Monk

Mr. Monk Goes Back to School - S2-E1

Continuity mistake: When Monk is leaving Derek Philby's classroom, he is quite content to just pick up a piece of chalk (with his bare hands) to write on the blackboard, but earlier, he makes sure to use a chalk holder to do this and nearly has a panic attack when he gets chalk dust on himself.

Mr. Monk Goes Back to School - S2-E1

Continuity mistake: At the school tower murder scene, Randy's coat is buttoned up over his tie, but changes suddenly when Stottlemeyer says, "OK, bring him up." The coat is immediately unbuttoned and open all the way in the very next shot.

Suggested correction: After he wrote his name, he says "what's up with that k?" and erases it. He started to re-write the k when he got hit by the eraser, leaving it unfinished.

Mr. Monk and the Very, Very Old Man - S2-E5

Continuity mistake: When his wife visits Stottlemeyer in his office he fills the running waterfall with coffee, but later in that scene when he holds her hand to promise her that he will investigate the the old man's death the waterfall is empty again. (00:04:40 - 00:07:10)

Mr. Monk and the Very, Very Old Man - S2-E5

Continuity mistake: In the cemetery scene, Stottlemeyer approaches the grave of the 17 year old open case hit and run victim. The dates on his grave are 1980-1997. But in Dennis Gammill's confession letter in the end, it says he killed the boy in December 1998.

Suggested correction: It's never wall-to-wall carpeting. It's always a rug, and the Captain even calls it a rug. In the shot of the vacuum and the Captain's feet, you can see the hardwood floor behind him.

Bishop73

Earlier there was no rug at all. They were fighting about the coffee table and you could hear the scrapping noise of the coffee table on the bare floor.

Mr. Monk and the Sleeping Suspect - S2-E7

Continuity mistake: When Monk spills the potted plant and grabs a vacuum cleaner from the hall, he's holding the handle with several large paper towels. When he plugs the vacuum in, he now has a wipe in his hand instead. When he's finished plugging in and turns around, the wipe has vanished and there's nothing in his hands or on the vacuum. But when we cut to a wider shot as he turns the vacuum on, the paper towels reappear on the handle.

Mr. Monk and the Sleeping Suspect - S2-E7

Continuity mistake: Monk throws the bomb into the toilet and shuts the door, pulling it towards him. When we see him hit by the blast there's no door in the way, and in the reverse shot looking into the bathroom the door has swung open into the room again, despite the blast radiating outwards. Plus it should have destroyed the door anyway.

Mr. Monk and the Paperboy - S2-E10

Continuity mistake: Stottlemeyer says "does that make any sense to you?" as Monk is straightening the pots on the mantelpiece - all the lid handles are horizontal. The camera cuts away for a second, cuts back, and the lid on the far right has suddenly rotated 90°, whereupon Monk straightens it to be horizontal like the others.

Mr. Monk and the Three Pies - S2-E11

Continuity mistake: When Van Rankin takes the borrowed flour from his kitchen counter and hands it to Sharona, it's in a standard paper flour sack, and the counter is clean. Later, there's flour dust on the counter and the impression of a large, round flour tin - like the one in Monk's kitchen - instead of an imprint of the paper sack. (00:37:20)

Mr. Monk and the T.V. Star - S2-E12

Continuity mistake: The blood stains on Brad Terry's sweatshirt change positions after he runs back into the house. A few shots later, they're suddenly so faint they're barely visible at all anymore. Blood stains don't fade, at least not in just a few minutes.

Mr. Monk and the Captain's Wife - S2-E14

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Sharona returns the dog, she opens the gate, turns around and closes & latches the gate. They even make a point of showing the latched gate before she is on the porch. As she is talking to the owner, you see the gate behind her open and then closed between shots. She had latched it, so all scenes should have shown it latched.

Mr. Monk Goes to Jail - S2-E16

Factual error: Death row prisoners cannot donate organs. No doctor participates in an execution and after the lethal injection the medical examiner must wait at least fifteen minutes to test for cardiac activity before pronouncing the prisoner dead. This is enough time for hypoxia to render the heart, lungs and kidneys useless for transplant. Apart from this, organs intended for transplant must be removed within minutes of the death of the donor. Prisoners are not executed in operating theatres.

Mr. Monk Goes to Mexico - S2-E2

Trivia: According to co-producer Tom Scharpling, the Mexican homicide cops are purposely written as parodies of Stottlemeyer and Disher, right down to their attitudes, their ranks, their suits, and Captain Alameda's mustache. Even the bumbling lieutenant's name is a little joke on Disher. Plato means "dish" in Spanish.

Show generally

Question: If Monk is afraid of germs, then why does he keep touching things that could possibly have germs on them like parking meters or books?

Answer: Notice also that in the opening credits scene when he is touching parking meters her also wipes his hand on his clothes each time he does it.

Answer: That's the thing about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It's not something rational. He just has to touch things like that. It's not something he can rationally think through. However, since part of his disorder includes an obsession with cleanliness, he also has an assistant walk around handing him wipes periodically. It's like when he gets a cold and uses both a humidifier (because that's what you use when you're congested) and a dehumidifier (to counteract the effects of the humidifier). He may spout rationalizations after he does something, but his compulsions exist outside of any rational thought whatever.
