Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Continuity mistake: When Professor McGonnagall is talking to the children before their sorting, you can tell when the camera is on her that the lighting is candle-like (note the flicker). When the camera cuts to the children, there is no flicker (check out Hermione). (00:39:50)

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone mistake picture

Continuity mistake: While the first years are waiting at the top of the stairs just before being lead into the Great Hall for the first time, Ron's robes switch from being fully opened, to closed, then back again. (00:40:00)

Continuity mistake: When Malfoy first talks, the window behind him is bright blue. He says "it's true then, what they are saying on the train, Harry Potter has come to Hogwarts." Everyone says "Harry Potter" and when it cuts back to Malfoy, the window is much much darker. Both a mistake in terms of continuity between windows, and also a mistake because we'd seen everyone turn up in total darkness earlier, so the window shouldn't have been lit in the first place. (00:40:30)

Continuity mistake: Malfoy has one tooth that is notably crooked. If you watch carefully, you'll see that it changes sides throughout the film. (00:40:55 - 01:43:50)

Continuity mistake: In the scene where the pupils are waiting on the stairs before being sorted into their houses, Malfoy speaks to Harry and is clearly at the top of the stairs. However as the pupils go into the dining room, Malfoy is nowhere to be seen in at least the first 30 pupils. (00:41:15)

Suggested correction: That is because McGonnigal taps him on the shoulder, and he walks off down the steps to back with Crabbe and Goyle.

Continuity mistake: In the scene where the new students are walking to their rooms, there seems to be a whole lot more new students then there was in the sorting hat ceremony. (00:41:40 - 00:48:05)

Continuity mistake: When the first years are first led into the Great Hall, in the shot facing the teacher's table, the twins sit to Wood's left at the end of Gryffindor's table. However, in the next shot facing the first years, the twins sit on Wood's right. (00:41:55)

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone mistake picture

Continuity mistake: At the start of term feast, after Harry is sorted into Gryffindor, he sits down on the right side of the table next to Ron. When the feast appears, Harry is on the other side of the table, next to Hermione. (00:46:05)

Suggested correction: This is not a mistake. In the first shot, Harry was just sorted into Gryffindor and there were still quite a few students waiting to be sorted. By the time of the second shot, all the students were sorted and the feast started. Therefore, at least a few minutes have passed and Harry had plenty of time to switch sides of the table. Doesn't make much sense why he did that, I agree, but still plenty of time to do it.

I agree, but it's not about how there's plenty of time to do it. Like you said before, there's no reason for Harry to change position. Therefore, it counts as a mistake.

Other mistake: While Harry and his classmates are on their way up to Gryffindor Tower right after the Sorting, Neville reacts with astonishment to a portrait moving. However, we learn in later films that Neville was raised in a magical household (by his grandmother), so he should have been completely accustomed to seeing pictures move. (00:46:30)

Suggested correction: Not every magic household has moving pictures in the house.

No, but being raised in the magical world he will have come across moving portraits. A good example (tho not explained until book 5) is at St Mungo's. He visits his parents regularly. The hospital has portraits there that would move. Thus seeing the one move at Hogwarts shouldn't have startled him.

Ssiscool

I am now doubting it's Neville who is saying it. Can't be sure it's his voice. It can also be he is mentioning they are portraits, not photographs that are moving. Maybe moving paintings are rarer.

It could be Dean Thomas. He's a muggleborn. And his first knowledge was when he had a letter, same as Harry.

Continuity mistake: When Percy leads the group of first years back to the Gryffindor dormitories for the first time, at the stairs he says, "Keep up please and follow me. Quickly now, come on." In this wide shot Harry and Ron run up the stairs first and Hermione is at least six people behind them. Yet, in the next close-up she is with them at the front, right behind Percy. (00:48:25)

Super Grover

Continuity mistake: When we see Ron and Harry running into the transfiguration class, Malfoy and Crabbe can be seen working. When it shows a close-up of Malfoy, both Malfoy and Crabbe have changed body position. (00:48:30)

Continuity mistake: When Snape enters the classroom during the first Potions class, there is a lit candle and an hourglass on the desk directly behind him. But in the following shots the candle and hourglass change positions and move farther away. (00:49:20)

Continuity mistake: When the three children get past Fluffy because the harp is playing, as Fluffy wakes he dribbles on Ron's shoulder. However, when they fall down into the Devil's Snare, his shirt is completely dry. (00:51:16)

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When Harry is in the potions class he is caught writing notes down, we see his neat writing in close up ... but when the camera angle changes we can see that the writing has changed in size to very large letters and quite messy writing. (00:52:10)

Factual error: The first film takes place from 1991-1992 (the seventh film shows James and Lily's grave, with the correct dates to have the film take place in 1991), however when Harry asks to borrow Ron's Daily Prophet during the first mail delivery, the date at the top reads 2001. (00:52:30)

Audio problem: When Hedwig flies from Harry's arm, or owls deliver mail, you hear the sound of wingbeats. However, owl's feathers are specially adapted to allow for completely silent flight. See here for an explanation. http://www.owlpages.com/articles.php?section=Owl+Physiology&title=Feathers. (00:53:45)

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone mistake picture

Continuity mistake: After Seamus' disaster with the rum spell, the mail arrives. Ron catches his mail, then holds the Daily Prophet in his right hand and the letters in his left. Yet in the next close-up he holds the Daily Prophet in his left hand and the letters in his right. (00:54:05)

Super Grover

Revealing mistake: When the mail comes, Ron receives the Daily Prophet and Harry asks, "Can I borrow this?" As Harry asks to borrow the newspaper, the Malfoy body double is plainly visible over Ron's left shoulder. (00:54:10)

Dumbledore: It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends.

Trivia: When Neville receives a Remembrall from his grandmother, it glows red to inform him that he forgot something. Neville says that he can't remember what he forgot. If you look closely, Neville is one of very few students not wearing his robe. He most likely forgot to put his robe on.

Question: I get that the DADA role is cursed because of Voldemort being denied the role when he applied for it at Hogwarts, but why does Dumbledore not let Snape take the role like he's wanted to every year? I thought Snape was a double agent (he spies on the Death Eaters and Voldemort for Dumbledore, and he pretends to be on Voldemort's side too), so unless Voldemort decides that he wants to get rid of him for being in the role, he's okay to take it on provided he's given it, and yet every year, Dumbledore turns down his application. Is it because Snape's too involved in Voldemort's side of things or some other reason? I hope I explained it well.

Heather Benton

Chosen answer: There are several reasons. First, the position is cursed, so there is little reason to give Snape the job when he will not last any longer than all the previous instructors. If Snape did become the DADA instructor, something could happen to him that could result in his being harmed, having to leave Hogwarts, or be otherwise incapacitated in some way; that would render him useless to Dumbledore as a double agent. Also, Dumbledore trusts Snape, but putting him in an environment where he is teaching about dark magic on a daily basis would be too tempting and emotionally compromising to someone who had been so easily seduced by the dark side. He could possibly relapse. It would be like having a recovering alcoholic work as a bartender. Of course, he does eventually become the DADA instructor, and lasted no longer than his predecessors.

In the movies it is never mentioned that DADA role was cursed by Voldemort.

This is true; though it doesn't say it's not either. With trying to fit 7 long books and years worth of pages of HP information in 2 and a half hours; as long as the movie doesn't say it's not cursed, with our knowledge, there is no problem with reporting that it is. Even directors of non-book movies do this all the time; leave background information out that helps explain things they just didn't have time so they explained it behind the scenes.
