Francisco writer Frances (Diane Lane), is offered a free trip to Tuscany after a painful divorce. Once there, she impulsively buys a villa, and proceeds to fix it up. You expect her to fall in love in the first ten minutes of the film, but nothing works out (married, cheating...).

While she's trying to fix her love life, there are many different situations around her. A young polish construction worker falls in love with Frances' young neighbour, but the girl's parents forbid their relationship. Frances' lesbian friends are having a baby, and on partner walks out on the other, leaving the woman stranded, and pregnant. Helen (the single-mother to-be), then moves in with Frances for a place to stay, at least until the baby is born.

Continuity mistake: Frances finds and takes home a kitten when she first meets Marcello. Months later, when Marcello comes to the house to visit Frances, the kitten has not grown a bit.

Martini: Signora, between Austria and Italy, there is a section of the Alps called the Semmering. It is an impossibly steep, very high part of the mountains. They built a train track over these Alps to connect Vienna and Venice. They built these tracks even before there was a train in existence that could make the trip. They built it because they knew some day, the train would come.

Trivia: While walking in Cortona, Frances passes by a newsstand which displays a poster of the satirical magazine "Il Vernacoliere". The title says "Sarviamo la pace: facciamo i mugoloni a Busce, cosi' si carma i nervi". It's in dialect and it means "Save the peace. Let's give [George] Bush some (fellatio), so he calms down". Question: Is there a reason why we do not ever see the face of Katherine's boy-toy "Zeus"? Is the salary lower for actors whose face is not shown?

Answer: Zeus' face is not shown because the directors want to leave him to our imagination. Without knowing, he can be whomever we want him to be. This increases the credibility of her character as well since she is spontaneous and a free spirit with no "real" attachments. He is just like her - attainable physically, but not emotionally.
