Factual error: During the police pursuit in Pittsburgh, the officers are wearing shoulder speaker/microphone handsets. The models are the Motorola Saber radio, which wasn't introduced until 1989, while the season takes place in 1984.

Factual error: When Leavey begins her training at Parris Island in 2001, she and all the other Marines are wearing MARPAT (Marine Pattern). In reality, MARPAT would have just been designed, and not manufactured until early 2002. The standard camouflage for Marines at the time was M81 Woodland.

Continuity mistake: When George Clooney is pointing his pistol at a guard in the bunker, the hammer is already cocked back (single action), but in the next shot, the hammer is down (double action) and he cocks it again.

Factual error: Garlick's eyeglasses would most likely be out of regulation since they are wire framed. Despite him serving in a non-combat role in Vietnam, he should most likely be wearing Gray Cellulose framed ones (commonly called BCGs or Birth Control Glasses).

Factual error: When Packard and his men arrive on the island, they are seen wearing ALICE gear (All-purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment). The film takes place in 1973, that type of gear would've just finished testing phases in 1973. The soldiers would be more accurately equipped with M-1956 Load-Carrying Equipment (LCE) or M-1967 Modernized Load-Carrying Equipment (MCLE).

Factual error: Before and during the Marines' arrival in Marjah, some of them are wearing Dust Goggles. These would've been first issued in World War II and continued into the early 2000s. The Battle for Marjah took place in 2010, by which point these goggles had been replaced by superior models such as ESS for some time.

Other mistake: When Pike chases after BA by rappelling down (using his suit jacket and hand to do so), he uses the same rope Hannibal used to get into the building. Hannibal is seen with a rope bag and when he escapes into the building several stories below, he is seen unhooking but not throwing the bag out the window. Unless that had happened, Pike wouldn't have been able to use the rope to descend to the sidewalk.

Factual error: When Gates, Barlow, Elgin, and Vig are leaving the village after the milk truck explosion, they give the people MREs. However, the MREs they are passing out are 1996 designed packages. From 1981 until 1995, MREs had a dark brown bag while ones produced from 1996 and current are tan.

Factual error: When Sgt. Harper and his men are prepping their gear for the water mission, he gives Pvt. Ocre one of his rifle plates. But the plate he gives him looks like a steel plate that been wrapped in plastic. In reality, the plates issued to Marines and Soldiers were and still are ceramic Small Arms Protective Inserts (SAPI for short). The plate seen in the film looks nothing like the actual ones.

Visible crew/equipment: When the G.R.S. team drive to Chris Stevens residence, they encounter a road block; one of the cars being a pickup truck with a machine gun (commonly called "Technicals"). In several rear shots from behind it, there is a camera and operator on the edge of the hood. The cameraman is covered by a black sheet to make it difficult to see him.

Continuity mistake: When terrorists start to attack the Ambassador's residence, Chris Stevens is seen putting on a black plate carrier vest. The one he is seen putting on has a cummerbund which lifts up to open. However, in the next several shots and until he isn't seen again, he has a side opening vest, which is actually an IBA (Interceptor Body Armor). This armor opens like a flak jacket by pulling the left flap.

Factual error: Some of the men (including Desmond) are seen using modern, reproduction canteens. They have metal wire chains while World War II ones use stamped ones and a silicon or rubber disk in the cap instead of a cork.

Factual error: Throughout the film, the SEALs are seen wearing Mechanix gloves, but the type seen are the current type. What distinguishes them from older models is the velcro wrist strap. The older models had an elastic, velcro strap, while the newer ones have a reinforced, rubberized velcro strap. The newer type as seen in the film is inaccurate for the time period.

Factual error: The Marines in Afghanistan in 2003 are seen wearing MTVs (Modular Tactical Vest), when in reality they should be wearing IBAs (Interceptor Body Armor). The MTV was adopted by the Marines in 2006 to replace the IBA. Lance Corporal Coughlin (Evan Jonigkeit) is seen wearing an IBA but none of the other Marines are.

Continuity mistake: When the G.R.S. team is on their day off (9/11 anniversary), Tanto is seen video chatting with his wife. In the frontal shot of him, he's using a Samsung smartphone, but in the next shot, it changes to a Blackberry. This is done multiple times throughout the scene.

Factual error: When Upham and Mellish are conversing before the fight at Ramelle, Mellish is seen placing Mk. 2 Pineapple grenades into Upham's helmet. The "spoon" on the grenades does not look to be the correct type. The ones in the film appear to be modern, folded, sheet metal painted dark green; World War II era ones are a simple piece of stamped, sheet steel. The modern ones are angular while World War II ones have a slight curve.

Factual error: Throughout the mini-series, the First Recon Marines use AN/PAQ-4 laser sights, when in reality they used the AN/PEQ-2 laser. Another error is that they are using (according to them) AAA batteries for the sights, while both sights actually run on AA batteries.

Factual error: When Kim Baker arrives in Afghanistan, most of the Marines are seen wearing Desert marpat (Marine Pattern), when in reality, that camouflage was not widely adopted until 2004 to 2005. In 2003, it was in the testing phases, Three Color Desert or DCU (sometimes called "Coffee-stained") would've been the primary camouflage pattern for both Marines and Army soldiers.

Factual error: When Chief Hopper and his fellow patrolman are standing over the lake, Hopper has a radio on his belt. The radio is a modern Motorola walkie talkie and at least a decade newer than it should be.
