Trivia: The film's scratch-and-sniff "Odorama" gimmick (where audiences could "smell the movie") was inspired by the works of director William Castle, who often used audience-participation gimmicks in the films he distributed. Castle was a personal hero of director John Waters.
Trivia: John Waters' first film to receive an R-rating. All of his prior films were either released unrated, or were rated X.
Continuity mistake: About 20 minutes into the movie, the family is sitting around the dining room table eating breakfast. Dad asks how school is going, and the daughter replies, "I learned all about my cervix in sex ed today", then walks off. They are eating breakfast, and the kids have not yet gone to school.
Francine Fishpaw: Oh Elmer, that dog stinks to high heaven. You'll be permeated by his odor.
Elmer Fishpaw: Yeah? Well, this whole world stinks, Francine, so get used to it! You and that big nose of yours are startin' to get on my nerves. Snortin' around the place like a goddamned anteater. I've about had it with you. Gimme that drink! Hurry up.
