since the results of DNA tests *do* take a while to come back, it slows the plot down to show them waiting. I guess, in a way, this situation calls for a suspension of disbelief; it may seem like it took no time at all, but in order to enjoy the film, you have to just accept that the necessary waiting period has passed.

There's an old story where someone asked a major sci-fi producer how fast one of his space vehicles could go. He answered, "At the speed of the plot."

Answer: It was most likely a blood typing test (it can take minutes and its done through a finger-stick test). If the doctor's office had the test cards. If both parents have type A blood, their child can't have type B and vice versa with type B and A. Type O is rare enough that its more likely that Walter and Buddy's mother were either type A, B, or AB. -college student who has rewatched the movie and had to go through several allele genotype/phenotype lectures.

Actually, type O is the most common type. O - is more rare than O+, which is true for every blood type, but O is still the most common for most ethnic groups.

Answer: Most private labs can return DNA testing results in 1-2 days because the test isn't that complicated, even in the early 2000's. It's usually court ordered testing that take weeks to process because of all the bureaucratic red tape, paper work, and signatures required. Some labs do get extremely busy and therefore it might take up to 2-4 weeks to get results back, but that also usually includes more extensive DNA testing.

Bishop73

Answer: Even so the test came back almost immediatly.

lartaker1975

Yes, but again, for the sake of moving the plot along, Walter needs to know that Buddy is his son. The movie could not drag along while they were sitting around waiting for DNA results.

wizard_of_gore

Blood typing is immediate. Can you believe we used to do it in 5th grade science.

Elf (2003)

Question: Is Buddy left handed or right handed? I'm just asking this because during the movie he acts left handed and then he acts right handed.

Answer: I can think of two possibilities: (1) he suffers from cross-dominance, where he uses one hand for certain tasks and the oppostie hand for others, or (2) he's ambidextrous (which is a rare variant of cross-dominance), which means he can perform tasks using either hand with equal adeptness.

Cubs Fan

I have cross-dominance. Never knew what it was called, thanks.

Answer: Maybe they reverse the image occasionally to make the scene 'work' better. Or to make Buddy appear ambidextrous?

Question: One thing I never got is why Marty is so shocked that the Cubs won the World Series in 2015. He was then going to say something like "It's just that Miami..." but stops and asks another question. Was it ever said anywhere what he was going to say about Miami? That always perplexed me.

Carl Missouri

Chosen answer: The Cubs aren't exactly known as World Series contenders. Put it down to bad luck, but over 100 years, they only have one World Series championship. The last time they won the Series was in 1908, and the last time they were even IN the Series was in 1945. Being a Cubs fan myself, Marty's reaction isn't that much of a stretch. The Miami reference is because they didn't have a baseball team in 1985, which is all Marty knows of course. Since the movie was made, however, Miami has acquired an MLB team called the Miami Marlins (formerly the Florida Marlins).

The Mummy Returns (2001)

Question: Is the Scorpion King from this movie the same character from the movie called 'The Scorpion King', being played by the same actor and both being good fighters?

Answer: Yes, it's the same character and the same actor. That film takes place about 5,000 years before this one.

General questions

I'm not sure if there is an answer to this, but does anyone know why the ages of high school/middle school kids in some books and movies are a year behind what they are in real life? For example, a lot of high school seniors are portrayed as being seventeen around prom or graduation time (the end of the year), but in real life, most students start out the school year as seventeen-year-olds and their next birthday is their eighteenth one.

Answer: The simplest answer I can think of is that their 18th birthday falls after the date of prom/graduation. Sometimes for the sake of the narrative having them be under 18 makes sense.

Question: Why was Alejandro referred to as "de la Vega"? This was Elena's surname and it would seem unlikely that Alejandro would have taken his wife's name rather than her taking his.

Lauren Capper

Chosen answer: If I remember correctly, he took the name from Diego de la Vega in the first film, when Diego passed the Zorro identity on to him.

Question: When Obi-wan says that Anakin saved him for the ninth time instead of the tenth, because the business on some planet doesn't count, what is he referring to?

Answer: He is referring to an incident on Cato Nemoidia, the home planet of the Nemoidians. It's not shown in the film, but, if I remember correctly, it is told in the novel Labyrinth of Evil.

Question: Why don't the Pevensies put their shoes back on before climbing up to explore the ruins?

Answer: I'm sure they do. But to advance the storyline in the time they have, it's time consuming for the filmmakers to show that. We just have to suspend our disbelief and assume.

General questions

I remember a movie that had a cameo appearance by three brothers of celebrities. One was Frank Stallone, brother of Sylvester. One was Don Swayze, brother of Patrick. Does anyone remember this movie and who the third brother was?

Paul Pepiton

Chosen answer: According to the IMDB, the only film those two have appeared in together was "W.A.R: Women Against Rape" from 1987. And if I'm correct, the third brother was Dick Van Dyke's brother Jerry. Alternatively might you be thinking of the recent "Fred Claus", which featured a group for overlooked brothers of celebrities, including cameos from Frank Stallone, Roger Clinton (brother of Bill) and Stephen Baldwin?

Star Wars (1977)

Question: Here is something that I've always thought was a little strange. When Obi-Wan takes Luke to Mos Eisley, why does he tell Luke everything about the place? If Luke has grown up on Tatooine, it seems like he would know something about it or would have been in a cantina before.

Answer: Luke has never been to Mos Eisely before. Because of the way he was raised by his uncle Owen, Luke had only been as far as Anchorhead, a neighboring community.

General questions

This is a game show that used to be on Nickelodeon. It had a jungle theme, and the players had to go through an obstacle course. In at least one episode, there was a part where they had to get gold pieces of a statue (I think it was of a monkey) and put it together before time was up. Does anyone remember the name?

Answer: It was called "Legends of the Hidden Temple" and ran from 1993-95. And you were close: the monkey was silver, not gold.

Goldeneye (1995)

Question: How did Alec survive being shot at the start only to return later in the film. It's something that I can't figure out, as James saw him get shot.

Ssiscool

Chosen answer: The real answer, which I believe was explained better in the game or in special features. Regardless, I did hear, is that Ourumov wasn't aiming directly at Alec's head, but to the side and shot the ground behind him. But made it look like he shot him in the head. Alec would have felt the bullet whiz by him.

Quantom X

That makes more sense.

Ssiscool

It has been a while since I watched the movie, and my copy is a VHS... but I believe if you watch very closely you can actually see the bullet hit the ground behind him with a tile breaking. I don't remember for sure if you can, but I seem to remember they did add that little effect.

Quantom X

Answer: But what about the Russian soldier who was nervous and fired at the gas tanks, only to be shot by Ourumov? Did he fake his death too?

That's a valid point. Ourumov never reloaded.

Ssiscool

Answer: He was shot with a blank cartridge. What that means is that the casing in the gun chamber didn't contain a live bullet; instead of killing him, the gun simply gave off a realistic flash that tricked Bond into thinking Alec had been shot. As explained later in the film, Alec's death was staged between himself and Ourumov.

Cubs Fan

Wouldn't James know it was a blank round? Lack of blood for example?

Ssiscool

Ourumov shot Alec and the Russian soldier with the same gun but, only the soldier was actually killed.

But that doesn't work, because even blanks can be deadly at close range.

MrMovieBuff

Chosen answer: Joyce invited him in offscreen. In a subsequent scene, Joyce mentions to Willow and Tara that she wouldn't normally invite a strange man into the house.
