Suggested correction: Many people buy another toothbrush to take on trips and since they were supposed to be going away, they probably decided to use them at home, as if this was their trip.

The whole point of the mistake is they say they have always shared a toothbrush. So why would they use separate on a trip?

Suggested correction: Depending on the location settings on his laptop, they could be giving a false reading. My laptop shows I'm in Cardiff Wales while in fact I'm nowhere near.

Ssiscool

The show was actually filmed on a film set in Los Angeles which is probably why the laptop says Los Angeles as the current location. This most probably slipped past the editing crew.

Suggested correction: Marshall came up with the rule because of Lily and Robin. Before they met, in the era when Ted and Marshall had road trips, they would've had food and drinks.

Nope, the no food or drinks rule is because his brothers made him get 12 hot cups of coffee without lids and drive with them naked, and he got burnt. That was when he got the car, before he met Ted.

It is possible that they stopped and got beef jerky and drinks to eat outside the car. Just a possibility.

They're shown drinking in the car.

Arrivederci, Fiero - S2-E17

Continuity mistake: In this episode we learn that Barney doesn't know how to drive. But throughout the whole series there are reference that he actually does, such as: In 'Come On' (22nd episode 1st season) : Penelope says to Barney: "We had sex twice in your car." In 'Moving Day' (18th episode 2nd season) : Barney drives away with Ted's rental van. In 'The Bracket' (14th episode 3rd season) : Barney stole Holly's SUV as they were camping.

Suggested correction: This has been corrected before. Barney does not know how to drive at the time of the subway strike in 2005, but does learn how to drive at some point shortly after that. And it's not until Moving Day (the very episode after this) that we see Barney driving. He does not have to drive in Come On, he just has to own a car.

Bagpipes - S5-E6

Character mistake: Marshall's whole career focus is saving the environment, so it's a poorly written character choice that he buys plastic glasses to avoid a dish-washing feud, boasting that they can just throw them away. (00:20:10)

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: Alot of stuff can be recycled. He would simply recycle the used plastic.

Ssiscool

You can recycle the plastic but you have to wash it first, defeating all the purpose of buying it in the first place.

Zip, Zip, Zip - S1-E14

Continuity mistake: When Robin leaves to get Battleship, Barney thinks they're going to have sex, whips his belt off, and throws it on the floor. When Robin returns, he's neatly folding his pants and draping them over a chair, and his belt is still threaded through the loops. (00:16:20)

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: He could have easily done that himself so it was easier to put back on afterwards.

This correction is too much of a stretch. It would make no sense for him to take off the belt and throw it to the ground in the first place. He was alone at that point, so he wasn't doing it to impress anyone and he's been in this position before.

Bishop73

It would be completely illogical to take your belt out from your trouser loops, then put it back in the loops just to fold your trousers up.

Sandcastles in the Sand - S3-E16

Continuity mistake: When Lily goes to the bar with her friend Michelle, Barney says "I want her around all the time." It then cuts from Barney to Lily's slightly shocked looking face, obviously from a previous cut/scene change, sitting at the table with them - she should still be walking to the bar with Michelle.

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: Those were different days. Robin agrees to watch Simon's practice before we see Michelle the first time, then the scene cuts to Robin watching the band practice, then the news feed and then the next scene with Michelle. All the character's clothes changed indicating a different time.

Suggested correction: Doesn't mean Lily can't go over and visit for a while. My mother is allergic to cats. She can visit her cat-owning friends for a while, though she would never stay overnight. Pet allergies can be pretty controllable, as long as you're not constantly in contact with the animal.

Suggested correction: This is a character mistake at best, and quite a common one. Students constantly forget their textbooks, homework, notes, supplies etc.

jshy7979

It should be noted that the plot hole isn't talking about "students." This isn't about forgetting textbooks, supplies, or homework. Barney is trying to be a better boyfriend to Robin and wants to learn Ted's secrets since Ted had dated Robin. If Barney has been writing everything down before, the mistake is pointing out why isn't he writing it down this time, except to allow the writers to have Lily and Robin find the notebook and the class.

Where Were We? - S2-E1

Other mistake: When Ted and Robin borrow Marshall's Fiero and are sitting in the car talking as Ted drives, you can hear the beat of a song playing in the car that is not the Proclaimers' I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles), which in many future episodes is referenced as the only song that can be played in that car due to the tape being stuck in the tape player. First Time In New York - S2-E12

Continuity mistake: At the airport, Lily and Robin are talking off to the side away from others. During the scene, the cameras shoot from in front of the two actors and from behind Lily. From the frontal view, Lily's two headbands are white and gold-jeweled. The white headband is closest to her forehead. When the camera shot switches from front to behind, the headbands are switched on her head. The gold one is now closest to her forehead and the white one is behind.

Paria.

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: If you look closely, you can see that the headband is actually symmetrical, so the black strap is on top and in the middle of a larger white headband and never changes. (camera angle makes it often seem both from the front as from the back as if there is no white part behind the black).

Pilot - S1-E1

Other mistake: At the beginning of the series, Ted starts telling the story of how he met the mother of their children. When he starts describing how he met Robin, he doesn't reveal that it was not their mother until the end of the pilot. But children should have realised it wasn't their mother when Robin said she was a journalist and worked as a TV presenter. The kids knew their mom wasn't a journalist, so they shouldn't have been surprised at the end of the episode when Ted said "this is how I met your aunt Robin".

Suggested correction: You can tell that they are really bored and probably didn't listen to Ted when he told them Robin was a news reporter.

Miracles - S3-E20

Other mistake: Right before Barney gets hit by the bus, he's on the sidewalk. To the right there is a One Way sign pointing right, but the bus hits him driving left. The bus would have been driving the wrong way on a one way street.

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: Not only is this not a mistake (it wouldn't be the first vehicle going the wrong way down a one way street), but we even see Barney looking in the direction of where the vehicles should be coming from and assume himself to be safe. Had the bus not been going the wrong way, Barney would have seen it coming and not been hit.

This is irrelevant. The mistake is that the bus is going the wrong way on a one - way street. While people do break the law like this, a bus driver certainly wouldn't.

Something New - S8-E24

Continuity mistake: We find out in this episode that Ted and the mother don't get married for several years, due to postponing The Wedding when she became pregnant. They eventually get married in 2020, when their children are 3 and 5. But in Lobster Crawl (8-9), at the end of the episode Lily and Marshal show up to babysit Ted's daughter when she's younger than that, and Ted is wearing a wedding ring. (00:29:00)

Suggested correction: Many couples wear rings before their actual wedding as a display of commitment. A friend of mine is in this situation. He wears a ring, has a child with his lady, but no actual date for their wedding is set. This is simply Ted choosing to wear a ring before getting married and there is no mistake.

Suggested correction: Lots of blank CDs that you can buy do not have labels on the top and therefore are just shiny on top (like they are on the bottom).

Not true. He points the writing at the camera and puts it writing side down.

The Mermaid Theory - S6-E11

Character mistake: In another episode it is revealed that Robin hates nicknames and reacts badly when she, or anyone else, is given a nickname. However, in this episode her and Marshall give each other nicknames, and she doesn't seem bothered at all.

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: They were trying to convince the others that they were close friends and Marshall probably didn't realise she hated nicknames and Robin was just going along with it.

She says "Teddy boy" often in s2 though.

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: Barney does indeed start going back, but he doesn't make a U-turn. They are on a highway where a U-turn is impossible, and he is pulling to the right to get off at the next exit.

The Best Burger in New York - S4-E2

Trivia: When the gang are in a taxi on their way to one of the burger joints with a green door and a red neon sign, look closely at Cobie Smulders' eyes whilst Barney is talking to Lily about Goliath National Bank - she is almost falling asleep when her character is not meant to be sleepy. Watch as her eyes widen, desperately trying to stay awake.

Something Blue - S2-E22

Trivia: When Ted and Robin are at the restaurant, they are accidentally sent a champagne glass with an engagement ring in. A man then claims the ring and proposes to his girlfriend. This couple really did get engaged on the show - the guy set up the surprise proposal, as his girlfriend thought they were just there as extras.

More trivia for How I Met Your Mother

Answer: After running the marathon for Marshall with no training, he's allowed to ride the subway for free. While sat on the train, the muscles in his legs start to seize up after the marathon to the point it is painful to move his legs. This is why he can't move them. It's the same reason your body aches after a good session at the gym the day before.

Ssiscool

Answer: Barney ran a marathon without any training and over exerted his muscles. While he was able to walk after, later his leg muscles gave out and he couldn't move (or more likely stand). It is not uncommon when one works out too much to be sore the next day, even if they feel okay afterwards. Thus the saying "I'll feel that in the morning."
