Continuity mistake: When Peter Parker confronts Uncle Ben's killer in the warehouse, after Parker slams him through the glass windows in the door, the killer drops his gun and pulls out a knife. After he is disarmed of the knife, Peter kicks him up against the wall. At this point the killer has the gun back in his hand. (00:47:50)
Continuity mistake: When fighting the Carjacker, Peter dropkicks him using a pipe. When Peter does this, the Carjacker has his cap on as he moves out of frame. When moving into the next shot, the Carjacker no longer has his hat, which now disappeared into thin air, never to be seen again. (00:47:50)
Factual error: In the graduation scene, watch for the giant spiky orange flowers behind Norman Osborn. These are tropical birds of paradise flowers which grow all over California but would never survive in New York. [Confirmation of that: one contributor was taking a studio tour at Sony studios in Culver City, CA on March 26, 2001, and saw the filming of the graduation scene, complete with Tobey and Kirsten zipping by sitting side-by-side in the jump seat of a golf cart.] (00:49:10)
Continuity mistake: When Osbourne is talking to Peter at the graduation, the scene keeps changing from him having one hand on Peter's shoulder to both to none. You see this just after Harry sees Mary Jane break up with Flash. (00:49:40)
Other mistake: In the scene after Spider-Man stops the convenience store robbers, it shows a newspaper article. This article virtually repeats itself. Here's what you can read: "Witnesses claim an unknown masked man was seen exiting the Ling Deli after stopping two suspects from attempting to rob the establishment. Police spokesman John Young said "we've heard of Samaritans, but in 20 years I've never seen anything like this." The two suspects were taken to the county jail....(cutoff)....attempting to rob that same establishment. Police spokesman John Young said "we've heard of Samaritans, but in 20 years I've never seen anything like this." The two suspects were taken to the county jail." (00:52:25)
Other mistake: During the shots of newspapers with articles about Spider-Man, if you look closely at the shot of the newspaper article just before the shot of Spider-Man putting on his mask, the second column is repeated in the fourth column - easiest to spot is "NYPD spokesperson, Sean Young..." appears twice. (00:52:55)
Continuity mistake: When Peter and Mary Jane are talking outside the diner, her trechcoat collar is first lying flat, then is tucked in, then is flat. It happens several times when the shot goes back and forth from Peter to Mary Jane. (00:55:10)
Continuity mistake: When Mary Jane and Peter are talking in the street right after she left the diner, every time a car passes by behind her and then the camera goes to Peter, those cars would mysteriously vanish since you can clearly see that there are no moving vehicles behind him. (00:55:10)
Continuity mistake: When Peter is talking to Mary Jane outside the diner, the same man wearing a flat cap is walking behind Peter 3 or 4 times. First when Peter says "so you're acting now?", then when he talks about Harry not living on earth, then again when Mary Jane walks off. (00:55:15)
Continuity mistake: When Peter is talking to Mary Jane in front of the diner, a light maroon colored caddy passes by twice. The first time when she says she just got off a job, the second when the boss shouts at her. Sure, there could be two cars the same color in NY, but with the same driver...? (00:55:15)
Continuity mistake: When Peter catches up with Mary Jane outside the cafe, there is a motorcycle that passes by Mary Jane. When the camera cuts back to Peter there is no evidence of a motorcycle passing, not even a sound. (00:55:40)
Continuity mistake: When Peter runs into Mary Jane leaving her job at the diner, when she says "some dream, huh?" she wraps her jacket around her and folds her arms. After a brief cut of Peter her jacket's open - she then says "don't tell Harry", wraps her jacket around herself and folds her arms again. (00:55:45)
Continuity mistake: When Jameson is talking about the headlines regarding Spider-Man, the pencils in the cup keep changing positions between shots. (00:56:00)
Continuity mistake: When Peter is talking with Mary Jane outside the diner where she works, watch the positioning of the shadows in the background. As the camera shoots from Peter's point-of-view, the sun is casting shadows up the street. When the shots change to MJ's point-of-view, the shadows are pointing down the street, as if the sun had just moved ahead several hours. (00:57:30)
Continuity mistake: In the middle of the film when we see Peter, Harry and Norman Osborn talking, Norman says "Perhaps you could tell me who she is, this mystery girl Harry's been dating" If you watch Harry, in one shot he has both arms on the table and in the following shot, he is one arm up and is scratching his head. (00:57:35)
Continuity mistake: When Spider-Man is taking snapshots of the armored car burglary, one of the burglars says "watch the street". As the camera snaps you see them pointing rifles or machine guns towards the sky and when Spider-Man lands on them to dispatch them, the weapons are gone... (00:58:20)
Continuity mistake: In the scene where Spidey is stopping the armored car robbery, he dispatches several thugs with some fancy, acrobatic fighting. When he lands, a money bag is visible in front of him that wasn't there in the wide shot. (00:58:30)
Continuity mistake: When we see Spider-Man protect the armoured car and take out the thieves, we see that Spider-Man throws a robber over his head and the robber hits a wall. The following shot his position has changed lying on the floor. (00:58:35)
Continuity mistake: When Jameson is flipping the pictures of Peter's first batch of photographs, you can see that the 3rd picture he looks at changes into an entirely new photograph, when he puts it down. The one he's looking at is Spider-Man on the side of a building, but when it's on the desk it's Spider-Man kicking a thug in the face. The one he then looks at changes too - it was about to have a bit of sky on the left, but then turns into a photo of a street from above, with no sky visible. (00:58:45)
Continuity mistake: When Peter leaves Jameson's office after becoming a freelancer for him, Jameson closes the door, and at the end of the shot, the door is half-shut, but in the next shot, the door is completely shut. (00:58:45)
Answer: Remember that Green Goblin (Norman Osborne) just found out that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Aunt May's comment about everyone knows he loves Mary-Jane concerns him because he now realizes that Green Goblin might find/kidnap Mary-Jane just to lure Spider-Man into a fight. This is the basis for the whole reason he can't be with her, as he would be potentially putting her in harm's way all the time if they got together.
