Red Dwarf

Season 1 generally

Trivia: The part of Kochanski was originally to have been played by actress Alexandra Pigg (best known for the 1985 movie 'Letter to Bhreznev'). However, just two days into rehearsals, production of Series 1 of "Red Dwarf" was halted by a strike of technicians at the BBC. The production of "Red Dwarf" had to be rescheduled, and Pigg was not available for the new dates. So the part was re-cast to C.P.Grogan (former lead singer of the band 'Altered Images') who played Kochanski throughout series 1 & 2.

Back To Reality - S5-E6

Factual error: While it is true that lithium carbonate can be used to treat depression and other psychiatric disorders, it cannot be administered in gaseous form. It is a very stable salt and only starts to form vapour at 1,310 degress Celcius. Spraying it about as a 'mood stabliser' at that temperature, as Kryten does, is going to kill everyone on the spot.

Suggested correction: A couple of explanations come to mind. After 3 million years, the lithium carbonate may have become contaminated or mutated, resulting in it becoming a less stable salt and/or a change in its chemical structure. Another explanation is that Holly just made a mistake. They have a proven track record of mistakes, saying the wrong things, and generally being stupid.

Salts don't mutate - they don't have genes. If Holly "just made a mistake" and the chemical being sprayed about by Krtyen wasn't lithium carbonate (or it was contaminated), then it would not work as a mood stabiliser. Since it does, it was lithium carbonate and the Boys From The Dwarf are going to die horribly.

All good points. Sounds like contamination is the most likely answer, then.

Kryten - S2-E1

Question: When Holly is saying about how he has changed music he says that because of the 2 new notes he's made instruments would be bigger. "Triangles will have four sides. Piano keyboards the length of zebra crossings. Course, women will have to be banned from playing the cello." I don't understand the joke about the cello part. Could someone please tell me what he means?

Answer: The cello is a large four-stringed instrument, which, when it is played, stands vertically on the floor between the player's legs (assuming they are seated). If it is to grow as large as the other instuments mentioned will, it would require a rather unseemly lack of femininity to be able to encompass it with the legs.
