Continuity mistake: When Frankie is telling Johnny that she has been reading about him, there are several men in the background. A couple of shots later, the characters in the background are different people altogether, including two women. (00:01:07)
Revealing mistake: When Nova blasts through the building, the wall where the hole is created has already been drawn as misshapen and discolored, likely to make it easier for the animators to animate. (00:02:53)
Plot hole: When Frankie tries to get Johnny to chase her out into space, he tells her he can't follow and warns her to turn back due to the thin atmosphere not being able to keep their flame powers active, and indeed her flames die out, and she begins falling back to Earth. However, several minutes later in the episode, both of them are just outside of the Earth when Terrax arrives, and again at the end after she becomes the new herald of Galactus, Johnny follows her into space well beyond Earth before his flames die out. (00:03:15 - 00:06:03)
Continuity mistake: When Frankie and Johnny are kissing, just before Terrax arrives, they are next to the spire of the Empire State Building. When the shot changes, they are suddenly in outer space. (00:05:53)
Continuity mistake: When we first see Bruce Banner, he remarks that the gamma patch he is wearing on his left pectoral didn't prevent him from turning into the Hulk. However, the patch was never there when he was Hulk just moments earlier. (00:01:46 - 00:06:27)
Deliberate mistake: When Johnny is watching the news footage of the Hulk battling Thing, all the footage is merely clips from that portion of the episode, including parts of the battle that were happening before the camera crews even showed up. (00:02:50 - 00:07:20)
Continuity mistake: When Hulk is leaping away from Central Park, his reddish brown pants are incorrectly colored blue. (00:05:36)
Other mistake: When Dr. Doom's attendant is removing the wrapping from his left hand, in the first shot, he is simply holding onto the wrapping and moving his hand back and forth. (00:05:42)
Continuity mistake: When Dr. Doom is first seen, his left hand is bare, and he is wearing a gauntlet on his right hand. When the attendant finishes removing the wrapping from his bare hand, Doom walks over to a console and picks up two gauntlets off it, and both of his hands are now bare. Additionally, Doom's fingernails started out being short, but when he picks up the gauntlets, they are suddenly longer. (00:05:42)
Revealing mistake: When the attendant is removing the wrapping from Dr. Doom's hand, in the second shot you can see the wrapping passing through Doom's hand. (00:05:48)
Continuity mistake: When Johnny is on the couch watching the news, there is no coffee table next to him. When the shot changes, a coffee table is visible behind his torso. (00:07:09)
Continuity mistake: When Johnny is first shown watching TV, his head is resting against two large pillows, one white and one pink, and Sue is walking towards him. When the shot changes, the both Sue and the pink pillow have disappeared. A few shots later, the pink pillow is back, but now both pillows are smaller. (00:07:11)
Continuity mistake: When Reed first appears onscreen, he is holding a set of vials in his right hand. When the shot changes, he raises his right hand to rub his eyes, and his hand is now empty. (00:07:25)
Continuity mistake: When Reed holds up the vial to Thing, Thing is facing him. When the shot changes, Thing has his back turned to Reed. (00:08:04)
Other mistake: This series is in the same continuity as the other Marvel animated series that aired around the same time - X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man, and The Incredible Hulk - by virtue of each aforementioned show crossing over with at least one of the others. However, the cameo appearance by Scarlet Spider in this episode creates a contradiction with Spider-Man, as in that series, Scarlet Spider was an alternate - and possibly cloned - version of Spider-Man from a different reality, who never visited the reality that this and the other Marvel shows take place in. (00:09:31)
Continuity mistake: When the X-Men are watching Johnny and Rick Jones fly overhead, Wolverine's jacket briefly changes color. Additionally, Gambit's eyes change from having white sclera with dark irises, to correctly being black sclera with red irises, and then back again. (00:09:33)
Continuity mistake: When Dr. Doom captures Bruce Banner/Hulk, they are wearing blue pyjama bottoms. When Hulk busts out of Doom's Latverian embassy, his pants are incorrectly colored reddish brown. (00:12:09)
Other mistake: When Johnny is asking Rick Jones where Dr. Banner is, he pulls up the sleeve of his glove to look at the time on his watch. However, there is no bulge on his wrist to indicate he is wearing a watch under the glove in the first place. (00:12:29)
Continuity mistake: When Thing punches Hulk up towards the building, Hulk is flying towards windows. When the shot changes, Hulk is shown crashing through a hotel guest's wall, with no windows in sight. (00:13:13)
Continuity mistake: When Hulk and Thing are battling in the street, the driver's side door to the taxi that is next to them is open. When Thing punches Hulk and Hulk goes flying out of view, the door to the taxi is now closed. (00:13:32)
Answer: Gleaned from the Internet: Much of the negative reaction was due to the poor, simplistic, and outdated quality of the animation where the characters moved stiffly and clumsily through scenes. There were also some obvious animation compositing gaffs. The animation colors were also criticized as being overly bright and cheery and out of character to the established story's darker tone. The broad humor of the first season was replaced by a more mature narrative between the characters.
