Trivia: In the opening scene where Mia is introduced and waves to the crowd from atop a staircase, (wearing a big red dress) she accidentally flings a bracelet off her wrist, where a footman catches it. Trivia: Due to the political situation in Iraq, the location for scale shots was moved from Morocco to Mexico, an ideal alternate choice with its broad beach. However, the rushed decision presented some obstacles. Coastal Mexico is an endangered turtle habitat, so to be granted permission to set up the Greek encampment and build boats on the large stretch of beach, the film crew implemented their own turtle incubation nursery, releasing a multitude of turtles while on location in Mexico. They also did not have an accurate idea of the physical conditions of that particular beach - it was unstable and 100 feet of beach washed away overnight, leaving Greek ships teetering precariously on the edge of the bank with the missing sand.
Trivia: In the scene where Bridget and Shazzer are on the plane to Thailand, where Shazzer first meets Jed, both she and Jed are reading "The Beach" by Alex Garland, a book about young travellers in Thailand. One of the main characters in the book is also called 'Jed' and many of the scenes featured in the film are mentioned in this book (such as drug trafficking, transsexual Thai prostitutes, etc).
Trivia: There is a carnival scene in the movie which actually took place in Times Square in New York. The cast and crew had to run around after it to get a perfect shot.
Trivia: This film was supposed to be Steve Coogan's ticket to Hollywood stardom, but it was not to be. The film tanked at the box office, losing almost US$80,000,000. This is the biggest loss by any independent film ever, and it bankrupted its producers.

Trivia: Much of the scene with Largeman and the doctor in his office was ad libbed by Ron Leibman. Liebman made up patting Braff on the knee and saying "Hey, you're alive" on the spot, and Braff actually did jump from it. He also did some research by calling other doctors, and threw in the line about taking off his shoes and scratching his feet at the very last moment, something doctors actually do.
Trivia: The directors had Sam wear a lot of blue throughout the movie to standout and show she stood apart from everyone else. They tried to get all the other actors and extras to wear as little blue as possible. If you pay attention, Sam is often wearing blue and all the teenagers in the background wear jeans a lot less than you would probably see at a high school.

Trivia: The mysterious new leader of the flying daggers never actually appears because that role was intended for actress/ singer Anita Mui, who resigned the (impending) filming due to ill health two weeks before dying of cancer. Out of respect Zhang Yimou didn't replace her with another actress and the film is dedicated to her memory.
