Matlock

The Broker - S5-E11

Question: Avery says that what he wants to talk to Julie about has nothing to do with his case. He tells her the reason why he lied about being home all night. By telling Julie the real reason he lied, isn't Avery actually discussing the case with her?

The Temptation - S8-E14

Question: A couple of scenes show Leanne at the beach. At the end, Ben in his usual suit, is walking on the beach, saying, "I thought I might find you here." If Ben has a practice in Atlanta, lives in an Atlanta suburb, isn't the beach a bit of a drive - about 2-3 hours from Atlanta? Of course, it's not impossible. I just don't see Ben or his daughter taking a quick jaunt to the beach.

Answer: Leanne often went to the beach whenever she was upset about something. In this episode, Leanne realised that Kevin, the guy she had been seeing, had broken into her home and taken her diary in hopes of learning everything about her. This upset her because her privacy had been invaded and Kevin thought that the entries in her diary described the kind of man she was looking for. Ben drove down to the beach to comfort Leanne.

Only problem with that is that earlier in the episode LeeAnn went for a jog on the beach. She drives three hours to jog?

She didn't go for a jog. She went there because she was upset.

Answer: If it was ever found out that she was at Terry's house before he was killed, there's a possibility that a lot of people would have begun to suspect her of murdering Terry. By claiming that she wasn't, she was hoping that people wouldn't accuse her of the murder.

The Victim - S4-E17

Question: During the trial, Matlock says that he paid a man to follow Bret which is how they were able to find the rope that Bret used. Would what Ben did to prove that Bret was the killer actually be allowed?

Answer: I did not see this episode, but YES. Both prosecution and defense lawyers use investigators to search for and uncover evidence that is legally admissible.

The Juror - S7-E7

Question: Why was Ben on a jury? Wouldn't being a lawyer make him exempt from jury duty?

Answer: No, being a lawyer doesn't exempt one from serving jury duty. Although during jury selection one of the trying lawyers may want to have the lawyer stricken from the jury.

The Fisherman - S2-E22

Continuity mistake: Matlock is inside a jail cell, speaking to a man who has been accused of murder. In an outdoor scene, someone throws a raw egg at the window as Matlock looks out. Inside the cell, as Matlock turns away from the window, the splattered egg has vanished.
