Continuity mistake: In the scene where the Wicked Witch in Munchkinland goes over to observe the ruby slippers on her dead sister's feet, when she is up close there's not much space between her and the slippers but when she turns around and says "they're gone," she's further away, then she's closer again in the next shot.

Continuity mistake: When Dorothy is at the end of the movie confronting the Wizard about going home, after Toto opens the curtain Dorothy goes over there and automatically has him in her arms - she didn't bend down and pick Toto up. (01:28:55)

Continuity mistake: The rope around the Scarecrow's neck is tied differently throughout the scene after he meets Dorothy. The rag around his hat is rearranged also. (00:34:50 - 00:36:20)

Continuity mistake: When the Tin Man, Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion and Dorothy are cornered in the witch's castle, the scarecrow grabs the Tin Man's axe and chops a rope, releasing the chandelier, which falls on the guards. In the next shot, however, as the witch is shrieking "seize them", the guards give chase with only 1 or 2 laying on the floor. (01:24:55)

Continuity mistake: After the Witch throws a fireball at the Scarecrow in the woods and disappears, Dorothy is holding Toto. But when it cuts to a closeup of her, it looks like her shoulders are extended. When it cuts back to the wide shot, she indeed has her arms around the Scarecrow and Tin Man, even though she never put Toto down. (00:46:55)

Suggested correction: The "several seconds later" between his axe being taken and him having it back is a 25-second scene of the Scarecrow being pulled apart, and Dorothy and Toto being taken away. There was plenty of time for the Tin Man to retrieve his axe. Also, when we see the Tin Man with his axe again, there are still many flying monkeys on the ground, so it's possible that the flying monkey who took his axe didn't just immediately fly away with it.

Continuity mistake: When the Lion is singing about being King of the Forest, the Tin Man breaks a flower pot to "crown" him. Pay close attention, as the break marks on the pot change. In one shot there's a big jagged edge sticking up (obviously longer than the others) and in the next shot most of the edges are even.

Revealing mistake: During some scenes, straw-stuffed Scarecrow's pant legs and his boots would sometimes have a gap that reveals the skin of Ray Bolger's leg. Two examples are, at Emerald City when Scarecrow places Lion's "cape" on him, and also when Dorothy and her friends are told the Wizard says to go away. (01:05:50 - 01:07:25)

More trivia for The Wizard of Oz

Question: Did Dorothy really go to Oz or was it a dream? Because, in return to Oz at the end, she sees Ozma (the good witch in her mirror) or was that just her imagination/a dream too?

Answer: In the film it's left ambiguous. At the end it's strongly implied that she was dreaming. The characters she meets all look like people she actually knows. In the original book, she actually went to Oz.

Answer: Return to Oz was not a direct sequel to the 1939 film. One was developed by Disney and the other by MGM. Return to Oz is actually an adaptation-fusion of the second and third Oz books, that contains elements from the 1939 film (like the Ruby slippers and the Oz/Kansas counterparts) because that's what people are most familiar.
