Character mistake: When Polly answers the phone and is told of the log drifting in the channel, she immediately yells to Sean and tells him this. However, she does not leave enough time for the caller to be able to tell her all this, she leaves 1-2 seconds before passing it on to Sean.

Jaws 4 (1987)
1 character mistake - chronological order
Directed by: Joseph Sargent
Starring: Michael Caine, Mario Van Peebles, Lorraine Gary, Lance Guest
Factual error: At the end when the shark is attacking the boat and the electronic device is used you can hear the shark roar. Sharks cannot produce this sound since they have no vocal cords.
Michael Brody: I've always wanted to make love to an angry welder. I've dreamed of nothing else since I was a small boy.
Trivia: In the third film Michael Brody did a whole lot of welding and dated a marine biologist. In this film he is studying to be a marine biologist and his wife does a lot of welding.

Answer: We never see Jake "eaten", he is merely shown being dragged underwater by the shark. Off screen, the shark simply let go of Jake and didn't kill him. In a movie full of factual errors and plot holes, this bit is actually somewhat realistic. Sharks typically do not eat humans, but will maul people on occasion and let go, presumably because they don't like the taste. How Jake survives underwater for minutes on end is not addressed. Originally, Jake was meant to be killed by the shark but for whatever reason, it was decided that Jake should survive and make a surprise appearance after the shark has been killed.
