The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Continuity mistake: When the Arkenstone is found, the miner who found it has one hand on the wall and his other hand by his side. In the next shot, one of his hands is suddenly reaching for the stone. (00:03:35)

Casual Person

Continuity mistake: In the opening scene with older Bilbo and Frodo, the mailbox is next to the gate. In Fellowship of the Ring, the mailbox was behind the edge of the gate. (00:09:20)

Casual Person

Continuity mistake: The shot where Frodo walks back into Bag End with the mail and the shot where Gandalf knocks on the Bag End door in Fellowship of the Ring are apparently the same setting, but it is different between the two different movies. First, the grass around the bench closest to the door has long grass around it, but there is short grass in Fellowship. Second, behind the bench is some sort of bucket on its own. In Fellowship, there are a few things next to it that aren't even there in The Hobbit. Third, further behind the bench is a lamp post, about a meter and a half away from some pink flowers, that was right next to the pink flowers in Fellowship. Fourth, next to the window are some green flowers that cover half of the windows. In Fellowship, those green flowers are a much lighter green and cover the entire window. Considering only an hour passed between these two times it's hardly possible the flowers would grow, and since Bilbo was too busy working on his story, he wouldn't have moved something. (00:09:30)

Casual Person

Continuity mistake: When Frodo is talking to Bilbo about him being unsociable, Bilbo starts to turn to Frodo with a note to put on the gate. In the next shot, he starts to turn around again. (00:11:20)

Casual Person

Continuity mistake: The scene where Bilbo first meets Gandalf. As Bilbo says "Not Gandalf the wandering wizard who made such excellent fireworks?", the grip of Gandalf's staff changes between two shots. (00:14:10)

Casual Person

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Dwalin arrives, Bilbo has his hand on the door when he says "Is what down where?" His hand is by his side in the following shot. (00:16:35)

Casual Person

Continuity mistake: When Fili and Kili arrive, the door is left open. We never hear the door close, yet it is closed when Bilbo goes to get the door for Gandalf and the other dwarves. (00:19:00 - 00:19:40)

Suggested correction: So... What's your point? I can, and I'm sure you can, close your door without making a sound. Plus the scene isn't one continuous shot so there is no reason it couldn't have been closed off camera.

Continuity mistake: During the song "Blunt the Knives", Balin is seen in a shot from behind sitting at the end of the dining table. He is shortly afterwards seen dancing with a broom two doorways behind. The next shot then shows him sitting down again, bouncing plates off one he is holding. (00:27:20)

Continuity mistake: In the scene where the dwarfs are in Bilbo's house discussing Smaug, Bofur is seen leaning forward next to Balin with his pipe out of his mouth, then in the next shot he's leaning back against the wall with his pipe in his mouth. (00:27:50)

Continuity mistake: Just after Radagast has a flashback of him seeing the Necromancer, some of the white stuff on his beard disappears briefly in the shot where he inhales the stuff in Gandalf's pipe. (01:15:20)

Casual Person

Continuity mistake: When the company are surrounded by Wargs outside the Hidden Pass, Thorin can be seen holding his sword Orcrist in one hand and an axe in the other; the shot changes and he is then holding his sword with two hands, the shot changes again and he reverts back to the original configuration. (01:20:25)

Continuity mistake: In the scene with the rock giants the dwarfs and Bilbo get completely soaked by the rain. Once they reach the safe rock, you see Bombur land on his back and he is totally dry. (01:48:05)

David Hancock

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Bilbo, now invisible, sees Gandalf and the dwarfs run past the cave and he can't join them because Gollum blocks the way. When Bilbo finally runs past Gollum and kicks him in the face and knocks him down, the very next shot shows Gollum's body lying in the opposite direction, away from the direction Bilbo kicked him. Continuity mistake: At the dinner scene at Bilbo's house, just before Bofur throws the egg at Bombur's mouth, Fili is seen sitting next to Bombur. Yet as Bombur catches the egg, Ori is now sitting where Fili was sitting.

Casual Person

Continuity mistake: Shortly after Bilbo finds the Elvish sword that turns blue in the presence of Orcs and Goblins there's a fight with Orcs at the entrance to the hidden valley. However, the sword doesn't glow blue. In subsequent fights with Goblins and Orcs the sword does glow blue, even when sheathed.

Continuity mistake: As Thorin is picked up by the eagle, the eagle's talons roll him towards the camera. Both of the eagle's feet are in view and you can see all the way down Thorin's body to his boots. Orcrist is nowhere on his body during this initial shot of the pickup. As soon as the shot changes (where the Oakenshield drops free) and both of the eagle's feet come back into view, Orcrist is now on Thorin's body, running over his stomach and left leg. Had it been there before, it would have been visible when the eagle rolled him towards the camera.

Bilbo: Oh, up to but not exceeding one fourteenth total profit if any. Seems fair. Present company shall not be liable for injuries including but not limited to laceration, evisceration... Incineration?
Bofur: Oh, aye. He'll melt the flesh off your bones in the blink of an eye.
Balin: You all right, laddie?
Bilbo: Yeah, I'll be. Feel a bit faint.
Bofur: Think furnace, with wings.
Bilbo: Yeah, I-I-I need air.
Bofur: Flash of light, searing pain, then poof, you're nothing more than a pile of ash.
Bilbo: [Long pause.] No. [Bilbo faints.].

Trivia: The blade that Gandalf presents to the high Elves and Saruman is the same blade that Frodo gets stabbed with in Fellowship of the Ring on Weathertop. Confirmed in the director's commentary. How the blade makes its way back to the witch-king hasn't been revealed.

Question: Where exactly is Bilbo from? In the novels he's mentioned as coming from Hobbiton, Overhill and Underhill, Bag-end and the Shire.

Answer: Hobbiton is the village where Bilbo was born. Overhill is on the northern edge of Hobbiton and Underhill is at the bottom of said hill. Built into the hill itself is Bag End, the Baggins estate. The Shire is the name of the Hobbit lands overall. So, he's from the village of Hobbiton in The Shire, and his home is Bag End, which is in the midst of the hill that forms both Overhill and Underhill.
