Plot hole: Foster served in the military and even received a Purple Heart as indicated by the plaque in his mother's home. Yet he needs a kid to explain to him how to handle an M72 rocket launcher. A weapon introduced in the 60s and thus well within his time at the military.
Suggested correction: Not everyone in the military knows how to use this particular type of weapon. In fact, probably most don't.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where D-Fens was going to get on the bus, there is a young black woman seen standing at the end of the bench clad in a lavender tank top, and is later seen getting on board. D-fens changes his mind and turns around and walks. She is later seen in MacArthur Park dancing with a small band. (00:32:50 - 00:36:40)
Other mistake: From the front, D-fens' ex-wife's home is shown as being one house left of the beach. When the officers are in the back of the house, there are neighbors living to the right of the house, where the beach should be. (01:30:20 - 01:37:05)
Audio problem: Just before D-Fens shoots up the payphone, that guy tells him that there's other people waiting to use the phone too. After D-Fens says 'that's too bad, because you know what?', you can hear the guy ask 'what?', but his lips don't move. (00:52:19)
Continuity mistake: During the showdown on the pier, a Richard Marx poster over the skull graffiti disappears. (01:38:00 - 01:39:44)
Continuity mistake: When the gangbangers wreck their car after the drive by shooting, the gun changes position on the ground, the gym bag changes position, and some debris is missing between cuts.
Factual error: In the end scene on the pier, Robert Duvall has Michael Douglas at gunpoint. A closeup of the revolver's chambers shows them to be empty of bullets; yet Duvall then shoots Douglas dead.
Continuity mistake: When William is waiting to board the bus, there is a black man in a red shirt standing several feet away. When the shot cuts, the red shirted man is instantly standing right behind Will. (00:32:55)
Plot hole: After the cop is shot, Prendergast heads directly for the pier. There is nothing in the movie that would tell him that Bill Foster would have gone in that direction. (01:31:55 - 01:33:41)
Visible crew/equipment: In the beginning of the movie, during the traffic jam, the camera pans from D-FENS to the car in front of him and then to the right to the car with the Garfield toy stuck to the window. You can see equipment (a statue, some wires and a white screen) in the reflection of the window. (00:01:30)
