The Wizard of Oz

Continuity mistake: As Toto escapes from the Wicked Witch there's a mortar and pestle to the left of the hourglass. In a close-up Dorothy looks at the hourglass after the Wicked Witch turns it over and we see the pestle has been moved to the other side of the mortar. There will be no confusion about this if you look at the direction of the shadow cast by the hour glass. (01:18:20)

Audio problem: When Toto escapes from the witch's castle and runs off to the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Lion to lead them to rescue Dorothy, he can be heard barking. As he is running up to the three, he is still barking, but his mouth is quite still and his tongue is hanging out. (01:19:30)

Continuity mistake: When Toto escapes, he runs up to the three putting the Scarecrow back together and the Tin Man has nothing in his left hand. In the next shot the ax appears in his hand. (01:19:40)

Revealing mistake: When the Lion is pulling up the Tin Man with his tail on the way to the castle, you can see a square block inside the Lion's costume to hold the tail on. (01:20:00)

Continuity mistake: The clouds behind the side of the mountain don't move an inch in the time it takes Toto to run and get help and return to the same spot. (01:20:00)

????

Continuity mistake: The Tin Man holds on to the Lion's tail as he reaches the top of the mountain. In the next shot he says, "I hope my strength holds out" and he's back on the side of the mountain. (01:20:00)

????

Other mistake: A shiny snap on the Lion's left foot can be seen gleaming in the stage lights as he says, "I hope my strength holds out" on the side of the mountain. (01:20:05)

????

Revealing mistake: As the Tin Man holds on to the Lion's tail, the seam in the painted backdrop behind them is very visible going from left to right across the entire sky. (01:20:05)

????

Other mistake: The Witch's castle is shown twice, the first time is in the beginning of the scene when Dorothy is held in her room, and the second time is when Toto brings the three back to rescue her. Each time the painting is almost exact, even down to the lights in the windows of the castle. The only thing that changes is the walk way up to the castle, which is entirely different each time. (01:20:10)

????

Audio problem: As the three look down at the entrance to the Wicked Witch's castle the guards in the back are playing drums that are not in synch with what we're hearing on the soundtrack. (01:20:45)

Continuity mistake: When trying to escape the Witch's castle, the big doors close, and the gang stands in a line and starts banging on the doors. Between shots, Dorothy and the Tin Man switch sides. (01:21:15)

Hamster

Continuity mistake: Just before getting crushed by the candle chandelier, the position the Witch's Guards are standing changes between shots. In one shot they're all standing apart, but in the very next shot, they all huddled together in one big group. (01:21:15)

Hamster

Continuity mistake: At the witch's castle, the witch throws a sand timer to the floor from a banister, and it smashes in front of a large group of her guards. But in the next shot, when the candle chandelier lands on all the guards, you can see that the smashed timer has disappeared. (01:21:20)

Hamster

Continuity mistake: In the shot from behind them, the three look down at the entrance to the Wicked Witch's castle and the Scarecrow picks Toto up in his arms. In the next shot Toto is on a rock barking. (01:21:40)

Continuity mistake: When Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion are marching into the Wicked Witch's castle after taking the guards' uniforms, all three of them are shown holding the same types of spears as the guards, so when they go rescue Dorothy out of the locked room and Tin Man chops through the door with his axe, where did the axe come from? Suggested correction: I'm with Bishop73 on this one. The Tin Man has his axe with him when they put on the guards' uniforms, and when they get to the room that Dorothy is in, he uses his axe to break the doors, so it's plausible to believe that he tucked the axe in his uniform, then took it out to rescue Dorothy.

Suggested correction: I'm 63 years old and still watch The Wizard of Oz. If I remember correctly, the axe was taken off a nearby wall.

There is no scene of him taking the axe off the wall, nor is there any axe seen on any of the walls. Plus, it's the same axe he had the whole time. But the 3 also take off their coats/disguises while the camera is on Dorothy and it's possible he had the axe tucked away in the coat.

Bishop73

In the books, the Tin Man always has his axe and he uses it often. Perhaps it is the same in the movie.

Continuity mistake: At the Witch's door the Tin Man is not the wearing his metal suit underneath the guards clothing. Look at his waist. (01:23:30)

????

Continuity mistake: When the Tin Man starts chopping the Witch's door his axe has marks all over it. Several shots later he raises it again to chop down another door and it's as new as the day he bought it. (01:23:35)

The Wizard of Oz mistake picture

Continuity mistake: The Tin Man starts chopping the Witch's door and it's not the same one we just saw three shots before. The wood is a different color and the dark metal brace has been polished in the close-up. (01:23:40)

The Wizard of Oz mistake picture

Continuity mistake: At first the Tin Man starts chopping the top part of the Witch's door with his ax and two shots later he's chopping about two feet lower, near the handle. If you look closely when he eventually gets the door open, the top part has not been touched. (01:23:40)

????

Revealing mistake: As the Tin Man busts down the Witch's door with his ax if you look closely you'll see a slight edit in the film right before he takes his last swing. What they did was unlock the door before the last swing so it would open. You can see the dead bolt retracted as the door swings open. (01:23:50)

Wicked Witch: Ohhh... You cursed brat! Look what you've DONE! I'm melting! Melting! Oh... What a world, what a world! Who would have thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness?!

Question: It is implied strongly in this movie that water makes witches melt, and this is spoofed in other media. I've only ever seen this referenced to wicked witches. Does water make good witches, such as Glinda, melt too?

Answer: In all likelihood, probably not. Water is often depicted and represents purity, and cleansing. It flows smoothly, is beautiful, clear, and responsible for life on Earth. Everything the Wicked Witch is not. Where as the good Witch is pure and of a true heart. So it makes sense that something so evil and impure as the evil witch would be effected by the purest substance there is, yet not harm the good witch because she is good.

Quantom X

Answer: In the original book, water caused the wicked witches to melt away because they were so old and shriveled that all the fluid in their bodies had long since dried away. Meanwhile, the film Oz: The Great and Powerful instead implies that the Wicked Witch of the West is weak against water due to being a fire-elemental witch, which could also be the case for this incarnation, meaning it wouldn't apply to other witches like Glinda (whose element in both films appears to be ice) or even the Wicked Witch of the East (whose powers are never shown in this film, but were electricity-based in Oz the Great and Powerful).
