Trivia: When Doctor Stone meets with Bridget Fonda and Woody Harrelson at the bar in Beverly Hills, Bridget says "Is that a movie star?" and Woody says, "Nah, that's just Ted Danson" (a dig at Woody's then costar on 'Cheers').
Trivia: It was while working on this movie that Michael J. Fox noticed the shaking of his hands which were the symptoms of Parkinson, the disease which prevents him from taking an active role ever since. His flexing his hands on the steering wheel at the beginning of the movie is him trying to keep his hands still.
Answer: That's just the long-standing relationship they had with Doc Hogue and assumed it would continue with Dr. Stone. Hogue was more than a doctor to the town folk. He was a strong father-figure that everyone felt they could go to for a variety of reasons. Also, this is a comedy film, so the characters and their situations are deliberately cliched and quirky.
