Searching (2018)

I rented this movie from RedBox.

So I had been seeing trailers for this film for a while now, and was curious to rent it. I just never got around to it and was renting other films. However it was nearing the back of the RedBox listings and would soon not be available any more, so with code I got in my email to rent one get one free, I got Searching.

And it was great!
Filmed entirely from the perspective of someone looking at a computer, with a few instances of the Found Footage format here and there, it was actually amazing. It's engaging, and gripping. The twists and turns the film takes you through will surprise you, and it's very cleverly done. For the last half of the movie I was on the edge of my seat all the way to the very end with the various twists on the ending. I wasn't sure what was going to happen, nor did I guess any of the twists really. I was surprised, shocked, and thoroughly entertained.

The acting was on point, the tech showcased well. And I can believe that something like this could, and probably has actually happened.
I say this is a high recommend and a great watch. Go for it, rent it while you can. It won't be in RedBox much longer.

Mistake Status: I noticed one in my first viewing. Given the nature of this movie and how it's filmed, it's hard to really catch many mistakes, much less continuity errors. But maybe I'll revisit it some day.

Shazam! (2019)

I rented this movie from RedBox.

Well it's about damn time DC was able to make a legit good and funny movie. This might just be the DCEU's best yet.
A good turn around from the slog fest they'd been putting out under the Slo-Mo king, Zack Snyder. This was fun! Entertaining, and just... warm. A DC movie that's actually colorful and fun? What blaspheme is this!? It's a breath of fresh air and I can't recommend it more. Zachary Levi nails this role.

Mistake Status: It's a superhero movie. So of course I'll get to examining it closely when I can.

Sniper (1993)

I own this movie on DVD.

I found a 4 pack in the Walmart $5 movie bin that had Sniper 1-3 and Sniper Reloaded in it. And then just by pure coincidence, my mom got me Sniper Legacy for like my birthday or something. Only then after looking into it did I realise... there are 7 movies in this franchise. Seven! like. Wtf? I had no idea about that.

So I finally got around to watching the original and well... it was actually pretty good. Noting major or amazing, but it was pretty good. I liked the story, I liked the main character. But the spotter guy was a bit annoying at times.
It's good for it's time and what it is.
It's my introduction to the series and well, hopefully they just get better from here.
I've nothing really special to say about it... it's just a good film.

Mistake Status: Oh yeah, you can bet I'll be combing through a movie like this at some point. I'll have to dissect this series as a whole.

I rented this movie from RedBox.

Absolutely excellent. I haven't seen the first movie since it came out, but in my opinion this one is funnier and better. I was smiling the whole way through.
The jokes landed every time, and the references were great.
Somehow the story even topped the previous one, with this one being about how siblings can fight and then come together and get along for some fun.

Sure, there was some absurd Leftist agenda undertones to the film with the whole SJW kick against masculinity... but it somehow didn't distract from the movie. And it was subtle enough that unless you really knew what to look for, you wouldn't even realise it's there. But Hollywood is saturated with that crap now-a-days. It was refreshing how little impact it actually had on the film and that they didn't make a huge deal about it.

This movie... just might be the best one I've seen yet this year. Even more than Endgame. I loved it!

Mistake Status: Maybe some day.

Hellboy (2019)

I rented this movie from RedBox.

I love the original two films staring Ron Pearlman as our shaved horned hero. When I heard that the third film in what was meant to be a trilogy was finally confirmed to be dead, and that this reboot was being made... I was upset to say the least.
However, seeing the trailers for this film did actually get my hopes up, that it would be good and en enjoyable experience.

I was very wrong.
This movie is a shameful piece of cinema that looks, feels, and behaves terribly. The acting, writing style, and general feel of the movie just made me think of the very bad hero films of the 90's, like Spawn. And if you're movie is making me think of Spawn... you've got some serious problems.
Not only that, but the effects were terrible. The CGI was ugly, and clunky. Most of the effects looked like they would be barely passable for the early 2000's... and this is a movie from 2019.
That is not a good combo at all.

The writing was horrible and the pacing like an adhd kid on Acid. The film had no real aim, or sense of direction, just seeming like it was trying to move from one random scene to another and just piecing them together however they could.
And the humor was very hit or miss, with most of the time it being a miss.
The only reason I give this movie 2 stars, is because at least some of it was enjoyable. There were actually a few good laughs, and some of the actors did feel like they were trying. Just they were not giving very good material to work with.

I had real hopes for this film... and I was massively let down.

Mistake Status: It's a hero film. My bread and butter for this site. Of course I'll revisit it and give it a good thorough dissecting once I get a working disk drive for my laptop.

Rain Man (1988)

I watched this movie on Netflix.

I've heard about this 'legendary' movie for years, but never really had the chance to see it. In fact, I didn't realise it was as old as it was and thought it was more of a mid 90's film.

Finally going into it, I found it to be as delightful and good as I had heard. And Dustin Hoffman's performance was spot on. I myself have an autistic nephew, and how Hoffman plays the part is similar in many ways. Grade A performance for sure.

And this early Tom Cruise was good also. Not quite as polished as he is in later years, but still has that youthfulness to him. Over all, I really enjoyed this film and the emotional parts did get to me.

Mistake Status: Only really caught one during my viewing. Not sure I'll go back.

SuperFly (2018)

Rented this movie from RedBox.

I never saw the original film and really know nothing about it. Seeing the trailers to this remake got me at least interested enough to rent it.
I didn't expect much from it honestly and it looked like your typical gang/drug hustle movie that you see a dime a dozen. However this did at least please me in many of it's aspects with some unique relations and whammy surprises.
I also loved that this is not an origin story. Doesn't retread over every little detail of how Priest (the main character), got to the point and prestige he is in the film. You're just thrust into the middle of it with him at the height of his career. Only a little bit of his past is shown in short and simple flashbacks that actually don't take away from the film or seem like a distraction, but however actually do the film justice.

And seeing the surprise fighting skills this guy has in that first fight scene was awesome. And the acting was pretty good to.
I didn't expect to enjoy the movie as much as I did.
It's not great, but it is good. If you like films like that you'll enjoy it to.

Gotta say it's at least worth a watch.

Mistake Status: Caught a few on the first viewing. I don't know if I'll ever go back to it. Maybe. Maybe not.

Toy Story 4 (2019)

I saw this movie in theaters with my mom and my son.

I was skeptical at first going in. Needless to say with how Toy Story 3 ended and was like the perfect ending to the series.
I grew up with these movies, with the first one coming out when I was 5. So I could relate to Andy's journey through these films very well.

They hold a childhood nostalgia for me and I thought that the end of Part 3 was a perfect book end to leave the franchise on.
I heard that the developers weren't planning to make a 4th one, but then they had an idea for another story but would not do it unless they knew for sure they could make it as good or better than the third. So I remand optimistic about it.

Then I went and saw it in theaters...
and I was not disappointed!

I loved this movie! It continues the journey of Woody in this new mid life crisis story arch for him under his new kid in a very good and organic way. The flow is great and things get crazy after his new kid makes a new toy of her own. The path is set and our heroes have new hurtles to over take.
The villain of the film was very well done to. At first I thought she was pretty generic and stock, but as the film progresses and you learn more about her... you find that isn't true at all. And her character arch is beautiful. I was feeling more sorry for her than even Woody.

The movie will hit you right in the feels to, many times. There was only really 2 big scenes in Toy Story 3 that got everybody crying. However there are a lot more in this film and scattered all through out. This is the most emotionally driven and mature of the franchise by far and I loved it.

My only beef with the film is how most of the other side characters, including Buzz, seemed to get more of the shaft or put on the back burner for the film. And how it ends, it seems that if there is a 5th, they might not even be in the movie at all.

Speaking of which, the way the movie ends, I can see where they could possibly go with yet a 5th film. And honestly, if they can keep making them this good, I wouldn't mind that at all. It's rumored there will be a 5th and possibly even a 6th movie. And with how great these films are, I look forward to the future.

Tory Story 4 just might be my new favorite of the entire franchise.

Mistake Status: N/A Didn't really see any in theaters.

Mandy (2018)

I rented this movie from RedBox

Okay, hands down this movie is amazing!
Probably one of the most perfect roles to put an actor like Nick Cage in ever. His style just fits like a glove.
This is a modern movie but made to feel like and pay homage to the over the top style movies of the 80's. And it gloriously recreates that feel like an 80's cult classic. Things like Evil Dead or Lost Boys. But then takes that and cranks it up to a whole new level.

The film is beautiful, and even the random cartoon animated dream sequences are gorgeous. And as a cult movie... literally about a guy seeking revenge against a crazy cult that kills his wife, is balls to the wall insane.
From a demon biker gang to Nick Cage literally fighting a redneck in a sword fight with chainsaws. Like, actually fighting each other with two different chainsaws in a sword fight style battle.
The acting is amazing, the style is great and the feel of the film just sucks you in.

This is a highly recommended by my part and I say it's a must see. Especially for Nicolas Cage fans like me.
Most of his direct to video films the last few years have been pretty hit or miss. (Mom and Dad and Looking Glass being pretty good but Humanity Bureau and Between Worlds being horrible)
But this one is a smash hit! and amazing!

I say rent this and check it out. You won't be disappointing. Fully a 5 star film.

Mistake Status: Found a few on the first watch. I will for sure try to buy this film and collect Nick Cage movies in the future. I fully plan to revisit this movie.

The Front Runner (2018)

I rented this movie from Red Box.

In all honesty, this movie was kinda boring. But what do you expect from a movie set around a Democrat presidential candidate from the late 80's that didn't even win?
The movie itself was pretty good, though I'm not sure how historically accurate it is, considering it is Hollywood after all. And most of Hollywood is controlled by the super Left.
So I'm guessing they dumbed this film down a bit and tired to paint their Democrat into a brighter color.

That being said, it's still good enough and enjoyable enough to watch. And still really shows the tendencies and habits of Democrats as cheaters and lairs. Adulterers and deceivers only worried about getting more votes and their own self gain.
JFK, this guy, Clinton, Obama... the list goes on.
It's really a wonder anybody even votes blue any more.

Mistake Status: No interest in going back to this film.

Wow, I'd heard about this movie before and that it was good... but I didn't know how good it was. I finally watched it and loved it. A very cleaver movie with good jokes and very well written. I laughed through the film and found it to be pretty timeless.

Platoon (1986)

Watched this on Netflix

As is, this movie is pretty good. For what it is for it's time and when it was made. I can see how it's a classic and it does hold up... decently.
However it's horribly dated now and suffers from the lack of technology used when filming. As good as it is, I would love to see it remade by today's standards by someone who really knew how to handle the film.

10,000 B.C. (2008)

I watched this movie on Netflix.

Welp, just putting this out there, I didn't really like this movie.
It was okay at first, with it at least being watchable. It's just very generic and kinda boring. Full of cliches and so predictable it was frustrating.

It feels like every other movie of this type that I've see, so much so that multiple times I was questioning myself if I've actually seen this movie before in the past. But I know I haven't. It's just more of the same.

But that being said, it was an okay decent movie until the end. Then it started ripping off 300, especially with the main enemy is defeated in the end. And then the film completely ruins it for me with a stupid ending. It tries to give a surprise sad ending that is just not earned at all. And then only a minute later through mumbo jumbo bullcrap, it's undone without any real consequences, making the already dumb sad ending completely pointless.
And again, it just tries way too hard at ripping off parts of 300

It was a decent movie until the end ruined it. I have to give this a 2 stars. Barely a 2 and 1/2 if I could.

Mistake Status: I caught one while watching it, I have no intention of revisiting this movie.

Warning!
This review will contain a few spoilers for this movie.

I just saw this film in theaters and I was very pleased. It was a nice lighter toned story as a break from the heavier stuff from Endgame and really helped propel Spider-Man forward in the MCU.
I really liked how they handled Mysterio in this film with the illusions and his more correct origins in special effects. Going in knowing his past in the comics, it was easy to start seeing through his guise but it did a good job of leading me on where I wasn't exactly sure from one point to another. So much so that with the mid credit scene, I'm not entirely sure if he's really gone or not.
Parts of it kept me guessing and the post credit scene was a real... hmm... interesting twist. I have no idea where they are going with that but I look forward to future movies.

My only issues with the film is it's a bit too light. I get why they needed to shift tones from Endgame but it didn't feel like the consequences of that film weight heavily enough on Peter in this one.
They have effectively turned Tony Stark into the Uncle Ben of this universe. But it felt like they kinda brushed this aside a bit too much. Yes it's very much there in the film... but it felt like they mostly tried to focus on Peter's relationship with MJ and Mysterio with the Tony and Happy subplot of his motivations pushed a little bit to much to the side. However, it still works well and I see this as a solid good film in the franchise and a nice kick start to the next faze of the MCU.

Another thing I loved about this movie is it felt much more self contained that some of the previous films. Marvel has been known lately for their films almost feeling like just one big ad for their next film with so much alluding to and trying to just get to the next one. This one more lingered on the past and kept this one self contained where this was a solid flowing story from start to finish without really trying to push the next film. So much so I really have no idea what the next one is! And that's very nice.

Mistake Status: Eh... I might get to it eventually. Still having computer issues which has slowed me down on this site very badly.

5th Passenger (2018)

I rented this movie from RedBox.

I'll say one thing right off... that the movie actually has a fairly good idea going for it. The concept is interesting and the setting could have worked.
Only it's held back by bad acting, terrible direction, very bad special effects on the alien, and a plot twist worthy of M Knight Shamalan.

The movie does get bonus points, however, for putting Marina Sirtis in it. Though she has only a little actual screen time. It's nice to see Councilor Troy on a space ship once more.

I was enjoying the film well enough, and was considering giving it a 3 star rating... possibly even 4 star to be generous to a low budge film. But then the twist at the end happened and it just killed the whole thing. It's bad...

Mistake Status: Got some while renting it. I'm not going back to this film.

Quantom X

I rented this movie from RedBox and now bought the DVD.

Back when I saw the Constantine movie staring Keanu Reeves, I had no idea this was a DC character. It wasn't until the animated film, Justice League: Dark, that I learned that. And he's a cool character... Almost sorta kinda like DC's less powerful version of Dr. Strange but on much more of a demonic and witch craft level. But then again not. (though that does lead to a hilarious line in the film that I laughed at for a good 3 minutes)

This movie is a bit confusing however in when or where it takes place in which series. As it seems to follow with the same animation style and design from the Justice League Dark movie, with it being a continuation of Constantine's story in that universe... But yet at the same time it's slated as being part of the Constantine TV show, which is a completely different continuity from the animated DC universe. So where exactly it falls... I'm unsure. So I'm just not going to worry about that right now.

The movie delves into Constantine's troubled past, and how he became the man he is today. Battling his past and inner demons (actually literally on both of those fronts), where he seeks to rectify his mistake of the past and find redemption. Though that past literally finds him first and puts him on the path.

I love the dynamic it shows between him and his childhood friend who is a major part of the movie... and the heartbreaking ending for them. I won't spoil what happens... er, not in this review anyways.

I've always sorta been a light weight when it comes to witch craft and dark magic and demonic things in movies and shows, due to religious reasons, but I did enjoy this greatly despite it rubbing me the wrong way at times. I'd recommend this to anybody who is a fan of the character hero movies in general. I've added it to my ever grown collection of animated DC and Marvel films. It's good!

Mistake Status: I found a few on my initial watch when rented the film. I did buy the DVD and I'm slowly working my way through the animated hero films if I can get my pattern on track. So I will for sure revisit this film later on when it's in my rotation and really comb through it.

Halloween (2018)

I saw this movie in theaters.

I'll be honest, it's been quite a while since I've seen the other Halloween movies. And I'm not even sure I've seen them all. I know I saw the first two and H20, as well as the first film of the reboot, but other than that I can't recall the others other than reviews on line.

This film I was pleasantly surprised it turned out great! While I've never been a huge fan of the Halloween series, I still appreciated it and what it's done for the horror and slasher genera of films as a whole... both good and bad.
H20 had it's ups and downs as an attempted reboot sequel to the first film. Where as this again reboot sequel seemed to really hit it home. I can't really think of much of anything that I would complain about it. It's a Halloween flick through and through, and delivers on what you'd expect as well as keeping a few surprises and clever ideas.
It really delves into the brutality of Michael and I love it~

It makes me wanna go back and watch the other um... 9 films, in the series. Even the bad ones. It's been a long time, and I'm now more of a fan of the series than before.

I just wish they would fix their damn naming of films. It's already confusing enough that this is the forth part two in the series. Yeah seriously, the fourth part two. XD

Anyways, I thought it was great, took a date to the film. Even though since she was running late I missed the first 10-15 minutes... I still enjoyed it. I'll be sure and rent it when it comes out.

Mistake Status: I picked up on a few continuity issues during the feature... but I forgot them by the time I got out. I just remembered one mistake that stuck out to me. I'll probably revisit this film at some point and will for sure spot some more mistakes when I eventually rent it. But for now, I've just got the one.
