The Spy Who Loved Me

Plot hole: If they assembled the wet bike on the submarine, they wouldn't be able to get it off as it would be too big to fit through the hatch.

Plot hole: When Bond's Lotus is being attacked while it's traveling underwater, it develops a few small leaks, which spray a thin stream of water into the car. When the Lotus drives out onto the beach, Bond rolls down the window and drops a big fish out of the car. How did that get in there? If there was a hole in the car the size of that fish, it would have flooded the driver's compartment and sunk the car.

Plot hole: When the submarine with Bond aboard sees the Liparus it is 6,200 yards away, and over to the side. How can it then suddenly be behind the submarine?

Plot hole: Stromberg One is on 48 degrees West, Stromberg Two is at 22 degrees West, and the Liparus further east. That means that Stromberg Two has sailed at least 28 degrees since its departure from the Liparus. That is more than 2.500 km and would take a submarine several days. How did it get that far in a few hours?

Plot hole: When Bond and Anya make it down to the escape pod Bond pulls out a bottle of wine from a bucket of ice. With Stromberg sitting in his lair and Jaws hiding, who put the ice in the bucket?

Suggested correction: Maybe the ice bucket was always a part of the escape pod.

Ice that doesn't melt at room temperature - now there's an achievement.

Plot hole: Right before Bond hops on the moving camera globe to go blow up the barrier to the control room on the Liparus, they show a shot of one of the firing slots on the control room open and the guards firing at Bond. Through the port, you can see that Bond is on the catwalk above the walkway to the barrier. But when Bond climbs down onto the camera globe, and when he's sliding back on the track, nobody fires a shot, even though he's now in a direct line of fire with those firing ports and the guards have a totally clear shot at him.

Trivia: This applies to Moonraker too - Jaws' "teeth" were so painful that actor Richard Kiel could only keep them in for a few seconds at a time, which is why you don't get too many long shots with them visible. He only wore them when he needed to open his mouth.

Question: How does the Liparus explode and sink at the end? After the nuclear subs have been destroyed, the ship just starts blowing up for no apparent reason. Was there any explanation for it?

Gavin Jackson

Chosen answer: When the nuclear subs have been destroyed, there's an explosion in the control room, and one of the men cries out "Fuel tank!" Liparus has numerous internal fires raging after the battle with her crew. These uncontrolled fires eventually spread to her fuel tanks and ammo storages, one of which explodes in a huge fireball and finally causes Liparus to sink.

I thought the final explosions that sank the Liparus were deliberate self destruction after completing the mission in an attempt to destroy any evidence, rather like when Bolfeld manually triggers explosives after being thwarted in You Only Live Twice.

Liparus sinks slowly, and that would leave her crew plenty of time to evacuate. Angry and armed crew with a grudge against Stromberg.
