Visible crew/equipment: The shadow of a boom mike or some other large piece of equipment can be seen moving on the window shade above Marlowe's head as he prepares to leave Arthur Gwynn Geiger's house. (00:24:45)
Continuity mistake: To get his car, Marlowe walks back to Arthur Gwynn Geiger's house after bringing Carmen Sternwood home. No one has touched it but his car has moved closer to the for sale sign on the house across the street from Geiger's, where he parked it before. (00:19:35 - 00:27:20)
Continuity mistake: When she first meets Marlowe, Lauren Bacall's hair is combed between shots as the left side is different in her close ups when she says to Marlowe, "I doubt if even that would help". (00:10:25)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe follows Agnes Lowzier's tip and drives out to Art Huck's garage and he pulls over to the side of the road in front of a sign that says, "Realito 7 miles". At first the sign is in the dark but in the next shot his headlights light it up. (01:33:15)
Continuity mistake: The hostess is standing at the door to Eddie Mars' room. In the next shot as Marlowe walks in she's leaning against the door frame. (01:07:50)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe sits in front of The Randall Arms Apartments as Lauren Bacall drives up and parks across the street near his car. He tries to hide his face by putting his hand in front of his mouth and in the first shot the top of his hand is covering his mouth but in the next shot the palm of his hand is covering his mouth. Continuity mistake: After Carmen walks out of Geiger's house Eddie Mars' handkerchief is tucked into his jacket pocket with only two small corners sticking out. In the next shot the handkerchief has been rearranged and is sticking out one inch higher. (00:43:25)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe gets into a cab in front of Geiger's store and sits on the right of the backseat behind the driver. In the next shot he's sitting on the left side of the backseat talking to her. (00:38:50)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe turns the page of Arthur Gwynn Geiger's diary and two pages on the left are sticking up. In the next shot all the pages are flattened out. (00:24:20)
Continuity mistake: After Marlowe leaves Geiger's bookstore he walks across the street to the Acme Book Shop and a man is walking in just before him. In the next shot two women are walking out. (00:15:20)
Continuity mistake: The top of the seltzer bottle on the liquor tray is facing away from Marlowe than in the next shot as he says, "but then she tried to sit in my lap when I was standing up" it's now facing towards him. (00:07:20)

Visible crew/equipment: When Lauren Bacall first meets Marlowe as he walks into the room, there's a picture above the fireplace and you can see equipment and crew member's reflections moving in it. (00:10:00)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe goes to get his gun and opens the driver's side door of his car and there is no vent window. In the next shot as he closes his car door, a vent window now appears. (01:41:45)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe sits in his apartment and tries to figure out the code in Geiger's notebook. On his desk the note pad next to his ash tray disappears when Inspector Bernie Ohls knocks at the door at two in the morning. (00:29:25)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe looks at Arthur Gwynn Geiger's diary and his right thumb is covering the page he's reading. In the next shot his hand is moved to the right and not covering the page anymore. (00:24:15)
