La Confidential (1997)

Question: Sid Hudgens uses the phrase "Off the record, on the q.t., and very hush-hush." What does "q.t." stand for?

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: "QT" is slang which literally means "quiet" and it is also used as a police radio term which means "secrecy required regarding location."

La Confidential (1997)

Chosen answer: Yes, Dudley Smith was Irish.

Mark English

Chosen answer: In the episode "Abra Cadaver" Tom Noonan, who played The Tooth Fairy in 'Manhunter', appeared as the bad guy. Since Grissom was the main investigator, many fans saw a similarity.

Red Dragon (2002)

Question: In Brooklyn, why does Francis Dolarhyde eat the Blake painting? I've watched the movie twice, and I still don't understand that scene.

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: Dolarhyde thinks that by eating the painting, he can destroy the Red Dragon from inside of him. He is trying to stop the monster/killer side of his personality because he wants to lead a normal life with Reba.

Red Dragon (2002)

Question: Why did Brett Ratner bother making this film if, essentially, it's just a scene-for-scene remake of "Manhunter"?

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: First, it's not a scene by scene remake - they didn't even use the same script. Secondly, the first movie was made with low production values, the star at the time had only been a bit player in a couple of movies. Since the movie of the second novel was a huge hit in 91, the third novel a hit in 01, plans for a remake of the first novel were probably put into motion before William Petersen made it big on CSI, which didn't even start until late in 2000. And let's face it, everybody wanted to see Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal again.

Manhunter (1986)

Question: When talking to Freddy Lounds, why does Francis Dolarhyde wear the stocking over his face?

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: He wears the stocking over his face for two reasons: (a) to protect his identity (to make Lounds think he'll survive) and (b) remember that Francis believes he is an "ugly monster" so he is also wearing the stocking to defer judgement away from him.

Finding Nemo (2003)

Chosen answer: Nigel is a pelican - he appears to be modelled on a Brown pelican (although that particular species is not actually native to Australia).

Tailkinker

Chosen answer: The literal translation is "Vilnius Principal", but that doesn't sound as imposing.

Schoolmaster is correct. Nastavnik means male teacher or instructor, i.e. a schoolmaster. It does not mean "Principal/Headmaster/Head Teacher."

Question: Is Wilbur the Albatross the brother of Orville the Albatross from the first film? It would make sense if they were making a Wright Brothers joke.

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: Yes, they are brothers.

Freeway (1996)

Question: Where does Vanessa's family live? It must be pretty far south if Bob Wolverton is going up to Los Angeles.

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: Stockton.

Hamster

Answer: Not stated, but a bit confusing. Vanessa's car breaks down in Sylmar (just north of Los Angeles), but Bob says he's only heading to LA (indicating somewhere South of LA). This is lead to being more like a mistake but leaving as an answer.

Chosen answer: Candace Bushnell has been quoted as saying that Carrie was a kind of "alter ego" for herself, so its possible that some of the situations that Carrie describes are fictional accounts of her own experiences.

General questions

What is involved in the process of principal photography?

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: Principal photography is simply the shooting of a film, whether on location on city streets, on an island somewhere or on set at a studio, etc., during a specific number of months - for instance beginning in the summer of 2005 carrying into the spring of 2006. Many times the production can be halted or pushed ahead because of actors' and crew's schedules or even strikes. Once principal photography is wrapped the actors go on to their next project and post-production attends to things like CG work, numerous sound effects - like foley and special effects, and if necessary (usually it is) actors come to the studio for looping/ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) or pickup shots - usually close-ups for a particular scene, which means that the actor's 'look' in the film has to be duplicated.
