Continuity mistake: Aboard the Interceptor, after Elizabeth lifts the hatch and comes up on deck, Anamaria says, "The Black Pearl. She's gaining on us." In the very next shot of Elizabeth, behind her on deck is the crewman with the tan hat. In the next shot as she looks out towards the Pearl, up at the top of the rigging are two crewmen, one of them is the same crewman that was just on deck in the previous shot. He's the one who stands on Cotton's left in Tortuga when Jack inspects the "able-bodied crew." (01:21:25)
Continuity mistake: When Elizabeth asks, "Well, then can't we lose them amongst those shoals?" in the front shot, her hair is in front of her shoulders and in the side shot, her hair is behind her shoulder, on her back. This occurs many times throughout the film with Elizabeth's loose, long hair - wet and dry, such as on the dock, after Jack rescues her in Port Royal, and after Will rescues her when they board the Interceptor. (01:21:40)
Continuity mistake: When the barrels are being tossed off the Interceptor there is a shot of a crewman in an orange jacket holding a cannonball in his hands and passing it to someone on his left. As the shot pans to the side, behind that crewman that passed the cannonball, we see part of the head of someone and also see Will's shoulder and arm - he just climbed out from below deck. Yet in the very next shot, Will is just coming up from below deck. (Perhaps better in slow motion.) (01:22:40)
Continuity mistake: In the overhead wide shot of the Pearl pursuing the Interceptor they are maybe three boat lengths apart. Before and after they are further apart. In general during that entire pursuit sequence their distances change too rapidly, from nearer to farther away (as seen from either ship towards the other), but that shot shows a particular discrepancy. (01:22:45)
Continuity mistake: Anamaria's hat is turned, so the flap is on the side of her face when she says, "It was a good plan. Up till now." In the shots before and after, the flap of her hat is in the front. (01:23:00)
Continuity mistake: When Mr. Gibbs yells, "Load the guns! Case shot and langrage!" Will is behind him in this shot and Will's body is facing towards Anamaria, yet in Will's close-up, his body is facing towards Mr. Gibbs, and just then turns a bit, to face Anamaria and Elizabeth. (01:23:25)
Continuity mistake: As Elizabeth says, "Lower the anchor on the right side," Mr. Gibbs' right white collar is under the leather strap buckled correctly and Will's neck scarf is crooked. In the next shot, when Elizabeth says, "On the starboard side," Mr. Gibbs' leather strap is not buckled properly, his right white collar is over the strap and Will's neck scarf is straight. When Mr. Gibbs says, "Daft like Jack," his white collar is under the strap again and one end of Mr. Gibbs' neck string is much longer than the other end. Also, Will's right white shirt collar is over his vest. Yet when Mr. Gibbs says, "Do it, you gobs..." the ends of Mr. Gibbs' neck string are even and Will's right white collar is under his vest. (01:24:00)
Continuity mistake: When Mr Gibbs shouts what sounds like, "Do it you gobs, or it's you we'll load into the cannons!" while the Region 2 DVD subtitles read "Do it you gobs!" which matches his mouth movements, the Region 1 subtitles say "do it you dogs..." yet his lips clearly form a B not a G. A bizarre difference between versions. (01:24:10)
Continuity mistake: After her anchor is lowered, there's a front shot of Interceptor as it splashes wildly and a crewman that is dressed as Will is seen up on the port side of the rigging. After Elizabeth shouts, "Let go!" the crewman dressed as Will is up on the rigging, but now he's on the starboard side of the rigging. This is not a flipped shot, the sails are different in both shots too. (01:24:25)
Continuity mistake: Being chased by the Pearl, the Interceptor lowers the anchor and it catches a rock. After a few shots on deck the next shot below deck, is of the table with the medallion on it. As the table starts to tip we see the medallion and chain. In the next close-up shot, the chain is lying on the table differently. The chain didn't start to slide between shots, only after the second shot. (01:24:25)
Continuity mistake: When the Interceptor drops its anchor on the right side to surprise the Black Pearl, Barbossa turns to the crew and yells, "Hard to port. Rack the starboard oars." When he says this line, his teeth are either normal, or not nearly as gross as they are in the rest of the movie. [Fixed on Blu-Ray]. (01:24:40)
Continuity mistake: When the Black Pearl and the Interceptor fire their cannons, a fork's prongs dig into the iris of Ragetti's wooden eye. Pintel then removes the fork with the wooden eye, but the fork's prongs are now lodged just beside the iris of the eye - not to be confused with swirls in that eye; and his grip of the fork differs between shots. (01:25:30)
Continuity mistake: In the brig aboard the Pearl, Jack sees Gibbs' flask in the pooled water around him. He reaches for it, holds it upside down to his mouth to drink from. There are two successive shots of him holding it to his mouth and then moving it away. The left sleeve leaning on his knee and the position of the long striped cloth that he wears around his waist differs in both shots. Also, the item on the floor to his left is in a different position in both shots. (01:25:55)
Continuity mistake: Aboard the Black Pearl, Pintel and Ragetti load the cannon with the chain-link cannonballs. As the cannon fires, in this shot from outside the port hole, the rungs of the steps on the side of the ship are to the right of the port hole. This shot has been flipped. The rungs are really to the left of the port hole, as seen when they load the cannonballs into the cannon and other shots throughout the movie. (01:26:55)
Continuity mistake: Jack escapes the brig of the Black Pearl, goes up on deck and grabs the line from another and says, "Thanks very much." This shot's flipped. In the next wide shot of Jack (Tony Angelotti), he grabs the line again and swings across. The flipping was done in order to keep the Interceptor on the left of the screen and the Black Pearl on the right of the screen during the fight sequence. (01:28:15)
Continuity mistake: Jack asks, "Where's dear William?" and Elizabeth runs over to the hatch that Will is trapped under. Tied to the hatch is a rope attached between two holes and lying on top is a piece of the broken mast and sail with more rope. In the wide shot of Elizabeth running towards the hatch and the following close-up, the ropes and twisted sail are either lying or tied differently on the hatch in both shots. This has nothing to do with the angle of the shot. (01:29:15)
Continuity mistake: After the downing of the square rigged mast aboard the Interceptor, Jack spots the monkey running across it to the Black Pearl and he starts to follow. As Jack runs toward the mast in this shot, we see the broken end of the mast, rigging and sail that is lying at the Interceptor's rail. In the next shot, on Elizabeth's right the broken mast is seen with its rigging on it. The rigging is lying very differently on the mast in this shot than in the previous shot with Jack. (01:29:25)
Continuity mistake: Jack chases after the monkey on the broken mast leading across to the Black Pearl. When he gets there, Barbossa says, "Why thank you, Jack." Barbossa's left arm is up and he's holding the rope. In that first shot, much of his white sleeve is out. In the next shot of Barbossa, the white sleeve is mostly covered. Then in his next shot, much of the white sleeve is out again. (01:29:50)
Continuity mistake: Aboard the Black Pearl while watching Interceptor explode, Elizabeth runs over to Barbossa and yells, "You've got to stop it." While Barbossa holds Elizabeth, in the first shot behind her, the left shoulder of her burgundy dress is on her shoulder. In the next front close-up shot, her dress is off her left shoulder, then in the next shot behind her, her dress is on her shoulder again. (01:30:55)
Continuity mistake: Will stands on the Pearl's rail holding a gun under his chin, there are wide shots of everyone on deck, and close-ups of Jack, Elizabeth and Barbossa. The pirates and their captives differ between the close-ups and wide shots, in their appearance, position, and the way the pirates hold their weapons. Two examples: Will says, "And the crew. The crew are not to be harmed," in the close-ups Jacoby is right behind Jack, but in the wide shots he is much further away from Jack. Also in Barbossa's close-ups Pintel stands to the right of Cotton, but in the wide shots Pintel stands to Cotton's left. This type of occurrence happens throughout all of these shots. (01:31:10)
Answer: On Disc 3, Johnny explains, "Take something as solid as Keith Richards and combine it with Pepé Le Pew... I felt... he would resemble a modern day Rastafarian..." Pepé Le Pew is a Looney Tunes cartoon character, based on Charles Boyer's romantic character, Pepé Le Moko. Pepé Le Pew, however, is a romantic amorous cartoon skunk and he has a huge flaw - his 'odor', which he emits in a grand way.
