Genres: Comedy
Sid Boggle (played by Sid James) and Bernie Lugg (played by Bernard Bresslaw) plan to take their girlfriends, Joan Fussey (played by Joan Sims) and Anthea Meeks (played by Dilys Laye), on a camping trip to Paradise Campsite. However, unbeknownst to them, their girlfriends are hoping for a glamorous holiday in the south of France.
Meanwhile, Mr. Fiddler (played by Kenneth Williams) and his overbearing sister, Miss Haggard (played by Hattie Jacques), arrive at the campsite with their brand-new car and tent. Sid and Bernie set up their modest tent next to the Fiddler siblings, while also catching sight of their attractive neighbors, the Babs (played by Barbara Windsor) and her friend, Bev (played by Valerie Leon).
The campsite is run by Mr. And Mrs. Potter (played by Charles Hawtrey and Joan Hickson). Mr. Potter is an eccentric, overly helpful campsite manager, constantly interfering with the campers' activities. As the campers settle in, a nearby nudist campsite becomes visible, leading to numerous comedic situations.
Sid tries to woo Babs and impress her with his non-existent tennis skills, but ends up causing chaos on the court. Bernie, on the other hand, falls asleep and ends up in the nudist camp, much to his surprise. Mrs. Fussey is constantly on a diet and takes pills to keep her weight in check, while Mrs. Fiddler sneaks off to attend fitness classes run by a hunky instructor named Peter Potter (played by Peter Butterworth).
During a stormy night, everyone's tents collapse except for Bernie's, which he had borrowed from his army unit. His tent becomes the shelter for all the campers, leading to awkward and humorous situations as they try to fit and find privacy in the small space.
As tensions rise, Sid hatches a plan to book a luxury holiday in the south of France for Joan. In doing so, he impersonates Mr. Fiddler over the phone and manages to secure the booking. However, the real Mr. Fiddler discovers the deception and decides to take the holiday in their place.
On the day of departure, the campers get ready to leave, but their plans are disrupted when the campsite sign is rearranged by pranksters, leading all the cars in the wrong direction. Chaos ensues as cars collide and people scramble to figure out the correct way. In all the confusion, Bev reveals a secret that she is actually a man, shocking everyone.
In the end, the campers manage to arrive at the south of France, albeit in a disheveled state. Sid, Bernie, Joan, and Anthea enjoy a glamorous holiday, while Mr. And Mrs. Fiddler are left to cope with the camping trip they initially despised.
Mr. Short: Miss Dobbin, what's the meaning of this?
Miss Dobbin: I'm sorry sir but the gentlemen kept touching things.
Charlie Muggins: Yes she was showing me how to stick the pole up.
Trivia: As mentioned in the 'mistakes' section, Barbara Windor's bra was snatched from her with the aid of a fishing line. What is not so widely known, however, is the shot that made it into "Carry On Camping" was, in fact the second take of that shot. On the first take of getting Ms. Windsor's bra to fly though the air, the bra did NOT come off - Barbara Windsor was pulled and landed face down in the mud.
