Other mistake: Sgt. Carter is a Gunnery Sgt. yet the show just calls him sgt. The proper address would be "Gunnery Sgt." or "Gunny".
Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. (1964)
1 other mistake in show generally - chronological order
Starring: Jim Nabors, Frank Sutton, Ronnie Schell
Sergeant Carter Dates a Pyle - S2-E20
Other mistake: Private Duke Slater's utility uniform shirt is different from the other Marines. Duke's uniform has square pocket flaps with the button exposed, an exposed button front shirt and the sleeves do not have button cuffs. The other Marines' uniforms have tapered pocket flaps with a hidden button, a hidden button front shirt and the sleeves have button cuffs. (00:05:00 - 00:06:00)
Sgt. Carter: Pyle. My old grandmother could do better than that.
Gomer Pyle: Well, bless her heart.
Trivia: The name of Gomer Pyle comes from writer Gomer Cool and actor Denver Pyle.
Opie Joins the Marines - S2-E26
Question: How can Andy meet Sergeant Carter here if they met in the pilot episode of Gomer Pyle, USMC?
Answer: There's no indication they were meeting for the first time, in fact they seem to know each other as Sgt. Carter addresses Andy only as "Sheriff". Gomer Pyle just says his two favorite people are "meeting face to face", and obviously in the pilot episode Sgt. Carter wasn't one of Pyle's favorite people yet.

Suggested correction: In the Marine Corps, a Gunnery Sgt. may be referred to as Sgt, Gunnery Sgt, or Gunny. All Sgt's. are just that, Sgt's. Thus, a Staff Sgt, Gunnery Sgt, Master Sgt, Sgt. Major etc, may all be called Sgt's. Though Master Sgt's and Sgt. Majors are often referred to as "Top" and Sgt. Major.
Well, while it is technically correct that an E-5 - E-9 are all types of sergeant, and MIGHT be referred to as Sergeant, it would be really disrespectful to call a GySgt "Sergeant" all the time.
