2 factual errors in season 2 - chronological order

(6 votes)

PFC Gomer Pyle - S2-E1

Factual error: Sgt. Carter is wearing a plain belt buckle with his dress blues uniform. Since Sgt. Carter is Gunnery Sgt, he is a staff NCO so his buckle should have the USMC emblem on the buckle. (00:24:00)

Sergeant Carter Dates a Pyle - S2-E20

Factual error: U.S. marine utility uniforms have the Marine Corp Emblem and USMC printed in black ink on the left shirt pocket. Private Duke Slater's uniform does not have it printed on his left pocket. His uniform also doesn't have the proper pocket flaps. (00:07:00)

Suggested correction: The EGA's were stenciled iron-on's from a company called Ken Nolan. Their use was optional.

When were they optional? They weren't the first 5 years I was in prior to changing to name tapes in the early 90's.

They were optional when I was in from 1967 to 1970.

Nope. Marine order c-52178 states they must be marked.

Sergeant Carter Dates a Pyle - S2-E20

Other mistake: Private Duke Slater's utility uniform shirt is different from the other Marines. Duke's uniform has square pocket flaps with the button exposed, an exposed button front shirt and the sleeves do not have button cuffs. The other Marines' uniforms have tapered pocket flaps with a hidden button, a hidden button front shirt and the sleeves have button cuffs. (00:05:00 - 00:06:00)

Show generally

Question: Throughout the whole show Gomer Pyle's rank stays as Private First Class. With how long he had been in the Marines, why was he never given a promotion to a higher rank?

Answer: If you saw the whole series run, you know that Gomer was a country bumpkin. He fumbled, stumbled and tumbled his way into one disaster after another. There was an episode that questioned why he was never promoted. However, a few years before Jim Nabors died, the real Marine Corps, gave him a ceremonial promotion to the rank of Lance Corporal, which Jim gladly accepted.

Unfortunately, I never saw all the episodes. Only a few episodes and a clip of the episode where he sings "The Impossible Dream" which made me wonder why he was still a PFC. Thanks so much for the info.
