The Italian Job

Factual error: In the Mini Cooper subway scene, the cars are first seen outside of the Hollywood/Highland red line station. However, when they jump in front of the metro rail line, it is the blue line they are jumping in front of and not the red line. The only red line station that meets up with the blue line is the 7th Street/Metro station, not the Hollywood/Highland station. (01:26:10 - 01:27:25)

Revealing mistake: In the shots of the Metro tunnels, the "rails" are flush with the concrete surface, as streetcar tracks would be, to form a level surface that automobiles can easily drive on. In a dedicated right-of-way, however, the engineers would not go to this unnecessary trouble and expense; the rails would simply be mounted on the tunnel floor. Also notable is the presence of crossovers, but the absence of any movable switching equipment, rendering them useless.

Visible crew/equipment: When the crew first get the Minis and are testing them out, as Stella gets into the car and the camera pans down you can see in the front passenger window and rear, the reflection of the camera and an older crew member in the back. (00:54:05)

Continuity mistake: When the kid has thrown the ball on the thug kid, you see the thug stumble forward. When it cuts he stumbles again. (00:31:20)

Factual error: When Steve is measuring the position of the safe, 14' 8" is depicted as 14.8 and 8' 5" is shown as 8.5. This is completely wrong. (00:08:50)

Suggested correction: They wrote it that way because they wanted to. They do not have to write it as 8'5." Short forming would be 8.5 since they know what scale they are using to measure with.

Revealing mistake: At the start, Rob and Lyle go under a bridge towards the garbage men and correctly leave a wake behind them in the water. When the shot changes to show the pursuer following them, the water is still and there's no sign of the wake from Rob's boat. (00:15:10)

Continuity mistake: In the first heist we see a quick shot of the garbage men getting into position followed by a shot of John and Charlie in the water moving some of the gold. In the shot of John, the way he holds the current gold bar changes between shots. (00:14:40)

Factual error: Charlie tells Napster it's "13 across, 4 high, 4 deep" as anyone can see that's only the math for one of the three shelves in the same. It would actually be 13 across, 12 high, 4 deep (although at points it looks only 2 deep and other points it looks to be 3) which would mean that there's 624 bricks not 208 and it'd be worth 81 million instead of 27. Funny enough, Napster still returns that it's 208 bricks and 27 mil so it seems that no-one in cast or crew noticed the mathematical mistake.

Continuity mistake: A scene in the junkyard, near the middle of the film, the Ukrainian gang's black Cadillac Seville is shown entering the location. However. In the next shot, the car has suddenly changed into a black Cadillac CTS. (00:50:00)

Visible crew/equipment: When the minis jump in front of the subway you can see a small ramp appear before the blue mini jumps. You then see the blue mini land on boxes.

Continuity mistake: The weather changes between the first two scenes in Venice. The scene in St. Mark's Square is in fog, mist and rain, but in the next scene, supposedly taking place at exactly the same time (with Handsome Rob) there are blue skies.

Jacob La Cour

Continuity mistake: When Rob gets the key off Becky, a camera man's shadow can be seen moving over the bed. This is not Rob's shadow as at the time he isn't moving. (00:43:20)

Continuity mistake: When Wrench first sees Stella, the neck cover on his welder's mask is loose. The camera cuts and it's not tucked behind his head.

Continuity mistake: In the subway, all the Minis get covered in dust and grime. However, while the red and white ones stay fairly dirty, the blue one becomes spotless when he is facing off against Steve's helicopter.

Other mistake: The Minis drive through a storm drain and a huge puddle. However, the cars never leave so much as a mark on the dry surface of the road.

Revealing mistake: At the golf course, tyre marks can be seen from previous takes. They are not from golf buggies as they are the exact width of the tyres and the same distance apart.

Factual error: During the escape at the end of the movie, when the Minis come out of the pipe and drop down into the basin of the LA River they fall nose first into the pavement. However, with approximately 9 million dollars worth of gold in the trunks of the cars, they would be back heavy, not front heavy, and fall more evenly or even back first. It's been suggested that Wrench could have put a ton of weight up front to balance the cars properly, but the amount of gold carried in those special boxes loaded into the back end of the very short wheelbase Minis could not be balanced even by the legendary Wrench without severely re-engineering the vehicle. If that was possible, the handling of the unladen Mini would be woeful, and the chase scene BEFORE the subway gold heist would be impossible. The Minis would have fallen like bricks nose-first onto the subway track when jumping from the platform.

Suggested correction: I have spoken with an expert in vehicle dynamics and physics, and he said that the falling of the vehicles is absolutely correct. He has seen the movie and finds nothing wrong with the scene. The front of the car starts falling first, and therefore will land first. The cars would have to fall a much greater distance for the weight to take over and cause the back of the car to drop and hit first - it would have to have fallen perhaps as much as 25-30 feet. I know it seems counter-intuitive, but in reality it was real as presented.

Sorry, your expert must have been a friend of the stunt coordinator. It was the worst car stunt mistake of all time and why they never balanced the cars and reshot the scene is anybody's guess.

Of course the front end starts to fall first, that's the point of the mistake, it should be backend heavy. If you watch the scene, it's clear there's a ramp at the end of the tube (whether intentionally done by the characters or for stunt purposes). When the cars hit the ramp, they fly up so that the front end is up in the air above the back end. Then the cars fall front end first, fairly quickly, that if even if they fell from higher up, the back end would never fall faster than the front.

Question: How much did Mini Cooper give to the Italian Job for the publicity in the movie? The movie casts a very good light on the car.

Answer: The Mini Cooper for the movie was also made as an electric car for the chase scenes in the tunnel because gas-powered cars were not allowed to be used in the tunnels. I heard that from the director's cut.

Answer: While the exact amount of money is hard to find, the MINIs used in the 2003 movie are a direct homage to the Minis used in the 1960s movie, which is the main reason they are used. MINI (the company owned by BMW, as opposed to the company which owned Mini by Austin and Morris in the 60s) was happy to have the remake use MINI as a direct link to change the perception of it from a "girly" type car, to a more sporty one.
