Continuity mistake: Robert Redford is behind the train motorman. He is holding on to the top of the cart, but for the first close-up showing his face in the movie, evidently they didn't want his jacket to bundle up as his arms were lifted: he is in a completely different position. But he's again clinging to the top of the cart in the following shot. (00:06:10)
Continuity mistake: Robert Redford has no cigarette before jumping off the train passing by Dodson, suddenly has a lit cigarette in mouth, then not, then one in hand that he tosses away. What he does not toss is his suitcase before getting off the train. But his luggage is there for him anyway right after. (00:06:20)
Continuity mistake: Before entering the boarding house the first night, Willie says "Hey wait a minute", putting her hands on her hips. In the next shot, she has her arms down her sides and does the same gesture only later. (00:09:45)
Continuity mistake: Willie was setting Owen up in Papa's room but storms outside to halt the drunk guys. She says "Get out of here Linsday Tate" with her hair in front of both shoulders, but in the previous shot she was standing with her hair behind her right shoulder. (00:12:05)
Continuity mistake: When Alva gets in the kitchen during the birthday party, Owen has not yet touched the chicken, but he's conveniently got a big mouthful of a drumstick in the next close-up, for comedy effect. (00:16:50)
Continuity mistake: After Sidney leaves with the beer for the tub, Willie asks Owen what is he there for, and Alva scolds her. Redford is holding the chicken with both hands, becoming just one in the wider shot with Alva standing. (00:18:15)
Continuity mistake: Alva tells Willie the story of the Peabody Hotel in Memphis cupping her face. The handkerchief sticks out quite a bit in the wider shot but is neatly contained in her hand in the close-up. (00:20:05)
Continuity mistake: Peeved by Owen's trick about the gator and ducks pond, Alva gets outside the kitchen, where instantly she stumbles into Sidney. She is holding her right hand in front of her mouth, which becomes a left hand to her chest with the closer angle. (00:20:55)
Continuity mistake: Alva stands up from the swinging bench after the Hummingbird Express has passed. Sidney, by her, has his left hand firmly on the armrest, but the same arm is across his lap in the next shot as if he tried to reach for her. (00:22:30)
Continuity mistake: Sidney kisses Alva as she tells him the dream of going to New Orleans. She has her handkerchief in her right hand, suddenly clutching it to her chest with the left. And she is holding it against his arm with the right as the angle changes again. (00:23:20)
Continuity mistake: Alva 'mistakenly' enters Owen's room. In the side views showing both characters, Robert Redford's hand is on his belly, while shot from the other side his hand rests on the mattress. (00:25:10)
Continuity mistake: In Papa's room, Alva goes to the window to pull the curtains. Robert Redford is lying on the bed with the right arm across and over his head. There's a close-up in between two shots with him in that position, with an intermediate one when he says "Thank you" with his arm down. (00:26:20)
Continuity mistake: When Legate parries the slap by Alva, his wristwatch says it's about half past midnight. But it was half past already in the kitchen scene, 10 minutes earlier in the movie - so even longer in real time. (00:28:10)
Continuity mistake: During the whole conversation with her mom at her bedside, Alva's head in the close-ups is resting in a different spot than the wider shots - just look at the colored cloth under her head. (00:29:30)
Continuity mistake: Owen is getting cigarettes and ice cream while Willie outside gets approached by the punks in Lindsay's car. During the sequence, Willie's hair is in front or behind her right shoulder, with no real continuity. (00:34:15)
Continuity mistake: Legate smears the face of Lindsay Tate with the ice cream in a close-up. In the wider shot, the pink goo has gathered mostly to the point of the chin, unlike the previous shot. (00:35:00)
Continuity mistake: Before Owen leaves her to go work, Willie licks the cone in the close-up, and it's messy and dripping. Cut, and not only she is not licking it, but it's also nicely in shape and not dripping down the pastry. (00:36:05)
Continuity mistake: Legate comes back from work the first day, and Willie closes the door leaving him and Alva in the room. Natalie Wood's shadow jumps from the left to the right of the lock quite noticeably in different shots. (00:42:35)
Continuity mistake: Skinny-dipping in the pond, Charles Bronson kisses Natalie Wood holding her face between both hands, which turns to one hand in the following shot. (00:53:55)
Continuity mistake: Alva just learned about Legate's true profession and is standing now in his room shouting at him. In the closer shot, her necklace is running on the rightmost part of her right breast, while it is more centered in the wider shots. (00:55:10)
