Continuity mistake: The morning after Vivian's first night at the hotel, room service brings breakfast. When she's eating a croissant it cuts to a shot of Edward, and when it cuts back to Vivian she's eating a pancake which goes from being half done, to being a whole pancake again. (00:30:55)
Pretty Woman (1990)
Ending / spoiler
Directed by: Garry Marshall
Starring: Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, Jason Alexander, Hector Elizondo, Ralph Bellamy, Laura San Giacomo, Amy Yasbeck
Richard Gere (Edward) decides to become partners with the old guy instead of destroying his company. Edward offers Vivian a place to live in New York but she refuses, saying she doesn't want him when he has time, she wants "the fairy-tale". She moves back in with Kit and plans to moves to San Francisco to finish school. Edward comes to her apartment, climbs the fire escape and "rescues" her and they get together.
Riley Finn
Edward: What makes you think I am a lawyer?
Vivian: You have that sharp, useless look about you.
Trivia: The scene where Edward offers Viv the necklace and shuts the box on her fingers wasn't scripted - Richard Gere did it as a joke. You can tell because when he does it, Julia Roberts laughs and looks up and around (ie. at the film crew) - in the context of the scene there wasn't anyone there for her to look at. (01:21:45)
Question: Why exactly did Edward need a date so badly for the week? He made a big deal about it to his ex-girlfriend earlier in the movie about her going with him to something. Did he just not want to go alone or was there something that I missed?

Answer: Edward always needed to project a certain image of success, including having a beautiful woman by his side. His previous girlfriend dumped him because she was fed up with him treating her as nothing more than someone to cater to his needs and to be a prop to aid his business deals. He hires Vivian for the same reason and to charm the men he wants to conduct business with. Presumably, he would find a new girlfriend later on, but needed someone in the immediate interim to fill that role.
