The Mist

Factual error: There is a scene near the beginning of the movie when the mist has just begun. A firetruck roars by, and has Caddo Parish Fire Dept. on the side. This movie is set in Maine. Louisiana is the only state with parishes. All others, including Maine, have counties. (00:10:50)

Factual error: At the very end of the film, when they are driving in the land cruiser, a white Maine state trooper vehicle is upside down. In reality, they are blue. The livery shown is that of the Illinois State Police. (01:47:45)

Continuity mistake: When Private Jessup is thrown out, he walks up to the door and places his bloody hand on the glass door. When the monsters pulls him away, the position of the blood stain on the glass doesn't match where he had his hand in the previous shot. (01:34:55)

Trivia: At the very beginning, David sits in front of his newest drawing, showing a man with two guns, a rose right of him and a tower far behind on the left side. This drawing shows Roland, a character out of "The Dark Tower", a well-known series of books from Stephen King. This drawing is shown again, some time later after the storm, and David tells that this drawing was meant to become a film poster. (00:00:30)

Question: When is the movie supposed to take place? I know the book was set in the 80s, and I thought the film was, as well. Most of the cars seemed to be 80s era vehicles, but the main character uses a cell phone to light his way in one scene and he mentions computer generated artwork. Any thoughts?

Answer: The film is contemporary, as was the original story. Neither was meant to be set in a specific time period other than "now." The reason for the many older vehicles is that the film takes place in a small town. Notice that none of the older vehicles is in new condition. The presence of cell phones and modern products and clothing in the store indicate it is set in the present.
