Ned Pepper: What's your intention? Do you think one on four is a dogpaw?
Rooster Cogburn: I mean to kill you in one minute, Ned. Or see you hanged in Fort Smith at Judge Parker's convenience. Which'll it be?
Ned Pepper: I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!
Rooster Cogburn: Fill your hand, you son of a bitch!
Lawyer Goudy: I believe you testified that you backed away from old man Wharton?
Rooster Cogburn: Yes, sir.
Goudy: Which direction were you going?
Rooster Cogburn: Backward. I always go backward when I'm backin' away.
Lawyer Goudy: Was your revolver loaded and cocked?
Rooster Cogburn: Well, a gun that's unloaded and cocked ain't good for nothin'.
Emmett Quincy: I don't remember any Ned Pepper.
Rooster Cogburn: Short feisty fella, nervous and quick, got a messed-up lower lip.
Emmett Quincy: That don't bring nobody to mind. A funny lip?
Rooster Cogburn: Wasn't always like that, I shot him in it.
Emmett Quincy: In the lower lip? What was you aiming at?
Rooster Cogburn: His upper lip.
Rooster Cogburn: Well Mr. Rat, I have a writ here says you're to stop eating Chin Lee's cornmeal forthwith. Now it's a rat writ, writ for a rat, and this is lawful service of the same. See... Doesn't pay any attention to me.
[Rooster shoots the rat.]
Chen Lee: [Runs into the room.] Outside is place for shooting!
Rooster Cogburn: I'm servin' some papers!
[Watching Mattie ford the river hanging on the back of her horse.]
Rooster Cogburn: By God. She reminds me of me.
Station-keeper: See'd your dust all day. What you drivin'? Buffalo?
Col. John Henry Thomas: Stage arrived yet?
Station-keeper: It's overdue. I ain't askin' cause I don't care, but if your name's Thomas there's a couple of poppinjays waitin' inside ta see ya. They been here for two days now. I give 'em water the first day and they've took'n root.
Col. John Henry Thomas: Government agents?
Station-keeper: I ain't asked. They ain't said.
Shortgrub: Where to, John Henry?
Col. John Henry Thomas: Shortgrub, I've been tryin' for three years to get you to call me Colonel. Now it's too late.
Shortgrub: Where to, John Henry?
Shortgrub: You ain't expecting trouble, are you John Henry?
Col. John Henry Thomas: Trouble? Well, let's see... We got Maximilian on one hand and Juarez on the other, and bandits in between. And on top of that, we're Americans in Mexico taking a cavvy of horses to a very unpopular government. Why should we expect trouble?
Lomax: You got a bargain, Big Man.
Taw Jackson: How's that?
Lomax: Two five-hundred dollar days for the price of one.
Taw Jackson: In four days, Pierce is going to make the biggest gold shipment ever made out of the territory - a half a million dollars.
Lomax: How are we goin' to take it? With the Prussian army?
Taw Jackson: With three other fellas. Five of us.
Lomax: Five. I'm kind of glad I didn't kill you tonight - you're funny as hell.
Lomax: Don't let anything happen to ya.
Taw Jackson: Not likely.
Taw Jackson: The plans have changed. The Kid wants to use nitro.
Lomax: Nitroglycerine?
Taw Jackson: Which is in a safe that you'll have to open.
Lomax: Forget it! I'm not gonna be anywhere near that drunk kid and nitro.
Taw Jackson: Lomax, that cuts it! Nobody takes a half a million sittin' on their backside. You'll either quit acting like a prima donna or we'll call the whole thing off.
Lomax: All right, but it'll cost you two thousand dollars more of your share.
Wes Fletcher: Let me show you somethin'. You ever seen a shell like this before?
Taw Jackson: Yeah.
Wes Fletcher: Well, I took in ten thousand rounds to Pierce last week.
Taw Jackson: Hmm. Gatling gun.
