Continuity mistake: In the opening scene, the wind has blown a tree down toward the house, which is away from the lake. In a following scene the tree has blown down on the boat house, which is toward the lake. (00:01:20)

Revealing mistake: At the start when the tree falls through the window, it's been pushed through the window horizontally. Since it does no damage around the window as you would certainly expect from a tree falling through an arc. (00:01:20)

Continuity mistake: When Brent thanks David for helping him out by taking him to the store, David is holding his shopping list with both hands. In the next shot David is holding his right hand up by the shelves. (00:08:55)

Mortug

Factual error: There is a scene near the beginning of the movie when the mist has just begun. A firetruck roars by, and has Caddo Parish Fire Dept. on the side. This movie is set in Maine. Louisiana is the only state with parishes. All others, including Maine, have counties. (00:10:50)

Continuity mistake: When the tentacle monster rips out a chunk of Norm's chest, a large spray of blood splashes on his right-side jaw and cheek. In every subsequent shot of him, this blood is gone and his jaws are completely clean. (00:26:30)

Twotall

Continuity mistake: When Norm is dragged out by the monster, there is no blood trail however after they close the door, there is. (00:26:35)

Ssiscool

Continuity mistake: When Private Jessup is thrown out, he walks up to the door and places his bloody hand on the glass door. When the monsters pulls him away, the position of the blood stain on the glass doesn't match where he had his hand in the previous shot. (01:34:55)

Mortug

Continuity mistake: The hand print that is left on the door changes between shots. In one the blood is fairly light and in the next its a lot darker. (01:35:00)

Ssiscool

Factual error: At the very end of the film, when they are driving in the land cruiser, a white Maine state trooper vehicle is upside down. In reality, they are blue. The livery shown is that of the Illinois State Police. (01:47:45)

wizard_of_gore

Continuity mistake: Near the end of the film when the five of them are in the car, they stop to watch a giant monster walk past, shaking the car. When we see the monster again it is walking away from them, but the telephone cables are still erect - it is clear that these would have been knocked down by the monster. (01:48:20 - 01:48:55)

Suggested correction: It actually does knock down some of the poles and cables. It just doesn't knock them all down. The ones you see still standing as it walked away are a fair distance away from where it was walking... hence, they still stand.

Ollie: As a species we're fundamentally insane. Put more than two of us in a room, we pick sides and start dreaming up reasons to kill one another. Why do you think we invented politics and religion?

Trivia: During the scene when the monsters enter the store, watch for when the man on fire stumbles into a book rack. All of the books are Stephen King novels.

More trivia for The Mist

Question: When is the movie supposed to take place? I know the book was set in the 80s, and I thought the film was, as well. Most of the cars seemed to be 80s era vehicles, but the main character uses a cell phone to light his way in one scene and he mentions computer generated artwork. Any thoughts?

Answer: The film is contemporary, as was the original story. Neither was meant to be set in a specific time period other than "now." The reason for the many older vehicles is that the film takes place in a small town. Notice that none of the older vehicles is in new condition. The presence of cell phones and modern products and clothing in the store indicate it is set in the present.
