Plot hole: About two thirds of the way into the film, Gina comes running into Montebello's to talk to Joe, while Joe bursts into Prestolani's to confront Gina. Of course, in typical romantic comedy fashion, they just miss each other. However, the two pizzerias are directly next to each other, and both characters were using the front doors. Therefore, there is no way that they could possibly have missed each other.
Plot hole: The movie takes place before and around 1938 and, supposedly ends in that year, following the entrance in Shanghai of the Japanese, with the exodus by many Chinese and foreign residents. Ralph Fiennes' character, as an American ex-diplomat and businessman, would have resided, have bank accounts, his car, etcetera, in the foreign concessions. The Japanese did not occupy the concessions until after Pearl Harbor, so there was no need for him to flee the city, as a refugee without a passport and with little or no money, sailing towards Macao in a fragile Chinese junk. He could just have driven or walked a few blocks to any of the "Western" concessions, from where he could have married Natasha Richardson's character, obtained U.S. passports (White Russians had none, as the rest of her family in the movie until assisted by an official in the French Consulate) for her and her daughter, purchased a ticket in a safer vessel, sold his assets (regardless of the damage to his club, he still had a house, furniture, a car, presumably bank accounts, etc.).
Continuity mistake: In the scene just after Andre has dragged Angela from the river, towards the beginning of the film, the two engage in a lengthy conversation. As the camera moves between close-ups of Angela's face, and shots of Andre, where Angela is standing in the background, her hair keeps changing from being off her face to covering her face.
Continuity mistake: When Chris finds Nola in the Tate modern, her arm changes from bent to down between front and back shots.
Revealing mistake: When Rose and her boyfriend are making a toast in her apartment we hear a perfect chiming sound. We can see that they're both holding their glasses by the bowl instead of holding them from the stem. Holding a glass this way would never allow a chiming sound.
Continuity mistake: When the men are in the lounge room, one of them is playing GTA III on a PS2. Note the car he is in (a squad car) and the health (a heart logo near it with 68). Pattie enters room and says goodbye. The men try to figure out who slept with her. On figuring it out they jump up and leave room, we get one more shot of the game and he is now in a different car and health is 100. You will notice that he doesn't play it long enough to change cars as he is not looking at the screen long enough. During the scene you can hear the sirens of the squad car he was in, meaning he didn't change cars. Also he never would of regained full health that quick. (00:56:05)
Factual error: When a young Steve Mills is struggling for conversation topics with Lisa in 1962, he comments that her black eye makes her look like the Tareyton commercial. However, those "I'd rather fight than switch" ads weren't aired until late 1964.
Factual error: Towards the beginning of the film, the Cashes receive a notice about their rent. It's the 1950's and the address has a ZIP code. ZIP codes were not introduced until 1963.
Continuity mistake: When Annika and Shiver are trapped in Ollie's pan, Annika's purple hair ribbon disappears in a few shots.
Visible crew/equipment: The scene where Anna Hathaway and Bijou Phillips are rapping when on the bed together, the boom mic can be seen moving in the background. (00:53:05)
Continuity mistake: After dinner, Rafi and Lisa are in the kitchen putting away the food. Rafi puts the meat in a food container and Lisa closes it. After Rafi sits down the same container is open again.
Factual error: In the scene transitioning to the Christmas holidays, a shot of Central Park is shown with Christo and Jeanne-Claude's The Gates, Central Park, New York City, 1979-2005 in the park. However, this display was unfurled on February 12, 2005, after the holidays were over.
Revealing mistake: At the clinic, when Sushmita Sen reads Katrina Kaif's suicide e-mail, she is reading it in a Yahoo "Compose" e-mail window, which means the note was typed on the clinic computer, not Katrina's computer. (00:10:20)
Continuity mistake: In the beginning, the bride's mother puts a clip in her younger daughter's hair, but, in the next shot, the clip is gone.
Continuity mistake: After the dream sequence fighting with the kaijus, Da Gai mom wakes him up with a slipper to the face. The couch he's sleeping on sports two doilies in the first shot, only one in the next, and then none. (00:04:10)
Other mistake: The short scene wherein Jane's mother is carrying a tray of food to Jane's room and says, "This isn't a home. It's a hotel" doesn't make sense. There's already a tray of food on the floor next to the door that has a sign "Please, do not disturb" hanging on the knob, which is on the left side. Jane's mother passes that door and stops at a door right next to it with a "Do NOT Disturb" sign hanging from the knob, which is on the right side. Two close-together doors to one bedroom? (00:45:50)
Continuity mistake: When Katya and Dove are having it out at the ball, the amount of liquid in Dove's champagne glass continually changes. It starts off nearly empty, then becomes nearly full and goes back to nearly empty. It even gets to the point when she drinks the remainder of the champagne, yet a second later the glass is once again nearly full.
