Furthermore, the Pokemon toys are recent releases as well, showing the modern design of Pikachu. Further to this, while the first Pokémon games were released in 1996, and even if such Pikachu plushies were available to import at this point, the franchise and the resulting 'Pokémania' did not officially reach the US until 1998, making them unlikely to appear in Deidre's collection.
