Plot hole: Just after Rita rescues Jeff, Diane's grave is seen close to where Jeff was buried alive. Even though Diane's been dead for several years, her make-shift grave site looks like it was freshly dug. There are no fallen leaves or other debris on top, no new vegetation (moss, grass, weeds, etc.) of any type growing on it, nor has the mound of dirt settled, shifted, or been affected by the weather.

Starring: Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland, Sandra Bullock, Nancy Travis
Jeff (Kiefer Sutherland) goes with Barney (Jeff Bridges) to his cabin. Barney persuades Jeff to drink drugged coffee in order to find out what happened to Diane. Jeff passes out and Barney buries him in a wooden box. Rita (Nancy Travis) finds out from Jeff's neighbor, who overheard them arguing, where Jeff and Barney went and Barney's car license plate number. She finds Barney's address by going to the DMV and saying that her car was stolen. Rita goes to Barney's house and talks with his daughter and she tells him how to get to the cabin. Rita reaches Barney's cabin and bluffs that she has kidnapped his daughter. Barney believes her and Rita gets Barney to drink the drugged coffee. He passes out, buying Rita some time to find Jeff. She notices Barney's muddy shoes and a nearby shovel and figures out he buried Jeff. She rescues Jeff but Barney is now awake and attacks her. A revived Jeff kills Barney with the shovel. Jeff now realises that Diane (Sandra Bullock) has been dead all this time. Jeff and Rita stay together and vow never to drink coffee again.

Barney Cousins: You don't care if she's alive or dead anymore.
Jeff Harriman: Yes I do.
Jeff Harriman: No you don't. You're just scared that without the search you won't know who you are. Who is Jeff Harriman, if he's not the guy looking for Diane? Can you really walk away from finally knowing the answer?
Question: Why is there someone (looks like a policeman) lying in the road when Jeff's girlfriend, Diane, vanishes from the service station? (00:22:00 - 00:24:00)

Answer: He is a crew member lying in the road directly behind the brown G.R.S. Dye Works semi-truck (presumably trying to remain hidden from the camera's view), and we even see his right hand waving off the traffic ahead of him (00:22:05).
