Continuity mistake: Will runs down the stairs towards Jack's jail cell. At the bottom of the steps there is a desk and chair. When he first comes down, the chair is pushed into the corner of the desk. As Will says, "These are half pin barrel hinges," behind him, the chair is now pulled out. Will then uses that chair to balance the bench for "the right leverage to lift the door free." (00:42:25)

Continuity mistake: When Jack and Will commandeer the HMS Dauntless, the HMS Interceptor sails out with all her square sails completely square on (i.e perpendicular to the ships direction of travel) with the wind behind her. We then see the Dauntless sailing out of control in the other direction with her sails in the same position, the winds have switched 180 degrees. (00:47:55)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Continuity mistake: After cutting Elizabeth's hand, Barbossa says, "Waste not," and there's a wide back shot of the two of them, Barbossa is holding the knife in his right hand, and the edge of the blade does not have blood on it. In the very next shot, a close-up of the medallion falling from Elizabeth's hand, the edge of the blade now has blood on it. In a later shot when Barbossa looks at the blade, there is blood on both sides. (01:12:15)

Continuity mistake: In Governor Swann's home, Elizabeth, Pintel and Ragetti are at the bottom of the stairs and in this first shot a third pirate comes in the back doors with a handful of looted riches. They watch as a cannonball crashes through the front window, and in the next shot it slams into him and propels him back out the closed doors. The booty in his hands is different in both shots. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When Barbossa looks through his telescope at Interceptor, before Jack says, "I'm having a thought..." she's a good distance away from the Pearl and all her sails are out. Then in most of the wide and close-up shots of Interceptor, some of the sails differ at the bow and stern. Sails raised in one shot, are lowered in another, then some raised again and also some are raised but blowing wildly, then in the successive shot, it's down and still. Their proximity varies throughout and there are way too many changes between shots. (01:20:45)

Continuity mistake: When Jack walks down the dock to the Interceptor, Murtogg and Mullroy are sitting with sacks, crates and barrels in a deep shadow, but the sun is seen afar. A few shots later, after they intercepted him, those same sacks, crates and barrel are brightly lit by the sun. The shots were probably filmed at different times of the day. (00:11:45)

Continuity mistake: When Elizabeth first meets Will, he is so exhausted that he passes out. Elizabeth then examines the medallion around Will's neck (when she says "You're a pirate." Note that the chain is still around Will's neck in that shot, but in the next immediate shot, when Elizabeth turns to face Norrington, she hides the medallion behind her back. No where does it show that she removed it from Will's neck, and at the angle that she pulled the medallion towards her, it would not have slid off from around Will's neck.

Continuity mistake: Jack says, "That is a wonderful trick. Except, once again..." as he walks down the sloped cart. Behind him to his left are a chair, a barrel and between the two is a miniature ladder and some objects leaning on the wall. When Will cuts the rope of the overhead barrels, Jack (stuntman Tony Angelotti) stands on the cart and the ladder and other objects are not leaning on the wall between the chair and barrel. Continuity mistake: Barbossa chases Jack, who knocks over a small table and he yells, "Sorry." In the next shot, that table is rolling down, with its legs facing towards the wall, with the treasure beside it. Yet in the next shot from below, the table top is close to that wall, not the legs. Also, the arrangement and existence of some of the treasures lying all around differs in the front shot of Jack and the back wide shot. (01:56:55)

Continuity mistake: The very first shot you see of Jack is a view from behind, when he is up in the crow's nest. He has two red pieces of cloth that are fluttering crazily in the wind out to the sides of his head. In the very next shot the pieces of cloth are blowing upwards, not in the same direction as the previous shot. (00:08:40)

Continuity mistake: Jack hides behind a statue outside the blacksmith shop. The soldiers run past a woman and her vegetable cart whose wheels are closest to the blacksmith shop. After Jack removes his sword, he looks around the courtyard. The cart's legs are now closest to the blacksmith shop and the wheels are now at the other end, the complete opposite of how the cart was positioned in the first shot. (00:20:35)

Continuity mistake: At the end of Jack and Will's duel, Jack says, "Move away," and Will replies "No." In this shot, Will's forehead is bare. Then when he says "No," again, there is some hair over his forehead. After Jack says, "This shot is not meant for you," the hair is gone.

In the next wide shot, as Norrington rushes over, her arm is stretched out, up past her head. In this wide shot, the neckline of her slip is different than the two close-ups, before and after. In her next close-up, her hand is back near her head again. (00:16:45)

Continuity mistake: Will goes to the fort and pleads with Norrington to find and save Elizabeth. On the table are two distinct feather quills. They're in different positions in the wide shot and in the close-up when Will slams the axe down on the map. Continuity mistake: In the brig aboard the Pearl, Jack sees Gibbs' flask in the pooled water around him. He reaches for it, holds it upside down to his mouth to drink from. There are two successive shots of him holding it to his mouth and then moving it away. The left sleeve leaning on his knee and the position of the long striped cloth that he wears around his waist differs in both shots. Also, the item on the floor to his left is in a different position in both shots. (01:25:55)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Continuity mistake: In the beginning, after the young Will is pulled on board, when Will says his name, the medallion is protruding out of his shirt. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Continuity mistake: At the opening of the scene in the cave of treasures, Jack lifts up a well endowed golden statue, looks at it awhile and tosses it back into the pile, as he clues Will with talk of honesty and dishonesty. Later in the scene, Jack and Barbossa are fighting in front of that same pile and the golden statue that Jack had thrown earlier is now sitting upright behind the chandelier. (01:51:40 - 01:52:40)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When Elizabeth is hiding from the pirates in the closet, and the pirates first enter the room, you can see that the carpet is folded back (from her opening the door) quite a bit. When the pirates see the carpet pushed back and know where Elizabeth is hiding, just a small corner of the carpet is pushed back. (00:33:35)

Continuity mistake: When Jack holds the chain to Elizabeth's neck, and subsequently swings about, there are about ten links between the wrist shackles. When he tosses the links over the rope, before he slides down, there are at least fifteen attached links. Then at the blacksmith shop, when Jack sits at the anvil, there are eight links, and after he breaks it there are three links dangling from the right shackle and seven dangling from the left, totaling ten. Question: Why did Jack cut himself before throwing the coin to Will? I thought the curse only needed Will's blood?

Answer: The curse needs the blood of everybody who took a coin from the chest. All the other pirates have already contributed so, as the movie opens, the only blood needed is Will's, substituting for his father. During the finale of the movie, Jack takes a coin from the chest, adding himself to the curse, so his blood is now required as well as Will's.

Tailkinker

But I didn't see any blood on the coins, and none of the pirates cut themselves, even before Will became part of the mix.

Yes, the other pirates did cut themselves before Will came into it, off-screen. The lack of blood on the coins can simply be explained as most of it dripping to the bottom of the chest, it being washed away by storms blown into the cave, or by the fact that they didn't drop that much blood on it in the first place.

When they had Elizabeth they believed she was Bill Turner's daughter, but they all thought the curse had failed, none of them had cut themselves so it makes zero sense.

They had been collecting back the coins for years. During that time they repaid their own blood. All they needed was the last coin and the blood of Bill Turner to break the spell.
