Continuity mistake: In the first close-up shot of the soldier wounded in the courtyard the medic behind him tries to give him some water as the camera pans away to two Vietnamese civilians for a second. In the next shot the medic is still holding the canteen but the injured soldier now has something hanging out of his mouth, that looks like a piece of string, which wasn't there in the previous shot. Continuity mistake: As the helicopters approached Vin Din Dop Colonel Kilgore said to Lance, "We'll come in low, out of the rising sun," but when the helicopters fly over the beach their shadows are directly below them. (00:39:40)

Continuity mistake: Captain Willard introduces himself to Colonel Kilgore and says, "I carry priority papers from Com-Sec intelligence, II Corps". There are three guys in Kilgore's helicopter watching the filming by the side door. This is a wide shot and no other soldier is there but three seconds later another soldier appears standing by the pilot's window. (00:27:25)

Continuity mistake: After the woman tries to feed Captain Willard some rice he looks to his left and sees Colonel Kurtz standing there with one thin ray of sunlight coming down on his head. We saw this spot in the wide shot when the three soldiers placed the captain near the window and it's in the shade, plus the sun is not coming into the room from above but sideways from the right. Continuity mistake: There's a perfect backlit shot of Captain Willard as he swings at Colonel Kurtz and he's now wielding a third machete as he kills him. This one has a square hatchet like blade attached to a long handle. (03:07:45)

Revealing mistake: As Captain Willard stands on the steps of the temple there's a wide shot of the natives. If you watch closely you'll see the movie jump. (03:12:30)

Continuity mistake: Before Captain Willard shoots the injured Vietnamese woman on the sampan he's holding onto a metal bar with his left hand. In the next shot he's not holding onto anything. (01:38:25)

Continuity mistake: As the smoke canister catches fire on the roof and Chef tries to put it out with the fire extinguisher Captain Willard goes from having his back towards Chief Phillips to facing him between shots. (01:16:40)

Continuity mistake: As Dennis Hopper gets the captain some water we see a wide shot of five bamboo cages with a guard standing between them. In the next shot as Dennis Hopper turns around from the fountain the guard is facing the opposite way and is now talking to the prisoner in the cage that was on the left (now behind them). Continuity mistake: After Chef rips the picture from his Playboy magazine he crouches down. In the next shot as he's taping it up he's standing. (01:12:15)

Continuity mistake: Captain Willard sits down at Colonel Kurtz' typewriter after he reads the manuscript and as he moves into the light we see that his right shoulder is covered with mud. To shots later as he emerges from the temple the mud is not there. (03:11:05)

Continuity mistake: Just before Colonel Kurtz falls to the ground we catch a glimpse of him with blood running from the top of his head down the right side of his face. Several seconds later as the lies on the ground dying there are only a few small drops of blood on the right side of his face. (03:08:05)

Revealing mistake: Colonel Kurtz reaches down and catches a fly in his hand and then lets it go. If you look closely the four fingers of his right hand are clinched when he reaches down because the fly is already in his hand. (02:55:00)

Continuity mistake: Clean continues to tell the guys his story and says, "One day the gook took his magazine away from him and wouldn't give them back to him," and Captain Willard's right hand goes from leaning against the machine gun to touching his head between shots. (01:12:30)

Continuity mistake: Three soldiers carry Captain Willard into a room by a window where a woman gives him some water from a ladle. As first the sunlight falls across his waist then in the next shot as she gives him the water the sunlight is now on his face and chest. (02:53:35)

Continuity mistake: As Captain Willard sits in the boat reading and thinking to himself about Colonel Kurtz he unwraps and eats a Hershey bar. He crumples the wrapper with both hands and throws it out of the boat, leaving nothing in his hands. In the next shot he's eating the Hershey bar again and the wrapper is back. (01:15:45)

Continuity mistake: Colonel Kurtz leaves after he finishes reading the Time articles and there's a close-up of Captain Willard's face and chest. He's soaking wet in the close-up but in the next shot, as he collapses trying to leave the room, his face and chest are dry and there isn't as much dirt on the left side of his chest. (02:52:25)

Continuity mistake: The paint on Captain Willard's face changes many times throughout the movie. Two very noticeable examples are right after he kills the colonel, where the paint is almost entirely off his face, and several shots later as he leaves the temple heading back to the boat where his entire face is painted a much darker green then before. Visible crew/equipment: After Chief Phillips is speared if you look closely at his left shoulder you can see his shirt bunched up by the harness underneath that holds both ends of the spear to his body. Later you can see a blood bag underneath his tee shirt as he lies on the floor of the boat dying. (02:22:40)

Continuity mistake: When they first approach Dennis Hopper we see the water on the left side of the boat past where Lance is sitting and there are no flames on it. After Hopper jumps on the boat and goes to shake the captain's hand we see an oil slick burning in the middle of the water. (02:29:40)
