Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Continuity mistake: When Daisy is showing Luigi the fossils, as the camera cuts from the wide shot to the closeup (when Daisy says "Have a look!"), suddenly their heads go from facing up to facing down between cuts, as do their flashlights.

Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Revealing mistake: When Daisy takes Luigi to the dig site, there's a long wide shot as they talk and start to head down. As the camera zooms in, you can see the composited background (the bridge, city, etc.) "jiggle" slightly towards the end of the shot where the composite effect didn't quite align up.

Continuity mistake: When Iggy and Spike round the corner and snatch Mario's girlfriend, the look on Iggy's face changes as it cuts from a close-up to a wide shot.

Audio problem: When Iggy and Spike start to follow Mario's truck, they accidentally crash their car. As they drive away, you hear Spike say "Out of my way!" but if you look in the windshield, his mouth isn't moving.

Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Continuity mistake: When Mario is watching Luigi trying to talk to Daisy after she gets off the phone, he is tapping the empty water bottle against his head. In the first shot, it's against his forehead, but in the next shot, it's suddenly down by his cheek.

Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Continuity mistake: When Daisy approaches Mario and Luigi after making a call at the phone booth, Mario goes from looking sideways at Luigi to looking down under his car's hood between cuts.

Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Revealing mistake: In the opening, when Daisy's mother pushes the beam and causes the cave-in in the mine, for a split second, you get a pretty clear shot of Koopa's stunt double, who is taller than and looks nothing like Dennis Hopper. He's only on-screen for about a half-second, but it's very easy to notice it.

Visible crew/equipment: When Mario is telling Luigi about getting a call from the café for the plumbing job at the start of the film, watch the cabinet with the glass doors behind Luigi. At one point, you can see the reflection of a crew member in a short-sleeve shirt for a few seconds.

Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Revealing mistake: When the meteorite strikes the Earth at the beginning of the film, there's an odd slip-up in the effect. About a half-second before it hits, you can sort of see it awkwardly shift slightly to the right for a split second. It's hard to catch, but once you see it, it's fairly noticeable.

Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Audio problem: Throughout the scene, where Mario and Luigi are driving to the plumbing job at the beginning of the film, there are multiple moments where their lips and dialogue don't match. It's primarily in the wideshots outside of their van.

Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Continuity mistake: When Koopa is pushed into the chair in the Devo Chamber, suddenly a puddle of goop appears on the floor, and you can see that Koopa is sitting atop an empty uniform that wasn't there before. (There was a short, deleted scene where Koopa used the chamber to reduce a worker to primordial slime, leaving the puddle on the ground and the empty uniform on the chair. However, as the scene was cut, the puddle and uniform appear out of nowhere in the finished film.)

Trivia: Directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel were reportedly widely despised by the cast and crew, who found them arrogant, difficult and unpleasant. Morton reportedly once even poured scalding hot coffee on an extra, burning them, because he wanted their costume to look dirtier. It came to a head one day when co-star Dennis Hopper had enough of their attitude and spent over three hours screaming at Morton and Jankel, berating them over and over and refusing to shoot his scene.

Trivia: Among the actors considered for the role of Mario were Danny DeVito and Tom Hanks. DeVito was reportedly interested but wouldn't commit as no script had been written yet. And Hanks was also interested, but was considered a risk at the time due to several high-profile flops, so he was taken off the project.

Trivia: The film went notoriously over schedule and over budget. For example, Dennis Hopper was only supposed to be on-set for five weeks... but due to production troubles, he ended up being on-set over fourteen weeks.

Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Trivia: Stars Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper were reportedly all furious while making the movie, as the script was constantly being changed (to the point it bore no resemblance to the one they signed up for) and the two directors were reportedly extremely difficult to work with. Hoskins and Leguizamo reportedly combated their fury by often getting very, very drunk during filming.

Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Trivia: Barry Morrow, the writer of "Rain Man," wrote a draft for the film that went unused. It was noted that his draft strayed very far from the source material, and was reportedly a low-key drama about the relationship between the two brothers that was described as being very much like his script for "Rain Man." When producers asked him to write a more adventurous script like the video-games, he refused, and was booted from the project.
