Revealing mistake: Rockford is at the public phone with his client; during the scene, the same extras (guy with grey jacket and pink shirt, a nun and others) keep walking keep and forth in the lobby all the time. (00:02:30)
Continuity mistake: Rockford speeds up to shake off the guy that is following him. They both take a sharp turn, but the pursuer almost collides with another car. Next time Rockford's car is shown after that, the driver is wearing just a red shirt, not Rockford's houndstooth jacket. (00:05:30)
Continuity mistake: Rockford rear-ends an unsuspecting fella that is paying the parking. He moves the car in the wide shot (he has to, the whole point is that he's pushing the car out of the way and bypassing the bars), but in the close-ups of the guy the car hasn't budged an inch. (00:05:40)
Visible crew/equipment: The mysterious person who was chasing Rockford apparently loses him in the parking lot. As he drives away, on the sidewalk there's filming equipment by the entrance of the lot, and it cuts to an angle that is exactly what they were filming. (00:06:50)
Continuity mistake: Jim got the address of the car and realises it was a fellow private detective who was following him. He then goes to answer the door. He opens it looking straight forward in the first shot, but in the reverse angle he is foolishly looking away allowing the goons to surprise him. (00:10:55)
Continuity mistake: When Rockford is allowed to remove the blind man's glasses, the pen and pencil in front of the boss jump closer to the open journal. (00:13:10)
Continuity mistake: At the party in Rockford's flashback, Loren says "Say Cathy, what about some backgammon?" Behind him, some chap with bad blonde hair and beige shorts and polo shirt walks from left to right. Reverse shot, and the same guy is walking behind Rockford. (00:17:10)
Deliberate mistake: After Rockford pulls into the gas station and wipes down the windshield he speeds away to lose the tail. When he passes the park bench it's a flipped shot, then when the tail passes the park bench it's another flipped shot. (00:18:15)
Audio problem: Warner Jameson is making perfectly clear to Jim how much in control he is. When he says that he plays a mean game, part of the audio is dubbed in and does not mix with the rest. (00:21:40)
Continuity mistake: After the fiasco at the gambling table, Rockford goes back to his motel. He parks his car pretty badly, oblique with the front wheel very far from the parking line. When he tries to chase the two 'chamber of commerce' gangsters, the car is waiting for him nicely parked. (00:27:30 - 00:30:30)
Revealing mistake: Torrance Beck and his men load Rockford on the car to dispose of him. They get ambushed, with 2 cars suddenly turning 90° blocking the road. Unexpected? Perhaps, but look at the asphalt; apparently it's a regular thing in that part of the road. There are already skidmarks reproducing the exact same movement. (00:33:30)
Continuity mistake: At the Feds' office, Rockford asks FBI Agent David Shore "Would you tell me what's going on?", with his hand on top of the mug. The hand was around it before the cut. (00:35:25)
Continuity mistake: Rockford is incredulous about getting away so easily with a chore, and asks his dad "You mean it's not gonna cost me or anything?" Rocky has his can of beer up high, but in the reverse shot his arm is on the armrest. (00:41:30)
Continuity mistake: At the taco stand, Jim asks Susan "What's your problem?" She answers while a guy who was nowhere in sight before passes behind her. (00:53:15)
