The Missing Link is meant to be The Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954); B.O.B. is meant to be The Blob (1958); Ginormica is based on Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman (1958); Dr. Cockroach is copied from The Fly (1958); and Insectosaurus is based on Mosura (1961).
Trivia: When James Brolin was offered the role of George Lutz, he was informed that they didn't have a script to give him. James bought a copy of the novel and began to read it. At two o'clock in the morning, while reading a very intense part of the book, a pair of pants that he had hung up earlier fell to the ground causing him to jump in fright. After that, James agreed to do the film.

After that scene, the old man had a heart attack and died immediately after. Donald Sutherland and members of the film crew tried to save him, but were unsuccessful.
