Kitsunegari - S5-E8
Continuity mistake: How was Modell tried and convicted in 1996 if he only woke up six months ago? Six months before this episode would be at least mid 1997. (00:06:05)
Schizogeny - S5-E9
Continuity mistake: After her father is pulled out of the window, Lisa leans out and there is no glass left on the sill, she even places her hands on it. Later when Mulder and Scully look at it, there is all sorts of jagged edges on the sill. (00:16:35 - 00:20:00)
Kill Switch - S5-E11

Continuity mistake: Uroff-Koltoff Star of Russia in New York Harbor is a completely different ship from Uroff-Koltoff Star of Russia leaving Vladivostok at 17:45. (00:33:10)
The Red and the Black (2) - S5-E14
Continuity mistake: While in the car with Scully, Mulder turns his head aside of Scully towards the side window twice: once when the shot is facing Scully, and just after in the shot facing him. (00:40:25)
Mind's Eye - S5-E16
Continuity mistake: When the policeman passes the phone over to Marty, in the first shot from behind she holds it with two hands, while in the next frontal shot she grabs it with her left hand and then with the right hand. (00:13:20)
Mind's Eye - S5-E16
Continuity mistake: While talking through the jail glass, Marty's face is generally directed straight toward Mulder's face when reflected in the glass, but her head is twisted to the right when filmed from Mulder's side. (00:34:40)
Mind's Eye - S5-E16
Continuity mistake: At The End of this episode when Mulder is talking to Marty through her jail cell, the position of their hands change. In one shot, Mulder's hand is covering hers, and in the next, each of their hands are gripping the cell bars. This goes back and forth a few times. (00:43:00)
Continuity mistake: If the Kernoffs were really devoted Catholics why would they have waited six years to have Dara baptised? (00:00:40)
Continuity mistake: When Dara walks toward the angel, there is only one car, parked on the right side of the street, but when her father approaches her, there is another car parked on the opposite side of the street. (00:02:50)
The Pine Bluff Variant - S5-E18
Continuity mistake: When the bank manager goes to open the door for the brinks truck containing the robbers, the clock on the wall reads 9:45. When the robbers are taking him back to the vault, a couple of shots of the skull-masked robber shows the clock reading about 9:43.
Continuity mistake: When we see the Russian guy get shot and he falls out of his chair, he knocks the chessboard off the table. But when Jeffrey Spender shows his team the tape, the guy hits the board so that it spins around, instead of falling off completely. (00:02:40 - 00:07:55)
Continuity mistake: The chessboard was knocked down by the falling Russian, however in the next shot it is still on the table. (00:02:55)
Continuity mistake: This is probably one of the most intriguing chess plays in the history of mankind. In the first move shown on the screen Gibson moves a white knight from e4 to f6. Then, in the close-up, the situation on the chessboard more or less corresponds to the arrangement of the figures previously shown on the screen. However, in the next shot, when we see the chessboard from the Russian perspective, the arrangement is completely different. Especially, there is no white knight on the chessboard at all. In the following shot the white rook suddenly appears on g8 (and is subsequently beaten by the black king), but in the next move Gibson again moves his white rook on g8, while the black king has miraculously returned to h8 and again beats the white rook. Moreover, Gibson could not play two white rooks, because later on we see that there is still at least one white rook on the chessboard.
Continuity mistake: When the car drives down the hill, the front and rear left window of the car is open, but in the shot from the inside of the car after it is stopped, there is Crump's blood on the closed rear left window. (00:40:05)
Continuity mistake: When the craft is flying over Scully, Mulder, and Morris Fletcher, in the first shot Fletcher stands with his back turned to the agents, but in the next shot he is facing them. (00:03:10)
Continuity mistake: When Jeff is shown for the first time inside the car, we can see that Mulder's face is facing the windshield, but in previous and next shots he is turned toward his colleagues. (00:05:25)
Continuity mistake: During the conversation with Scully regarding Wayne Weinsider, Mulder says "I don't know why. I'm not a psychologist", which must be a big surprise for all viewers, to say the least. Mulder graduated from Oxford University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology (e.g. "Dreamland II") and he worked for some time as a profiler for the FBI (e.g. "Young at Heart"). (00:32:25)
Answer: As he stated many times throughout the series, Mulder needed Scully to be sober and skeptical. Whenever Scully's skepticism wavered and she started questioning her own rationality, Mulder would try to restore her sense of skepticism, because he needed her to be clear-thinking.
