Continuity mistake: On the Hogwarts Express, Lupin pulls out his wand to repel the Dementor attacking Harry. In the shot facing Lupin his shirt sleeve is mostly covered by his suit sleeve and he holds the wand a particular way. In the next close-up facing the Dementor, Lupin's arm is visible and a much greater area of his shirt sleeve is now seen and he holds the wand completely differently. (00:22:15)
Continuity mistake: When Dumbledore first introduces Lupin as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, the camera pans to the Gryffindor table. You can see that Ron and Hermione are sitting opposite each other with their dinner sets in front of them. Then Malfoy insults Harry, then when it cuts to Ron saying "Shove off Malfoy" Ron is now sitting opposite the girl who was beside Hermione and not Hermione herself, and the girl couldn't have just moved across because all of her dinner set is in front of her too, perfectly set out. Continuity mistake: When Potter, Weasley and the other kids are making all the animal noises and Potter makes the steam come out of his ears, we see Potter put his arms down. When it cuts from the outside we see Potter has his right arm up. (00:27:15)
Continuity mistake: When Harry stands in front of the Gryffindor dorm and says the password, the door opens inwards. But when the shot changes to inside the dorm, there is no open door visible. (00:27:40)
Continuity mistake: When we get to Trelawney's class when she says "...discover if you possess the sight.", she gets up from her chair. While doing so she place both her arms on the arm rest, but when it cuts her left arm is up. (00:28:10)
Continuity mistake: When Trelawney is looking in Neville's cup, a white cup is in front of a saucer on the table. When it cuts the cup has moved to the other side of the saucer. (00:28:55)
Continuity mistake: When Trelawney is done looking in Neville's cup and puts it down, you see Neville putting his hands on the table. When it cuts his hands aren't on the table. (00:28:55)
Continuity mistake: When Trelawney is walking towards the table that Potter, Ron and Hermione are sitting at, you can see the book on the table is closed. When Trelawney gasps it cuts to Ron and you can see the book is actually open. (00:29:00)
Continuity mistake: When the Whomping Willow kills the blue bird flying towards Hagrid's home, the loose branches from one shot are not visible in the second shot. (00:29:05)
Continuity mistake: When Trelawny says "Look at the cup, tell me what you see" to Ron, the way Ron holds the cup changes between shots. (00:29:10)
Continuity mistake: When Trelawney looks in Potter's cup she is frightened and throws the cup on the table. We can see it landing with its handle inwards on the table. When it cuts the handle points outwards on the table. (00:29:30)
Continuity mistake: In the first Divination scene, Prof. Trewlaney reads Neville's cup then puts it down onto a saucer. However, in the next shot, Neville picks it up from the tabletop. (00:30:00)
Continuity mistake: When Trelawney asks Ron to look in Harry's cup and read the tea leaves, the Grim within the cup is visible. When Harry looks in the cup the Grim is different, for example, it has an open mouth in this shot. (00:30:20)
Continuity mistake: When entering the Hippogriff paddock, there is a shot of Hagrid stepping over the wall with the children behind and the ground is sunlit. Then it cuts to a wider shot and the ground isn't sunlit. (00:30:45)
Revealing mistake: When Neville opens his 'Monster Book of Monsters' he falls to the ground. Then he is lying on the ground and his book is attacking him again. We can see the pieces of pre-cut papers, that should be coming out of the book's mouth, actually come up from the ground, when Neville is holding the book above him. Obviously it's not real. Continuity mistake: During Hagrid's class, Vincent Crabe has his shirt outside his pants. He puts his things on the wall and when Draco and Harry are talking, his shirt is now half tucked into his pants. He didn't have the time to do that. (00:31:20)
Continuity mistake: When Malfoy shouts "Dementor. Dementor." all the kids turn around. Then we see Malfoy and some kids put their hoods on, and at the same time we can see Hermione turn back. When it cuts to Potter turning back we can briefly see Hermione turn back again. (00:31:45)
Revealing mistake: At Hagrid's lesson, just after Malfoy wound Harry up, there is a close up on the class when they first see Buckbeak and you can see Emma Watson holding back a laugh. Surely if her friend was being picked on it wouldn't be funny, plus they're supposed to be scared of Buckbeak. (00:32:05)
Suggested correction: Not true. I saw this scene several times and I never saw Hermione holding back a laugh.
Other mistake: Right before Ron pushes Harry towards Buckbeak, you can see him glance to the right several times, as if waiting for a cue. (00:32:40)
Continuity mistake: Before Hagrid's lesson begins, Malfoy yells, "Dementor! Dementor!" and they all spin around. Ron and Hermione stand beside one another in the first and third shots, yet in the middle shot facing Malfoy, they're a good distance apart. As a matter of fact, in most shots throughout this entire scene many of the students' positions and actions change and/or shift back and forth in consecutive shots, some quite drastically.
