Other mistake: Marlowe fires several shots at Art Huck and Lash Canino but if you look at the chamber when he takes the gun out from under the dashboard, there are no bullets in it. (01:41:45)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe sits in front of Joe Brody's apartment building, The Randall Arms. Later as he follows the gunman that shot Brody we see it from inside the car and the registration stickers are different. (00:47:40 - 00:57:20)
Continuity mistake: After driving Lauren Bacall home from Eddie Mars' place Marlowe walks into his apartment and we see the number 206 on the door. In the next shot from inside we see another door that doesn't have 206 on it. (01:17:05)
Continuity mistake: The front door of the Sternwood's is in the first shot of the movie as Marlowe rings the door bell. The front of the door has just one indentation near the knocker, later we see the front door again as Marlowe brings Carmen home and now it has two indentations. (00:01:15 - 00:25:15)
Continuity mistake: In Art Huck's living room, after Pat Clark throws water into his face, we see the chair at Marlowe's feet. No one goes near it, but later in the scene it moves 45 degrees to the right and is facing Marlowe (1945 Version on DVD). (01:41:30)
Continuity mistake: In Art Huck's living room, Marlowe says to Lauren Bacall, "He'll beat my teeth out then kick me in my stomach for mumbling". The rope and knot tied around his chest change between shots (1945 Version on DVD). (01:42:00)
Continuity mistake: When Marlowe walks over to the bar to get another drink the napkin on the liquor tray has been moved and is draped over the side of the tray differently even though no one went near it. (00:06:15)
Continuity mistake: When Art Huck and Lash Canino get out of his car there are three stickers on the windshield. Marlowe and Lauren Bacall take this car but in the close-up of them driving there are only two stickers on the window. (01:41:30 - 01:46:15)
Continuity mistake: Earlier in the movie at Geiger's house, Marlowe calls Chief Insp. Bernie Ohls of the District Attorney's Office and the six digits of Bernie's phone number are 122-145. At the very end of the movie he's with Lauren Bacall at Geiger's house and again calls Bernie Ohls. This time he dials the same phone number at the DA's office but leaves off one digit 12-145 and the call still goes through. (00:59:55 - 01:52:10)
Visible crew/equipment: Marlowe, Joe Brody and Agnes sit talking in Joe's apartment, Carol Lundgren rings the buzzer and Joe Brody answers the door. A small explosive charge is packed in an indentation on Joe Brody's door before the spot is blown out by Lundgren's shot. The same indentation can be seen again a few moments later as a small explosive is detonated when Lundgren shoots at Marlowe in the lobby of the building. (00:56:30)
Continuity mistake: When they meet up at Geiger's house at the end of the movie Eddie Mars says to Marlowe, "What are you gonna do about it?" as he leans back onto the couch. In the next shot he's sitting straight up facing him. (01:50:45)
Continuity mistake: When we first see Harry Jones' body lying on the floor his shoulder is even with the split in the two cushions on the left of the couch. In the next shot we see him again lying there and his dead body has moved six inches to the right in relation to the cushions on the couch. (01:32:25)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe says to Bernie Ohls at the District Attorney's Office, "you, come up to 7244 Laverne Terrace". He's calling from Arthur Gwynn Geiger's house and we just saw the number on the mailbox when he came in and it's 460 Laverne Terrace. (00:58:25 - 01:00:30)
Continuity mistake: The papers Marlowe is holding in the close-up are different than the pile of papers that Gen. Sternwood handed him. In the close-up all the papers are flat but in the long shot one is folded. (00:06:50)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe drives Lauren Bacall home from Eddie Mars place and after he kisses her she wraps the strap of her pocketbook around the index finger of her left hand. In the next shot it's wrapped around the thumb of her left hand. (01:16:30)
Continuity mistake: When Eddie Mars' pours Marlowe a drink there's a lamp shining on the left of the liquor cabinet. The next time we see this spot the lamp has been moved as the shadows on the liquor cabinet are falling in the opposite direction. (01:09:15)
Continuity mistake: As Lauren Bacall walks out of Marlowe's office the sunlight in the waiting room is shining against the right wall. When she was sitting in the waiting room as Marlowe walked in a few moments ago, the sun was shining against the left wall. (00:37:40)
Continuity mistake: After Marlowe plops Carmen Sternwood onto her bed the lamp (on the left) moves over about two feet to the left in the next shot. (00:25:45)
Continuity mistake: Lauren Bacall walks into a restaurant, and sees Marlowe at the bar with his head tilted back as he finishes his drink, and says, "Hello". The guy to the right of Marlowe is looking at the bartender but in the next shot his head has turned ninety degrees as he's now talking to his friend. (01:00:10)
Other mistake: Marlowe calls Bernie Ohls at the District Attorney's Office who says to him, "That would come under the heading of police business". The close captioning is wrong here and just says "that's police business". (01:00:20)
