Continuity mistake: Both the X-ray image and Mulder's statement suggest that the letter opener has penetrated Dr. Sanjay's head at an acute angle. However, during the autopsy, Scully removes the object as if it had been shoved horizontally. The latter position is confirmed by the suicide scene itself at the start of the episode. Answer: As he stated many times throughout the series, Mulder needed Scully to be sober and skeptical. Whenever Scully's skepticism wavered and she started questioning her own rationality, Mulder would try to restore her sense of skepticism, because he needed her to be clear-thinking.
