Continuity mistake: When Bond is racing Xenia at the beginning of the film, the rear Ferrari 355 badge is in one scene there, in the next missing. (00:13:40)
Continuity mistake: At the beginning of the movie, when Bond is racing Xenia's Ferrari, Xenia has to pull of the road to avoid a tractor or something. She then starts to spin, and it looks like she has managed to correct it, and the car starts to spin again. In the next shot, you see her pull out on the road again, but from the angle of the car and speed in the last shot, there is no way she could have corrected that spin and get back on the road that fast, since there is absolutely no traction on grass. (00:14:50)
Continuity mistake: In the beginning of the movie Bond is in the car chase with the Ferrari. Throughout the chase the interior of the Ferrari is beige. Later, when he pulls up to the hotel and looks at the "same" Ferrari, note that the interior is black. (00:15:00 - 00:20:00)
Continuity mistake: In the scene when 007 is in Monaco, he takes a photo of the admiral and his female company. When he is calibrating the camera its to one eye. In the other shot he has the camera to the other eye. (00:21:55)
Factual error: In Monaco, the Admiral's ID card is written only in English. As a Canadian, the card would be both French and English. (00:23:20)
Continuity mistake: When Bond is on the yacht and the guy in the red and blue striped shirt tries to attack him, he wraps a towel round the attacker's head, over the eyes. However when we see Bond throw the attacker the towel is now down round his neck. (00:24:00)
Continuity mistake: After Bond finds the dead Admiral, he jumps off the yacht onto a smaller boat and speeds off towards shore, but he never unties the smaller boat from the yacht. (00:25:10)
Continuity mistake: When the Naval officer is giving his speech about the Tiger helicopter, a row boat starts to pass the warship. Camera cuts and now this rowboat is about to start passing the warship again. This cannot be attributed to the change in angle. (00:25:50)
Continuity mistake: When the dead admiral falls out of the closet on the boat the morning after Xenia kills him, and James Bond opens the closet door, as he's falling he has a straight face and eyes looking straight ahead, but after he lands and it shows his face, his eyes are looking upwards and he's grinning. (00:25:55)
Character mistake: When Boris teases Natalya about not telling her the password to his spike program, she glances down at the keyboard as he types the mystery password ("chair") and should've been able to make it out, given her level of programming expertise. (00:30:26)
Factual error: When Ourumov activates Goldeneye, it shows the targeting reticule on the large wall screen pinpointing Severnaya in central Russia, close to Siberia. However, Severnaya is an island north of mainland Russia. (00:34:16)
Factual error: When the Goldeneye satellite is repositioned for targeting, the display shows a retrograde, east to west orbit. Only a couple of satellites have been sent into retrograde orbits. One use would be for a killer satellite that smashes into other satellites, not one that is hiding in plain sight until needed. A retrograde orbit is no faster than a standard orbit at the same altitude. Not only that but since a retrograde orbit is much more difficult and costly (in terms of fuel and other resources) to achieve, due to working against the Earth's spin instead of benefiting from it, very few satellites use one. This makes the addition of one in Goldeneye something that would draw extra attention from foreign powers, the exact opposite of what a country launching a super-secret satellite weapon would want. (00:35:00)
Continuity mistake: When we first see the Goldeneye sattelite in space, the Earth turns in different directions from one shot to another. (00:37:10)
Other mistake: When the Goldeneye is first fired, watch as the planes collide and then explode, one at a time. The plane that blows up closest to the camera is the exact same explosion, debris and all, that occurs when the second satellite is destroyed at the end of the film in space. (00:39:00 - 01:57:00)
Continuity mistake: When the Mig is falling on the antenna, it goes straight to it at a steep angle, but in the next shot, it passes through another building before and at a different angle. (00:39:00)
Continuity mistake: Near the beginning just before the radar station is destroyed you can see over Natalya's shoulder on the large map, that the Goldeneye is somewhere over northern Russia, the very next frame shows the map with the Goldeneye marker flashing because it is over its target in west Russia. (00:39:25)
Character mistake: At MI6, when M is showing Bond a profile of Ourumov on a screen, Arkhangelsk is misspelt as "Arkhangeesk." (00:46:36)
Continuity mistake: When we see the band preforming in the square in St. Petersberg, there is a shot of them marching left to right. And by the band is a big crowd of people watching them. When the camera changes to Mishkin's office, the crowd has disappeared. (00:47:50)
Revealing mistake: In the scene containing Q describing the operation of the "grenade" pen to Bond, Q is not looking at Bond and appears to be being cued. With careful observation you can see Q's eyes reading the cards. Also, his actions/reactions do not seem fluid but abrupt as he reads to a point where he must do an action of some sort and he performs it suddenly. Much of the scene is shot from a profile view of Q and Bond so as to reduce the obviousness of it (mostly during the longer dialog pieces for Q). (00:49:30)
Continuity mistake: When Q goes to pick up the plane ticket off the X-ray document scanner, the envelope is perched on the lip of the tray. When the camera cuts to an extreme close up the envelope is flat on the tray. (00:49:40)
Answer: The plan was not to capture 007, it was to stage 006's death. Trevelyan's long-term goal was to steal money from the Bank of England and cover it up using the GoldenEye satellite - he presumably did not have time to run the Janus Syndicate and implement this very elaborate plan whilst serving as a full-time MI6 officer. In fact, it was probably the intention that Bond should escape and tell the British government that 006 had died a hero's death.
