The Blues Brothers mistake picture

Continuity mistake: In the deleted scene where Elwood goes into the manager's office to quit, right before he walks in the door he sets his briefcase down, it is slightly crooked and in the center of the floor. When he goes to leave it is sitting straight and further to the left. (00:42:45)

Character mistake: When Elwood tells his boss he is going to quit, his boss tells him he will call payroll and have them get his severance pay ready. While employees who resign do have final pay prepared (pro-rated pay, vacation pay, time owed in lieu, etc.) it would never be classified as "severance pay" if the employee resigned on their own accord. Severance pay is classified for employees who are terminated without cause, meaning no fault of their own. (00:43:10)

Suggested correction: This isn't entirely accurate, only what is most common. First, severance pay is not required by law, nor is paying for accrued PTO, so it's at the discretion of employers who can offer it to whomever they wish. An employer may offer a severance package for termination (with or without cause), retirement, or resignation. Often a severance package comes with certain conditions, such as the employee won't seek unemployment or work for a competitor, or may simply be money paid for PTOs.

Suggested correction: This never happened in the movie, Elwood didn't have a job.

Continuity mistake: When the Blues Brothers park outside Mrs. Tarantino's house, the car's front wheels are almost level with the path to her front door. When they start the car to drive off a bit later, it is parked further back with its front bumper level with the path. (00:44:06)

Continuity mistake: In Chez Paul's restaurant, when Elwood and Jake first sit down, the waiter in the top right of the wide shot walks around a seated man in a dark suit; four seconds later, in a closer shot of them putting their napkins on, the waiter walks round the man again. (00:50:37)

Continuity mistake: After we've heard why it's so great to be an Illinois Nazi, there's a wide shot of Jake and Elwood's car in a queue, and a policeman walks past the driver's door. In the next shot, the cop hasn't yet walked past the door, and instead of doing so, he stops when the Blues Brothers ask what's going on. (00:56:14)

The Blues Brothers mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When the Blues Brothers go to persuade Matt and "Blue" Lou to rejoin the band, and they have just ordered their signature meals from Aretha Franklin, she goes to Matt in the kitchen to moan. Matt is cooking two burgers of some kind, but in a shot of Aretha 30 seconds or so later (when Matt says not to talk that way around his old lady), the burgers have moved and multiplied. (01:00:53)

Continuity mistake: When the three ladies of the Soul Food Chorus get up to sing "Think" with Aretha Frankin, their food is sitting on the counter; ten seconds later in a wide shot, it has gone. (This is undoubtedly so that "Blue" Lou can do his thing on the counter.) When the ladies sit down again and get a nasty look from Aretha after Matt and Lou have left, their food is back again. (01:02:50)

Audio problem: In the soul restaurant, when the Aretha Franklin song "Think" is about to end, watch the mouth of the fat lady behind her and you will see that her lips don't match her song. (01:05:35)

Factual error: As part of her quest to kill John Belushi, Carrie Fisher shoots at the brothers with a flamethrower. She is earlier seen reading the manual for the "M-79 Flamethrower." The M-79 is a grenade launcher - the one Schwarzengger carries in "Terminator 2." (01:07:00)

Audio problem: When the band is playing at Ray's music store, Murph is playing a tambourine totally out of synch with the music. (01:09:55)

Continuity mistake: At Bob's Country Bunker, Jake takes one of the beers and drinks it. When he grabs another beer, there are the same number of beers there were before (without subtracting the beer he took before). (01:17:25)

Continuity mistake: During the scene at Bob's Country Bunker, when the band is playing Rawhide, a bar patron starts dancing on top of a table with a beer in his hand. In the background of the second shot of him, John Belushi is on the stage and has just picked up the bullwhip. In the next camera cut Belushi walks to the end of the stage and picks up the whip again. (01:17:50)

Other mistake: After the state troopers collide with Bob's pickup truck, both vehicles crash into a fire hydrant improbably located alongside a deserted country highway. (01:29:45)

Other mistake: There is an Ohio flag flying outside the hotel where they're going to play their big gig. (01:33:22)

Suggested correction: This isn't a mistake. The Ohio flag is one of at least 5 flags flown in a row, presumably the others being state flags. And this shot was filmed in Illinois, not Ohio. It's not uncommon for a place to fly multiple flags.

Bishop73

Factual error: The Palace Hotel that The Blues Brothers do their big show in is supposed to be 106 miles up north. That would put it in Wisconsin. The flags that fly outside the hall are the Ohio state flag. (01:44:15)

Continuity mistake: During the highway car chase, when the police cars are shown going over the ledge and down the embankment, car number 73 goes over the ledge twice. (01:45:45)

mightymick

Other mistake: When Elwood breaks the window of the ladies room (using his hat and fist) and they both climb in, it's not until he says "'Scuse us" that anyone starts screaming, even though some women are right near the window. (01:47:18)

Continuity mistake: When police cars chase the Blues Brothers down Lower Wacker Drive, a number of vehicles parked on Upper Wacker Drive disappear between shots. (01:48:20)

mightymick

Continuity mistake: When the Nazis are parked in the alley and see the Blues Brothers pass, their car begins to move. In the next close-up shot of the Nazi leader, their car is at a stop. (01:50:05)

Police Dispatcher: Use of unnecessary violence in the apprehension of the Blues Brothers HAS been approved.

Trivia: This movie set a long-standing Guinness World Record for the largest number of automobiles ever destroyed in a movie, 104, including 60 refurbished and reinforced police cars wrecked (most beyond repair) in the various chase scenes. This record held until the belated sequel, "Blues Brothers 2000," (1998) deliberately set the new record by wrecking one additional automobile for a total of 105.

Suggested correction: It possibly depends on what one counts as "destroyed." Sources suggest there were 104 cars destroyed in BB, with 105 in BB2000. The record has been broken several times since and now stands at 532. It'd be great to see evidence of the numbers for verification. whatculture.com/film/20-things-you-didn't-know-about-the-blues-brothers?page=12 www.startrescue.co.uk/news/top-10/the-10-films-that-destroyed-the-most-cars.

The trivia entry is mostly correct and doesn't need a correction. Just a word change to make it accurate. "Blues Brothers" (1980) did hold the record. 60 police cars were wrecked, but so were an additional 43 cars for a total of 103. "Blues Brothers 2000" beat their own record by 1 car. It seems person who made the entry found on the internet that "Blues Brothers" wrecked 60 cop cars and thought that was the record and assumed 61 was the new record.

More trivia for The Blues Brothers

Question: There is a Blues Brothers song, sang by Elwood and Jake themselves, "I'm a Sole Man". However, this song does not appear in the film, but is often related to their band. Was the song supposed to be in the movie? Is it a deleted scene? If it is, can someone tell me when it was supposed to appear?

Answer: It's called "Soul Man". The Blues Brothers exist as an entity seperate to the film - they originated as a band performing on Saturday Night Live. The band continued, releasing an album in 1978, entitled "Briefcase Full Of Blues", which contained the track Soul Man, as well as many others. This was followed by the film two years later, the soundtrack of which formed the band's second album. None of the tracks from their first album appear in the film - a third album followed shortly after the film, again containing non-film tracks.
